"Jan II, Heer van Egmond, was the son of Arend, Heer van Egmond, and Gräfin Jolanda von Leiningen. He was already well-established when he improved his family's fortunes in 1409 through a runaway marriage with Maria van Arkel, daughter of Jan V van Arkel, Heer van Arkel, Gorinchem, Leerdam en Hagestein, and Johanna von Jülich. Maria was well connected; after her brother Jonker Willem she was in line to inherit the duchy of Gelre from their uncle Reinald IV, duke of Gelre and Jülich. Jan and Maria had two sons, Arnold and Willem, who would both have progeny.
"Although Maria's father and brother were in favour with Albrecht, count of Holland, Zeeland and Hainault, they were enemies of that count's son and heir. In 1404 the son became Count Willem VI of Holland who then attacked the van Arkel territories and in 1412 incorporated them into Holland. In 1415 Maria's father Jan V van Arkel was imprisoned and on 1 December 1417 her brother Jonker Willem van Arkel was killed attempting to reconquer the city of Gorinchem from the Hoeken, the partisans of Jacoba of Bavaria, countess of Holland, Zeeland and Hainault, the daughter of Willem VI. In 1428 a treaty was signed which meant defeat for Count Willem VI's party, but it came too late for the van Arkel family, as Jan V van Arkel had died the same year. Maria herself died as early as 1415.
"Following the death in 1423 of Reinald IV, duke of Gelre and Jülich. Jan II of Egmond became regent of Gelre on behalf of his son Arnold, who was then only thirteen. Reinald IV, the brother of Arnold's maternal grandmother Johanna von Jülich, having left no legitimate progeny, had made Arnold his heir, as both his mother Maria and uncle Jonker Willem were dead.
"Jan died on 4 January 1451 aged about sixty-six. He had received the nickname of Jan 'met de bellen' (with the bells) because in battle he had worn a belt with silver bells attached."1

"Willem van Egmond, Heer van Egmond en IJsselstein, was born on 26 January 1412, the younger son of Jan II, Heer van Egmond and Maria van Arkel. On 22 January 1437 he married Walburga von Mörs und Saarwerden, daughter of Friedrich IV, Graf von Mörs und Saarwerden, and Engelberta von Kleef. They had seven children of whom three sons and two daughters would have progeny. Walburga had inherited Baer and Lathum from Walraven van Baer, a close relative.
"Willem, whose elder brother was Arnold van Egmond, duke of Gelre, grew up in the court of his great-uncle Duke Reinoud IV of Gelre, following the custom of sending the young to a friendly court for their education, to build their independence. Arnold inherited the duchy of Gelre after the death of Reinoud IV, who was childless, in 1423. Willem was one of the most important members of the nobility of Holland, both because of his many estates in the county and because of his ties with his elder brother Arnold, duke of Gelre. Willem was from the start Arnold's principal counsellor, and his heir presumptive in the period when Arnold was without descendants.
"In 1431 Willem collected Katharina von Kleef, his brother's bride, from Lobith. In 1437 Arnold returned the favour when he collected Walburga, Willem's bride, from Venlo.
"In 1444 during a campaign by Gelre against Juliers, Willem was knighted and joined the council of government formed to cover the period of Arnold's pilgrimage to the Holy Land (1450-1452). In 1451, after the death of his father Jan and his uncle Willem van Egmond, Heer van IJsselstein, he received all their lordships (Egmond, IJsselstein, Leerdam, Haastrecht and Schoonderwoerd) following a property division on 25 January 1438 with Arnold. As part of the division, Willem passed 31 of Jan's books to Arnold, the documentation for this transfer providing a unique opportunity to observe the kinds of books owned by the aristocracy of the time. There were books on religious and legal subjects, but also books on training falcons and on riding. Willem kept a book entitled _Dat boeck de proprietatibus rerum_ a scientific encyclopaedia.
"In 1444 Arnold offered him the lordship of Malines, but Willem never received it, as it fell into the hands of the dukes of Burgundy. However Philippe 'the Good' well appreciated Willem's important position by leasing to him the bailiwick of Alkmaar for 50 years (on 13 July 1451) and taking him into the heart of the Council of Holland (on 19 January 1452). Willem did not take up the position of counsellor until 27 January 1456. He was officially replaced in 1459 because he lived almost permanently in Gelre to intervene in the conflicts between Arnold and his son Adolf. When Adolf imprisoned his father in 1465, and he had himself recognised as duke, Willem led Arnold's supporters, strongly supported by his own sons Jan, Frederik and Willem, as well as by the duke of Burgundy. Charles 'the Bold' forced Adolf to release Arnold, and acquired the duchy of Gelre from Arnold for 300,000 golden Rhine guilders in December 1472. In 1473 Arnold made Charles 'the Bold' his heir; immediately after Arnold's release, Charles made himself master of the duchy by force of arms. In recompense for his services, Willem was made stadhouder (governor) of Gelre (on 16 July 1473) and performed this function until 1477, although because of his age he had wanted to give up the position in 1474.
"In Holland Willem had become head of the Kabeljauwen, the faction representing the nobility. Their request to Marie of Burgundy in 1477 to appoint him governor of Holland and Zeeland was not honoured, so as not to alienate the Hoeken party, representing the cities. However in the same year he became chamberlain to Maximilian of Austria, and in May 1478 he was made a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece, at its 13th chapter at Bruges, by Maximilian, later Holy Roman Emperor, who had become head of the order after the death of Charles 'the Bold' at the battle of Nancy on 5 January 1477. Over these years Willem lived for the most part in Gelre, where he headed the pro-Burgundy party, focusing as much on the diplomatic as on military fronts.
"Willem died at Grave on 19 January 1483, having almost reached the age of 71, and was buried alongside Arnold, the man who had always been at his side."1

