; Futhey & Cope (p. 600): "Joseph Parke remained at the homestead, and lived almost a century. He was twice married, and by his first wife had one son, Abiah, who took sides with the British during the Revolutionary war, and for one of his exploits piloted a party of the enemy by night to capture his uncle, Col. Hannum, then keeping the " Centre House," in Marshallton. The final turn of events making it unsafe for him to remain in the neighborhood, he " left the parts" and went to Canada, but was never heard of after alive. Several years ago Edward Townsend, son of John Townsend, of West Chester, being in the West, fell in company with a half-breed Indian named Joseph Parke, as he was descending the Missouri in a steamboat. From their mutual inquiries, with subsequent developments, it appeared that Abiah Parke had married a woman of the Shawnee tribe of Indians, then near Maiden, in Canada, and had left two sons, Joseph and William. The tribe had removed to the waters of the Maumee, in Ohio, and from, thence to Kansas. Joseph Parke, being a person of energy and ability, became the chief of the tribe, but lived in a style of civilization. In 1852 he visited Chester County and made some effort to obtain a share of his grandfather's estate, but did not succeed. His death occurred about 1857, and that of his brother William three years previously." He was was mentioned in a land transaction by Jonathan Parke on 11 November 1747 at East Caln Township, Chester Co., Pennsylvania, USA, Pennypacker [1909:161-2]: "...John Jackson and wife, in connection with John Taylor and wife, on November 11th, 1747, by indenture of lease and release, conveyed two hundred and seventy-three (273) acres of this land to Jonathan Parke. Jonathan Parke died intestate, leaving to survive him a widow, three sons and three daughters. On the 27th of March 1769, Joseph Parke and Samuel Coope : "...John Jackson and wife, in connection with John Taylor and wife, on November 11th, 1747, by indenture of lease and release, conveyed two hundred and seventy-three (273) acres of this land to Jonathan Parke. Jonathan Parke died intestate, leaving to sur: "...John Jackson and wife, in connection with John Taylor and wife, on November 11th, 1747, by indenture of lease and release, conveyed two hundred and seventy-three (273) acres of this land to Jonathan Parke. "Proceedins for the settlement of Jonathan Parke's estate were had in the Orphan's Court of chester County in the year 1769. Abiah Parke, one of the sons of Janathan Parke deceased, was not satisfied with the decisions and actions of the Orphans' court of Cheter County, and he appealed to the Supreme Court, but like many others who delight "in the joy of battle," his appeal met with little success.
"In 1782 John Hannum, the hero of the Revolutonary battlefield, and the man of business affairs throughout the Bradfords, the Calns, and the Goshens, was appointed guardian of Elizabeth Parke, and in connection with the other Parke heirs, asked the court for a writ of inquisition for the purpose of settling the estate. Other proceedins were had and the business was concluded.
"Abiah Parke's will, dated March 31, 1800, gave and decised to his son, Thomas A. Parke, some of the land on which the present "Swan Hotel" stands, thus described: "'Beginning at a corner of John Edge's land by the turpike road, then by said land southeasterly and notheasterly to line of wm.
