;
Bryan & Rose [1876:332-3] discusses two FERGUSON families of Virginia who moved to Callawy Co. The first to arrive was the family of Joshua and Mary STONE) FERGUSON of Fairfax Co., VA, who arrived in 1817. Bryan & Rose list eight children:
-- John S.
-- William
-- James
-- Polly
-- Sally
-- Nancy
-- Elizabeth
-- Rachel
The second was the family of John and France (LUCAS) FERGUSON of VA who arrived in 1820. Bryan & Rose list nine children:
-- Moses
-- Ann
-- John
-- Sarah
-- Nancy
-- Swan
-- Napoleon
-- Mary
Both families are found in the 1830 census for that county:
1. Joshua, with his two sons, James and John.
2. Several sons and/or grandsons of John: Moses I and Moses 2, Swan and Napoleon.
NB: It's not entirely clear which of the two FERGUSON families that the 1830 John FERGUSON belongs too, but it seems to me most likely that he is the son of Joshua since he is next to James (a son of Joshua). However, there is a Moses, a Swan and a Napoleon on the same page (members of the 2nd FERGUSON family.
It is possible that the two families were related, but two different family trees on Ancestry.com show the father of John, head of family #2, to have been a Capt. Robert FERGUSON and no linkage to the family of Joshua.This agrees with Bryan & Rose [1876:332] who says that John's "...father was a sea captain."8,9,10,11

; Bryan & Rose [1876:332-3]: "Ferguson.—Joshua Ferguson, of Fairfax county, Va., was a wagon master in the revolutionary war. After the close of the war he settled in Kentucky, where he married Mary Stone, by whom he had—John S., William, James, Polly, Sally, Nancy, Elizabeth, and Rachel. Mr, Ferguson came to Missouri and settled in Callaway county in 1817. His son, John S., married Mary Jones, of Kentucky, and settled in Callaway county the same year his father did. He had fifteen children, twelve of whom lived to be grown, viz. : Thomas J., Elizabeth, John R., William S., Joshua, J., Sarah, Marion, Louisa, Nancy, Emma, Jane, and Lucy. Joshua aqd Thomas built the first court house at Fulton, in 1826, for which they received $1,300. Such a house could not be built now for less than four or five thousand dollars. James Ferguson married Mary A. McGruder, of Kentucky, and settled in Callaway county in 1817. Rebecca married Dennis Askrens, who settled in Callaway county in 1817. Nancy married George Hirsch, who settled in Callaway county in 1823."6 Joshua Calvin Ferguson and Mary Stone resided at Cote Sans Dessein Township, Callaway Co., Missouri, USA, in 1817;
from Find A Grave: "In 1817 he and his family moved again to Cote Sans Dessien, Callaway County, Missouri and started anew. Joshua bought land in Callaway and Saline counties in Missouri and farmed the land."
per Bryan & Rose [1876:332]: "Mr. Ferguson came to Missouri and settled in Callaway county in 1817."7,2
John Stone Ferguson and Mary James lived in 1817 at Cote Sans Dessein Township, Callaway Co., Missouri, USA;
per Find A Grave: "John and his wife continued to live in Kentucky until 1817 at which time he and his wife moved to Cote Sans Dessien, Callaway County, Missouri."1
;
