Rolla New Era Newspaper - Saturday, May 26, 1883, Rolla, Missouri, United States Of America
"One of the most distressing accidents that is has been our melancholy duty to chronicle occurred just east of Arlington on Thursday evening last about five o'clock wherein, Anvil M. Murphy and Mr. Babcock, both of Dixon were instantly killed, and Chas. White, of Cuba, a brakeman, had his skull fractured.
"The accident occurred as follows: No. 28 had just left Arlington and Murphy and Babcock were on the train on their way to attend the foot races that took place at this place yesterday, and for which race, Mr. Murphy, being of a sporting turn, had entered a Mr. Rollins, an employee of the Middle Division of the Frisco. On a flat car was a thrashing machine and up on this threshing machine and out on the straw conveyor the doomed men and the brakeman climbed; the only support of this is a small dog or ratchet and this broke and pitched Murphy and Babcock right down in between the rails, and under the cars, Murphy to the north of the coupling and Babcock south of the coupling, and the brakemen out over the side on his head. The bodies threw the car off the track and Murphy's body was literally torn to atoms, as the several hundred pieces of his body were collected and put in a box two feet long. Babcock's body was not mutilated so badly, but he was almost cut in two. The sorrowful news was telegraphed to Dixon and to this place and created a sad impression on the whole community.
"Mr. Murphy was a nice, pleasant, amiable gentleman, and his loss is deeply deplored. He leaves a wife and two children. Mrs. Murphy is a daughter of Dr. Moore of Hancock. Mr. Babcock leaves a wife and one child.
"This distressing accident adds another chapter to the many fatal accidents that has occurred on the Frisco in the last few months.
"Chas. White, the wounded brakeman, was brought to Rolla that evening and after receiving some medical treatment was taken to his home at Cuba.
