Several of the Wheeler family followed Rev. Peter Bulkeley of Odell, Co. Bedford, to his newly established town of Concord, Mass. I. THOMAS WHEELER
THOMAS1 WHEELER, known as “Sr.,” born at Cranfield, Co. Bedford, about 1591, died at Fairfield, Conn., between 5 May 1654 (date of will) and 23 Aug. 1654 (date of probate); married at Cranfield, 5 May 1613, ANN HALSEY, who died at Fairfield between 21 Aug. 1659 (date of her will) and 20 Oct. 1659 (date of probate).
Several of the Wheeler family followed Rev. Peter Bulkeley of Odell, Co. Bedford, to his newly established town of Concord, Mass. Since some of them had children baptized at Cranfield as late as 1637, most of them probably came over between 1637 and 1640. In September 1644, Thomas Wheeler came with Rev. John Jones from Concord to Fairfield, Conn. Two of his half -brothers also came to Fairfield, of whom Ephraim remained there, but the youngest, who bore the same name as himself, returned eventually to Massachusetts.
The will of Thomas, “Sr.” named his wife Ann; gave his Concord property to his elder son Thomas; mentioned his daughter Sarah wife of Thomas Sherwood and their son Thomas; daughter (not named) and four grandchildren, Mary, James, Thomas and John Bennett; gave his Fairfield lands to his son John; and appointed his brother Thomas Wheeler Lieutenant,” Robert Lockwood, and Andrew Ward, all of Fairfield, overseers. Ephraim Wheeler was an appraiser of his estate.
The will of Ann Wheeler named her elder son Thomas, his wife and children; the children of her daughter Hannah, specifying Sarah and Hannah Bennett; grandchild Sarah Sherwood; Annis Sherwood, wife of her son-in-law; gave to Rebecca Turney, her best hat; and to Ann Squire, a petticoat. The illegible part of the will may have mentioned her other son John.
Children of Thomas and Ann (Halsey) Wheeler, all but the youngest recorded at Cranfield:
i. ANN, bur. 16 July 1615.
+ ii. ANNA called Hannah in Fairfield records), bapt. 15 Feb. 1617/18; m. (1) abt. 1638, JAMES BENNETT, who d. in 1659; m. (2) JOSEPH MIDDLEBROOK, who d. at Fairfield in 1686.
iii. THOMAS, bapt. 8 Dec. 1621; d. at Concord, 24 Dec. 1704; m. (1) SARAH who d. at Concord, 1 Feb. 1676/7; m. (2) at Concord, 23 July 1677, SARAH (BEERS) STEARNS, dau. of Capt. Richard Beers and widow of Isaac Stearns of Cambridge.6
