The line tracing a William Clayton back to Charlemagne was first published in: The Clayton family by Henry F. Hepburn. Wilmington : The Historical Society of Delaware, 1904 (Wilmington, Del.: The J.M. Rogers Press). I have also seen this attributed to a Major Frank Beals but I do not have the full title of his work. However, it doesn't really matter since the William Clayton that Hepburn traced back is =not= our William Clayton! Unfortunately, back in the 1970s , the late Jim Bellarts who was publishing the "Quaker Yeoman" got hold of this and he also published it as our William's ancestry and since then it's been hard to keep it from spreading around as the gospel truth!

I fell for it too and for many years had my database cluttered with a long line of "de Claytons" etc. I even paid $50 for Bellarts' book thinking he was somewhat of an authority on the Claytons. Far from it!

Louis E. Jones, in 1982, went to England and uncovered the will of a William Clayton dated ca.1658 in Chichester [England] Miscellaneous Wills 1653-1658, Vol. 21B, p. 59, Consistory Court Will Register in the West Sussex Record Office, Chichester. I have a copy of this will which is extremely difficult to decipher, but I am able to determine that this William identifies himself as a timberman residing in the Parish of Pancras without the East Gate of Chichester, Sussex. It lists his sons William, Richard (not yet 21 years of age), Thomas (not yet 21 years of age); daughter Elizabeth and youngest daughter Mary; and *grandchildren William and Prudence Clayton, children of his son William.* (See above link to full transcript of this will deciphered by Marilyn Winton.)

This William married 30 Oct 1631 Boxgrove Parish to Joan SMITH who was buried 27 Apr 1644. Their children baptized at Boxgrove, Sussex were: William 9 Dec 1632 (our William); Elizabeth 11 Feb 1637; Richard 13 Sep 1640; and Thomas 26 Feb 1642. Daughter Mary is from a second marriage after 1644 to Elizabeth SIMMONS whose death was recorded 6 Oct 1660 in the Lewes & Chichester Monthly Meeting records.

William Clayton (our William), son of William & Joan Smith, married 7 Nov 1653 St. Pancras Parish, Chichester to Prudence Lanckford of St. Peters the Less, daughter of William Lanckford of Broughton Parish, Hampshire. This marriage was copied again by Louis E. Jones in 1982 from the St. Pancras Parish, Chichester, Sussex Parish Register Calendar by V. London, 1945.

This new information was published, oddly enough, by Bellarts in the Quaker Yeoman in Jan. 1985. Long after I decided not to subscribe to it any longer. I do have a photocopy of that issue and I'd have to say that Bellarts much to my dismay continued to hang on to the hope that at least some of the material he previously published might be true!

Apparently there is a will for a Thomas Clayton dated 10 Sep 1630 and proved 28 Apr 1631 (Consistory Court of Chichester) which names a wife Margaret, sons Walter, William, Mathew, Richard and Thomas, daughters Mary wife of Richard Martin and Elizabeth. Bellarts felt this might be the grandfather of our William which is definitely a possibility but I haven't added him to my tree yet without seeing some supportive evidence. Bellarts took it one more step and speculated that this Thomas was POSSIBLY the son of a John b. ca. 1530 who was the son of a Thomas born ca 1500 who made his will in Rudgwick parish 4 Jul 1557.

Personally, I think we are on pretty thin ice when birthdates start appearing as "about" at 30 year intervals! The English clergy kept very thorough records and there should be more definitive dates in the early parish registers so one shouldn't have to resort to "ca." dates.

Bellarts does say that the will of William circa 1658 proves conclusively that William of Chichester was not the "son of a London lawyer" but never admits that he led us up the wrong tree! AND he goes right on to say that Thomas Clayton MAY have been the grandson of Thomas De Clayton b. ca. 1440, eldest son of John de Clayton & Mary Mainwaring who was disinherited by his parents and it is likely having been disinherited Thomas would have left Lancashire perhaps settling in London or Sussex, a days journey south of London at that time...and he goes on! Nice effort on his part to salvage some useless data but I personally think he was incorporating more wishful thinking than hard evidence.

     Dr. James M. Downing died at his home in Denver, Col., on Sunday, July 17th, after several weeks illness.
     Dr. Downing belonged to one of the oldest and most highly respected families in Chester County. In his early youth he went west and practiced dentistry, in which profession he was very successful. In later years and at the time of his death, he was engaged in the real estate and loan business.
     Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Warwick, a prominent lawyer in the city of Denver; Harold, at school. The following brothers and sisters survive him: Thomas W. Downing, Cashier of the Downingtown National Bank; Mrs. Louise Miller, Miss Helen Downing and Mrs. Dr. Wm. Matlack, of Downingtown; Dr. T.L. Downing, of Chicago, Ill., and a sister in Virginia.