"Arend, Heer van Egmond, was born about 1340, the son of Jan I, Heer van Egmond, and Guyotte van Amstel, heiress of IJsselstein. He was lord of Egmond and IJsselstein. With his wife Jolanda, Gräfin von Leiningen, he had two sons, Jan II and Willem, of whom the former would have progeny. He also had an illegitimate son Willem, bastaard van Egmond.
"From 1372 Arend was a member of the ministry of Albrecht von Bayern, regent of Holland, Zeeland and Hainaut. In 1396 he took part in the campaigns against the West Friesians, and in 1398 he acquired the seigniories of the Ameland and Het Bilt in Friesland. In 1400 he commanded the troops who stabilised Friesland. Because of his allegiance to the Cod party, Arend was in conflict with Albrecht's son and successor Willem VI, Graaf van Holland, Zeeland en Henegauwen.
"Arend died on 9 April 1409 and was buried in the abbey of IJsselstein. His wife died on 24 April 1434 and was buried in the Dominican abbey in 's-Gravenhage."1

"Arnold I of Egmond, in Dutch Arnoud, Arend, or Arent van Egmond, (c.?1337 – 9 April 1409) was Lord of Egmond and IJsselstein.
"He was the son of John I of Egmond and his wife, Guida of IJsselstein. From 1372, he was a member of the ministerial council of Albert of Bavaria. In 1394 he founded a Cistercian monastery outside the walls of IJsselstein. In Egmond aan den Hoef he renovated the chapel at the ancestral castle, surrounded the castle with a moat, and had a canal dug to connect it with Alkmaar.[1] In 1396, he participated in the military campaign in West Friesland. In 1398, he was enfeoffed with the Lordships of Ameland and De Bilt. He was commander of the Dutch troops who were tasked with stabilizing Frisia. There was a dispute with Count William VI of Holland, because Arnold supported the Cod side in the Hook and Cod wars. Arnold died at the age of 72 and was buried in the monastery at IJsselstein.
"Arnold married Jolanthe of Leiningen (d. 24 April 1434, the daughter of Frederick VII of Leiningen-Dagsburg and Jolanthe of Gulik). They had two surviving sons:

