THE FIRST GRIST MILL IN JACKSON COUNTY OHIO

The first grist mill built in Jackson County was a corn mill on the Black Fork of Symmes Creek built during the year 1808, by Daniel Faulkner. Faulkner's Mill and the Union Baptist Church were within two hundred yards of each other. The church was on a high hill, a little south-west of the mill. It was a hewed log house with a gallery in it. The father of Davis Mackley hewed the logs for the first church. They settled on the clear fork of Symmes Creek, a mile and a half south-west of Faulkner's Mill. This was in Greenfield Township, Gallia County. They found several Baptist in the neighborhood. Among them: Phillip Lambert, Benjamin, Gilbert and John Bennett, John Rose and others. The Ohio Baptist Association was organized in 1819 at Storms Creek, Lawrence County.¹

     Elizabeth Bennett was listed as a resident in Samuel Bennett Sr.'s household in the census report in 1810 at Wallkill, Orange Co., New York, USA;
Samuel appears to have been in Allegheny Co., PA in 1800 and in Scioto Co., OH in 1820. It is not certain if this census entry si for him or not, in spite of the larg number of children recorded. If it is the same Samuel, it is unclear where Samuel's wife, Mary, was during the 1810 census.
