Obituary of Benjamin Riter from the Fort Madison, Iowa,'Democrat', page 8: 'The sad news of the death of that old time friend of everybody, 'Uncle' Benjamin Riter, of Appanoose Twp., IL, has reached us. The old gentleman had reached his 84th year, and there were few men of forty who had a stronger constitution, barring rheumatism, which had troubled him some during his later years. He had been confined to the house but a few weeks when at 6:50, Sunday night, he passed away. He was at his son's, Mr. C. C. Riter, at the time of hi death, from whose residence the funeral will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m., the Rev. Dr. Coburn officiating. Remains will be interred at Nauvoo. 'We are in strong sympathy with those who are near to the good old gentleman, who have the consolation of knowing that Benjamin Riter was a man of noble qualities, and an unsullied pattern for the young.'