"CATHERINE de Hans (-[before 1348]). Barthélemy records her parentage and marriage with “Ferry de Linanges seigneur de Franquestin”[1018]. Jolanda (?) married Dietrich Luf (III) von Kleve Graf von Hülchrath, son of Dietrich Luf von Kleve Graf von Hülchrath and Lisa von Virneburg,
;
His 1st wife.2,1,3
Reference: Genealogics cites: Europäische Stammtafeln, J.A. Stargardt Verlag, Marburg, Schwennicke, Detlev (Ed.) 6:21.1 Jolanda (?) was also known as Yolande de Looz.4,3
; Per Med Lands:
"DIETRICH LUF (-10 Jul 1332). Graf von Hülchrath [Hilkenrode]. "Theodericus de Cleue comes de Hilkerode" divided "hereditatis sue paterne" with "fratri nostro Syfrido dicto Luf" by charter dated 21 May 1311[1213].
"m firstly YOLANDE de Looz, daughter of [ARNOUL [V] Comte de Looz et de Chiny & his wife Margareta von Vianden]. Europäische Stammtafeln names “Jolanda” as the first wife of Dietrich Luf and mother of his daughter Elisabeth, without providing any family background or dates[1214]. Her family origin is indicated by the charter dated 19 May 1330 under which her husband ‘Theodericus Luof de Cleve dominus de Kervenem” donated property “infra munimentum oppidi Cranenborch” to Bedebur in memory of “sui patris et Jolante de Loen sui quondam thoralis”[1215]. Arnold Berg suggests that Yolande was the daughter of Arnoul [V] Comte de Looz et de Chiny, supported by the chronology, the repeated use of the name Yolande in the family of Arnoul [V]’s wife (inherited from her Courtenay ancestors), and the resultant consanguinity which would have necessitated the Papal dispensation for the first marriage of Yolande’s daughter Elisabeth von Kleve[1216]. The date of her marriage is indicated because Yolande’s daughter had children born in the early 1330s by her first marriage. If this dating is correct, Yolande was one of her parents’ younger children.
"m secondly (contract 28 Mar 1323) as her first husband, MECHTILD van Voorne, daughter of GERAARD van Voorne & his first wife Heilwig van Borsselen (-12 Mar 1372). Willem III Count of Holland confirmed the marriage contract between “Here Dirc Loef van Cleve Grave van Hilkenrode” and “Veren Machtilden dochter ons...neve des Heren van Voirne” by charter dated 28 Mar 1323[1217]. She married secondly (before 1336) Dirk [IV] van Valkenburg. Dietrich Luf & his first wife had one child."

; Per Genealogics: "Dietrich Luf von Kleve, Graf von Hülchrath, was born about 1260, the younger son of Dietrich VII, Graf von Kleef, and Aleidis von Heinsberg, heiress of Hülchrath and Saffenburg. Dietrich Luf married twice. His first marriage in about 1279 resulted in a daughter Katharina who would have progeny, marrying Graf Diether VI von Katzenelnbogen. On 18 March 1286 Dietrich married Lisa von Virneburg, daughter of Heinrich I, Graf von Virneburg, and Ponzetta von Oberstein. They had numerous children, including his heir Dietrich Luf III, of whom only their daughter Agnes would have progeny, marrying Rogier van Leefdael, Heer van Oirschot en Hilvarenbeek. Dietrich Luf also had several illegitimate children. Dietrich Luf had been provided by his father with his own extensive inheritance, and he pursued very independent policies, often directed against his older brother Dietrich VIII, Graf von Kleef. However his policies were largely unsuccessful and led him into high debts. He served as a vassal of the counts of Gelre and the archbishops of Cologne. From 1296 he carried the title of Graf von Hülchrath and Herr von Tomburg. In 1298 he sold the land of Linn to his brother Dietrich VIII. In 1303 Dietrich Luf sold his southern estates, particularly Tomburg, to Archbishop Wigbold von Holte of Cologne. He died between 23 March 1308 and 8 May 1309."1
