The "Cosby Family" made Goochland County, Virginia, their home from the mid 1700's until 1785. Modern-day Goochland has many "historical sites that include Tuckahoe Plantation (the boyhood home of Thomas Jefferson), Dover, Manakin and Tuckahoe coalfields, and much of the James River and Kanawha Canal (surveyed by George Washington). Portions of Three Chopt Trail, a Native American trail, runs through a large portion of the county. The trail was marked by three hatchet chops in trees to show the way. Modern day U.S. Route 250 roughly follows this route as it makes its way from Richmond to Charlottesville." Hickerson Cosby served his country during the Revolutionary War as a sergeant in the 3rd Virginia Regiment, Capt. Valentine Peyton's Company, commanded by Major Charles, Lt. Col. William Heth, He began his training 31 Oct 1777, and his actual service is listed as beginning the 8th of December 1777. He served three years. In June, 1778 he was transferred in the Virginia artillery.      (Revolutionary War Service Records - National Archives Microfilm at www.footnote.com)
The Cosby Family left Goochland County, Virginia, and resettled in Wilkes County, Georgia, in 1785, where their family increased from four children to a total of twelve children. Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, The Cosby burial ground: 1936 Nov. 11 Research made by C.E.D. Burtis Cemetery Location: North of Bumpass, Virginia, 3.5 miles on Route #601, thence .5 of a mile from road through the Sidney Swift place. Louisa County This burial ground is enclosed by a stone wall five feet high, two feet thick, sixty feet by seventy feet, with one opening six feet wide on the west side, with four steps leading to top of the wall. A fine location on a level piece of ground on top of an elevation overlooking the surrounding property. The wall was erected by Overton Peters in the year 1859, and has been kept in good repair by him until his death in 1875. There are three large trees twelve inches or more in diameter, and several small ones, and a great tangle of bushes. There are about thirty graves here many are sunken. The other graves are covered by flat slabs apparently of sandstone, but in a good state of preservation, and supported by stone work about twelve inches high. This burial ground is that of the old Cosby family, who owned large quantities of land in this part of Louisa County. The portion on which it is located, sometime before the War Between the States came into the possession of Hart Peters. It seems that the burial ground was started by a Benjamin Cosby. He didn't name all his other children in his "will" but, some were young and still living at home when he died. It has not been confirmed how many children he had but possibly about 12. Hickerson Cosby was a Rev. War Soldier-Sergeant, 3 CL. Served 3rd Virginia Reg., first in Capt. Robert Powell's Company, then in Capt. Valentine Peyton's Company. His birth year listed as 1759.
