Transcript From: BOONVILLE WEEKLY OBSERVER July 19, 1856 THE PARTICULARS OF THE HANGING OF JAMES RAY, IN MORGAN COUNTY, MO., JULY 8th, BY MOB LAW
According to a witness (Noah G Kelly) for his daughter Elizabeth on her application for admission (U.S., Native American Applications for Enrollment in Five Civilized Tribes, 1896), James was buried on the Vaught farm (wife Sarah's father) near where the Ray house was located. James Ray's property was less than a mile from Kelly Cemetery.
Noah G Kelly was married to Malinda Jane Vaught (Sarah's sister) and was the brother of Angeline Kelly who was married to Sarah's brother, Claiborn. Noah's son William is buried here also - apparently one of the few marked stones.
The Vaught farm was located between Florence and Glensted, sections 33 and 34 of Mill Creek township.
Kelly Cemetery is located in the SE1/4 of the SE1/4 of section 33. This parcel was originally purchased by John Vaught Jan 1, 1840. John eventually owned most of sections 33 and 34.
James Ray owned land just to the north: sections 21, 22, and 27.
While there is no physical proof that James and Sarah are buried here it seems likely they are.

James Ray appeared in the census of 14 August 1860 at Moreau Township, Morgan Co., Missouri, USA; [This appears to be too young to be the correct James Ray and the correct James died in 1856. Furthermore, the wife's is too young and named Amanda, not Sarah/Sally.]