     On Sunday, July 12th, James Mount Downing died in Denver, Colorado. He was born in Caln, Chester County, and was the second son of the late Miller and Sarah G. Downing and a brother of Thos. W. Downing and sisters, of Downingtown. He was well-known here, part of his early life was spent in Coatesville, being educated at J. K. Taylor's Academy of that place. Mr. Downing went West in 1868, at the age of nineteen years. His wife, and two sons survive him, Warwick Miller and Harold, the former a leading lawyer in Denver, who spent a part of his early youth in Downingtown, a student at the Chester Valley Academy, and afterwards at Mount Holly, N.J. under Prof. H.M. Waldradt and was graduated in the law department of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. James M. Downing organized and was president of the Downing Investment Company of Denver, dealing in real estate and mining securities and was successful in his business enterprise.

     This might be the Thomas William DOWNING (1851-1940) who is mentioned as a son of Miller DOWNING (1805-1878) and Sarah Guinn MOUNT DOWNING (1815-1891) in the 1860 Federal Census of Valley Township, Chester Co. in his parents' household, and in the 1880 Federal Census of Downingtown as a bank clerk.      A biographical sketch was found in the Chester county Historical Society archives. It states: "Thomas W. Downing -- A descendant of the founder of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, Thomas W. Downing was born in Chester county, PA, February 9, 1851. He is a lineal descendant of Thomas Downing, immigrant ancestor of this important Pennsylvania branch of the Downings, who came to America from England in 1720, and bought a large tracet of land, on which the little village of Milltown was built. The name was changed to Downingtown at an early period of hits grotwth. Mr. Downing was educated in Downingtown and Coatesville public schools. After leaving school he engaged in the mercantile pursuits. In 1875 he entered the Downingtown National Bank as clerk. This banking institution was organized on September 3, 1860, as a State bank, and its doors were opened for business on May 16, 1861. It became a National bank on December 30, 1864. The first president was Charles Downing, who held office from November 23, 1860, until May 3, 1863. He was succeeded by David Shelmire, holding office from June 1, 1863, to November 9, 1863. William Tremble filled the presidency from November 23, 1863, to December 18, 1863, being followed by William Edge, who was president of the bank from December 19, 1863 to May 29, 1865. Jacob Edge took up the duties as Mr. Edge laid them down, and was head of the bank until 1889. Joseph R. Downing succeeded him and was president for 28 years, ending with 1917. Thomas W. Downing became president in 1917 and continues to hold the office in 1925. He passed through the various posts from clerk in the bank to cashier, and finally its president. The cashiers of the bank have been Milton Ruth, Joseph R. Downing, Thomas W. Downing, and E. F. Fisher. Thomas W. Downing is a member of the board of directors; a director of the Downingtown Manufacturing Company; and president of the Downingtown Library Association. County Carlow, Ireland, had a son Thomas, who in 1715 married Mary, daughter of Thomas and Mary (Hooper) Parke, of Battytean, County Carlow, and became the progenitor of the family in America. He was born in 1693, and about 1720 came to America, locating in Chester County, Penn. Later he moved into what became Montgomery County of the same State, where his death occurred in 1747. Thomas Parke appears to have been a farmer in Ireland, owning in 1720 land in Ballileau, Ballaghmore and Coolissnactah. In 1724 he came to America bringing with him his family, and located in the great valley on the west side of what is now Downington, where he had purchased 500 acres of land. He died January 31,1738, and his widow on June 21, 1749. He was an elder in Caln Meeting, and esteemed by Friends." at Citation.⁵ He and Rebecca Hooper were Quaker.⁶

; There's really no proof Matthews' wife's last name. But looking at the following one would think that it would be.

Matthew signed as next of kin on a William Noble 's inventory in Dorchester Co., Md. in 1772. Possible, Mary's brothers???? Then there is Noble their son, could was probably their first born son.

The 23 day of November 1784 - There came Mary Hutton and Andrew Satterfield the two subscribing witnesses to the within last will and testament of Matthew Covey late of Caroline County deceased, and severally made oath on the Holy Evangels of almighty God that they did see the testator therin named sign and seal this will, and that they heard him publish pronounce and declare the same to be the last will and testament, that at the time of his so doing he was to the best of their apprehersions of sound disposing mind, memory and understanding and that they respectively subscribed their names as witnesses to this will in the presence and at the request of the testator, and in the presence of each other.

Records show that some of Matthew's children were members of the "Nicholities".
This was a relegious group that broke away from the Quakers. Which leads me to believe that at one time the Coveys were Quakers. Which would explain several things. Anyway, Matthew's son, Noble was a known member, also it's believed that at lease two of Matthews' daughters married members of this group, all are believed to have gone into Rowan Co., NC, as well as another brother, William. It's not known if William was part of the movement or not. It is known that in later years the William was part of the Methodist church.

