; Wiley [1893:836] says "He never married". marriage was apparently after the date of wiley's book.1,3

Birth: Jan. 20, 1830, Lionville, Chester County, Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Mar. 22, 1907, Lionville, Chester County, Pennsylvania, USA
From "Biographical and Portrait Cyclopedia of Chester county, PA" (1893), pg. 836: "Thomas Downing, one of the progressive and prosperous farmers of Uwchlan Township, who is well known for his success in agriculture and the prominent part he takes in political affairs, is the second son of William S. and Thomazine (Mason) Downing. He was reared in the old Downing homestead near Lionville, and received his education in the public schools of that village. He has always resided on the farm where he was born, and devoted his life to agricultural pursuits, including stock raising and marketing. His farm contains two hundred and five acres of valuable land, most of which is improved and in a fine state of cultivation. In his political affiliations, Mr. Downing has always been a Republican, and takes an active part in the politics of Chester county. He never married."
Well, he did, two years later, to Anna Beidler, but due to their maturity there was no issue of the marriage.
Additional Obit: Daily Local News, March 23, 1907
Last night, at his home in Lionville, Thomas Downing, a veteran farmer, died in his 78th year, in the house where he was born.
He was a son of William and Thamzine Downing, who lived in that same house during his childhood, but afterward moved to a larger one. In the latter home Thomas grew up and there he eventually managed the farm of 200 acres belonging to the family. A few years ago he rented the farm and left the large house for the smaller one, where he spent his declining days.
He was quiet and industrious, Friendly in religious views, and fond of the old neighborhood. He never lived out of Lionville, and it was said he probably never slept out of the town a dozen nights during his long life.
About a decade ago he decided to give up his bachelorhood and at that time he married Annie Beidler, who survives him. He leaves one sister, Sallie, wife of Holland Beidler, of Newtown Square, and one brother, Henry Downing.
