"Jan I, Heer van Egmond, was born about 1310, the son of Wouter II, Heer van Egmond, and Beatrijs van de Doortoge. He was lord of Egmond and IJsselstein, bailiff of Kennemerland (1353-1354) and governor of Holland.
"Jan was first mentioned in 1328 taking part in the Battle of Cassel, and he supported Willem III 'the Good', Graaf van Holland and Hainault, against the rebels of Brugge. About March 1331 he married Guyotte van Amstel, heiress of IJsselstein, only child of Arnoud van Amstel, Heer van IJsselstein, Oudshoorn en Aarlanderveen, and Maria d'Avesnes, the illegitimate daughter of Guy d'Avesnes, bishop of Utrecht, a son of Jan I d'Avesnes, count of Hainault and Aleida of Holland. Jan and Guyotte had at least ten children of whom Arend and Gerrit and four daughters would have progeny. Through his wife he inherited IJsselstein when his father-in-law died in 1362.
"In 1343 he was appointed among the nobles ruling the land during the absence of the count. In 1344 the castle of Nieuwendoorn (Enigenburch) was added to his estate. He took part in the third campaign of Willem IV, Graaf van Holland and Hainault, to Prussia, and was also involved in the Siege of Utrecht in 1345, but he was not present at Willem's defeat by the Friesians at the Battle of Warns (Stavoren) in that year, in which Willem was killed.
"In the following years Jan played an important role in the politics of Holland. In January 1350 he was one of the main signatories to the covenant which formed the Kabeljauwse (Cod) League, supporting Willem V, Graaf van Holland and Hainault, against his mother Margaretha, Gravin van Holland, Zeeland en Henegouwen (the successor to her brother Willem IV), for control of Holland and Hainaut, which triggered the wars between the Cods and the Hook (Hoeken) party supporting Margaretha.
"He was present at the Battle of Naarden in 1350, and fought in the Battle of Zwartewaal (also called the Battle of the Meuse). Jan was then sent to England to negotiate for Willem in his dispute with his mother, but it remained unresolved. On his return to Holland he launched a campaign against the citizens of Bunschoten. When the war against the Hooks was resumed at the end of the winter of 1356, on the orders of Willem V he besieged the castle of Nyevelt, capturing it after seven weeks, which brought the war to an end. In that year Willem VI appointed Jan governor (stadhouder) of Holland north of the river Maas, which he exercised in conjunction with his brother Gerrit.
"After Willem V was declared insane in 1357, Jan took part in the ministry of Willem's younger brother Albrecht von Bayern, who acted as regent for the rest of Willem's life, and succeeded him as Graaf van Holland, Zeeland and Henegouwen after his death. Jan is mentioned as one of Albrecht's counsellors in 1358. As one of the leaders of the Cod party Jan signed the Treaty of Delft in 1359. For the rest of his life he was among those close to Albrecht.
"Jan died on 28 December 1369, and was buried in the church of IJsselstein."1

Hendrik II de Rovere Burggraaf van Montfoort1
M, #93793, b. circa 1305, d. before 14 April 1333
Last Edited | 2 Feb 2020 |
Hendrik II de Rovere Burggraaf van Montfoort married Agnes van Amstel van IJsselstein, daughter of Gijsbrecht van Amstel Heer van Benschop and IJsselstein and Beerta van Arkel van Heukelom.1
Hendrik II de Rovere Burggraaf van Montfoort was born circa 1305.1
Hendrik II de Rovere Burggraaf van Montfoort died before 14 April 1333.1
; Per Genealogics "Hendrik II de Rovere, Burggraaf van Montfoort, was born about 1305, the son of Zweder I, Burggraaf van Montfoort, and Catharina, the natural daughter of Floris V, Graaf van Holland, by an unnamed mistress. Early in 1323, against the wishes of his father Hendrik married Agnes van IJsselstein van Amstel, daughter of Gijsbrecht van Amstel, Heer van Benschop en IJsselstein, and Beerta van Arkel van Heukelom. His parents' opposition to the match stemmed from an enmity between Jan I, the legitimate son and successor of Floris V, and the parents of Agnes over the murder of Floris V in 1296, in which her father's uncle was implicated. As a result of his marriage, Hendrik was deprived of his income by his father. However, with his father-in-law's assistance he imprisoned both his parents. On 26 April 1327 the count of Holland judged over the quarrel between Hendrik and his father. Zweder I died between 28 May 1329 and 2 January 1331, and on 2 January 1331 the bishop of Utrecht acknowledged Hendrik as his father's heir. Hendrik and Agnes had a son Zweder II who would have progeny. Hendrik died before 14 April 1333."1

"Dirk I van Teylinghe was born about 1180, the son of Willem van Teylinghe. He is seen by historians as the founder of the house of Brederode. However the territory of Brederode had already been in the possession of his father, who came from the van Teylinghe family, making it possible to consider Willem to be the first lord of Brederode.
"Around 1215 Dirk married Alveradis van Heusden, daughter of Jan I van Heusden, Heer van Heusden, and Aleydis Perseyn. They had at least six children of whom Willem and Floris would have progeny.
"In 1226 Dirk was appointed _drost_ (seneschal) at the court of the count of Holland; he served under Count Floris IV and his son Willem II. During the absence of the count he was the highest official in the county.
"After Dirk's death in 1236, his widow Alveradis married Herbaren II van der Lede."1

; Per Genealogics:
"The domain of the lords of Arkel was in the county of Teisterbant between the Lek and Merwede rivers. This domain included not only its capital, Gorinchem, but also the towns of Heukelom, Asperen, Leerdam, Gasperen, Hagestein, Haasdrecht and Schoonrewoerd as well as Everstein, Reinestein, Bergambacht, Zoelen, and Oosterwijk. Somewhere between 1247 and 1267, Gorinchem became the property of the lords of Arkel. Their castle probably sat on the left bank of the Linge across from the present church in Arkel. A second castle, which was built in the 13th century to the east of Gorinchem, was destroyed in 1412 by Willem VI, count of Holland, in his war with Jan V, the last lord of Arkel.
"Jan I is the first recorded lord of Arkel. He was born about 1233, the son of Herbaren van der Lede, knight, and Aleid van Heusden. Jan's ancestors originally came from Lede and had land between the Lek and Merwede rivers. He married Berta van Ochten, daughter of Ricold, Heer van Ochten, and his wife Jutta. Jan and Berta had a son Jan II who would have progeny.
"Jan is mentioned between 1253 and 1264. He had a reputation for great strength, and was said to have lifted himself and his horse off the ground by pulling with his arms on the wooden beams in the town gates of Gorinchem.
"Jan died in 1272, and was buried in Gorinchem."1