The following is a little back ground on the "NIcholities"::

Around 1779 there was a migration of people into the Deep River section of Rowan Co. These people belonged to a sect known as "Nicholities". They have been so overlooked that even their descendants do not know of them. Some of these families, included; Grays, Littleton, Coveys, Peggs, Chipmans, Wheelers and Horneys. This movemnent was founded by Joseph Nichols around 1760. Joseph was from Kent Co., De., had not been a religious person and spent his free time partying with his friends. During one of these escapades, one of his friends became ill and died. Supposely the experience shook him so that he began preaching to his friends of the light that he had come to believe shown in the understanding of man and to obedience to an "Inward Director." The area where all this took place was heavy populated by Quakes. The Nicholities were greatly influenced by and had many similarities to the Society of Friends. They did not believe in paid ministers, all marriages, births and death were to be recorded. Marriages were to be performed in the same manner as Quakers and marriage to a non-Nicholite would cause one to be disowned from meeting. Nicholities, like Quakers didn't believe in fighting and suffered many hardships during the American Revolution. They were often referred to as "Friend" or "New Quakers."

The biggest difference between the Nicholities and Quakers was, the Nicholities saw evil in too much education and seldom had their children taught beyond the ability to read and write. Most lacked the basic education.

They wore plain clothes, black and white. Traveled by foot and opposed slavery. After, Joseph's death, in Dec 1770. Shortly after the out-break of the American Revolution the group, mostly from the Delaware area migrated to NC, where they settled in the south western corner of Guilford Co.,NC. Paris Chipman and Joseph Standley were the leaders.

In 1774 nine Nicholities signed a petition to the NC General Assembly, for relief from taking oaths and bearing arms. The nine signer were: James Caldwell, Levin Charles, William Charles, Paris Chipman, John Horney, William Horney, Valentine Pegg, (who's sister married Noble Covey), Joseph Standley, and William Wheeler.

Noble Covey was one of the signers of the 1774 decision to organize the Nicholite Society. Noble's second marriage was to Mary Pegg Bicham, sister to Valentine and Martin Pegg. At the time Noble lived in Rowan Co., which is now known as Davidson. Also, Benjamin Shaw who married Rhoda Covey, daughter of Noble was also amember of this group.

The Edward Covey who married the Mary Bradley is still a puzzle. Here's what I've found on Mary's father, maybe it will help somewhere along the line in determining where the Edward comes in at.

Know ye that I Mary Covey for in consideration of the good will and affection I bear unto my son Richard Covey of the same county have given and granted by these presents do fully freely clearly and absolutely give, grant unto the said Richard Covey all and singular my goods and chattles to his heirs and assigns only one bay mare with________her forehead together with all the right title and interest I the said Mary or any of heirs executors administrators of or assigns may hereafter have of to or in the said granted premises or any part thereof to have and to hold the said granted premises unto him the said Richard Covey his heirs and assigns forever absolutely without any manner of condition as I the said Mary Covey have fully freely and absolutely and of my own word_______put in further testimony in witness of whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 9th day of June anno domini 1725 one thousand and seven hundred and twenty-five.

I humbly certifie that I have resurveyed for and in the name of him the aforesaid Matthew Covey the aforesaid tract or parcel of land and find it to contain 36 acres to which I have added sixty-four acres of vacant land and have reduced the whole into one entire tract now called Battle Hill lying and being in the county aforesaid beginning for the out bounds of the whole tract at a marked white oak the original bounder of the aforesaid Francis Hill standing on the edge of a small round swamp or glade and on the east side of the road that leads from Hunting Creek Church by Matthew Coveys and between said Coveys and Richard Andrews then runs east southeast eighty perches then south thirty degrees east fifty-two perches then south one hundred and thirty perches then west forty perches then north one hundred and forty perches then west ninety perches then north ten degrees west seventeen perches then southwest by south thirteen perches then west northwest forty perches then north ninety-five perches then with a straight line to the first beginning containing one hundred acres of land more or less to be holden of the Manor of Nanticoak.

Caroline County--Be it remembered that on the 20th day of January in the year of our Lord 1776 came William Covey of Caroline County and brought a deed of bargain and sale with two indorsements thereon and prayed to have the same enrolled amongst the records of Caroline County and upon the same 20th day on January in the year of our Lord 1776 aforesaid the same deed with the two indorsments thereon were enrolled as follows to wit.

This indenture made this 24th day of November, 1775 by and between Matthew Covey of Caroline Co. In Maryland of the one part and William Covey of the other part witnesseth that the said Matthew Covey for and in consideration of the sum of 10 shillings common money to him in hand paid by the said William Covey have given granted bargain'd sold alien'd enfeof'd and convey'd and by these presents doth give grant bargain sell alien enfeof convey and confirm unto the said William Covey all that tract or percel of land called and known by the name of Battle Hill beginning the original boundery aforesaid tract and runing with the several courses agreable to the plat and certificate thereof containing one hundred acres more or less to him the said William Covey his heirs and assigns forever with all houses fences trees gardens improvements and impurtenances whatsoever to him the said William Covey his heirs and assigns and the said Matthew Covey doth further agree to and with the said William Covey his heirs and assigns that the said Matthew Covey his heirs and executors and administrators will suffer this deed and at any time hereafter make and cause this and all other and further deeds for the better conveying the aforesaid land and premises to him the said William Covey his heirs or assigns in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year first above written.
