Matthew Marvin Sr. was born in March 1600 at Great Bentley, Tendring District, co. Essex, England.2 He married Elizabeth (?) before 1622 at England
; According to their FaG memorials, their first born child, Elizabeth, was born 1622.3 Matthew Marvin Sr. married Alice Kellogg, daughter of John Kellogg and Alice Pratt, circa 1647
; her 2nd husband.1,4
Matthew Marvin Sr. was buried in 1680 at East Norwalk Historical Cemetery, Norwalk, Fairfield Co., Connecticut, USA;
From Find a Grave: Matthew Marvin Sr.
Birth     Mar 1600, Great Bentley, Tendring District, Essex, England
Death     1680 (aged 79–80), Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut, USA
Burial     East Norwalk Historical Cemetery, Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut, USA
Matthew Marvin, the immigrant ancestor, was baptized on 26 March 1600 in the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Great Bentley, Essex, England. He was apparently the son of Edward Marvin and Margaret ------.
Before 1622, he married Elizabeth [Gregory?] in England, probably in Great Bentley. She was born around 1604; her parentage is presently unproven, as are assertions that her surname was Gregory. They had seven children (the first five baptized in Great Bentley):
     i Elizabeth bpt. 15 September 1622 m. John Olmstead
     ii Matthew bpt. 8 November 1626 m. Mary ------
     iii Mary bpt. 15 December 1628 m. (1) Richard Bushnell; m. (2) Thomas Adgate
     iv Sarah bpt. 27 December 1631 m. (1) William Goodrich; m. (2) William Curtis
     v Hannah b.c. October 1634 m. Thomas Seymour
     vi Abigail b.c. 1637 m. John Bouton
     vii Rebecca b.c. 1639 m. John Clark
The last mention of his in the local records was a 22 August 1633 church record that "William Littleburye, the servant of Matthew Marvin, was buried." Matthew and Elizabeth and their first five children sailed for New England aboard the Increase on 15 April 1635, having "taken the oathes of Allegeance and Supremacie: As also being conformable to the Government and discipline of the Church of England, whereof they brought testimony pr Cert. from ye Justices and ministers wher there abodes have latlie been."
Although they probably landed in Massachusetts Bay first, that same year they were among the original twelve settlers of Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut. They were firmly established there before 1638, and his name appears on the city's Founders Monument.
Elizabeth died around 1642, probably in Hartford. Around 1647, he married Alice (------) Bouton, the widow of his daughter-in-law's father John Bouton . They had two children (baptized in Hartford):
viii Samuel bpt. 6 February 1647/8 d. young
ix Rachel bpt. 30 December 1649 m. Samuel Smith
Matthew apparently contemplated moving to Farmington, Hartford County (just a few miles to the west of the town of Hartford), Connecticut, where his brother Reinold had settled; he owned both lands and dwelling houses there. He decided against it though, and before 1653 -- the date the transfer was recorded -- he sold his Farmington holdings to Nathaniel Kellogg. Instead, on 19 June 1650, he was one of those who signed an agreement for the founding of Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut, where he was one of the original grantees. His name also appears third on a deed dated 15 February 1651 from the Indian sachem Runckiriheage.
He died in Norwalk in 1680, probably in July since his estate was inventoried on 12 July. His will was dated 20 December 1678.
