"Otto, Lord of Arkel (c.?1330 – 26 March or 1 April 1396[1]) was Lord of Arkel from 6 May 1360 until his death.
Life
"He was a son of John IV and his wife, Irmengard of Cleves. Otto was born as his parents' second son, after his elder brother John, who died during a tournament in Dordrecht in 1352. During his reign, he further extended the family possessions: he acquired the Lordship of Haastrecht again, and in 1379, he acquired Liesveld.
"Otto became an advisor to Count Albert of Holland. Albert claimed the County of Cleves, after John, the last count, died. However, the Emperor gave Cleves to Adolph II of the Marck. This caused a lasting animosity between the Houses of Arkel and La Marck.
"In 1382, Otto granted town privileges to Gorinchem, Hagestein and Leerdam. In the following years, Otto tried to combine Hagestein Castle and the village of Gasperde and create a new town out of this combination. This was triggered by the Lords of Vianen, who were expanding their territory to the south-west, by annexing Noordeloos and Meerkerk. This isolated some manors Arkel owned in this area. Also, the Lords of Vianen sided with the Hooks.
Marriage and issue
"Otto married in 1360 in Deventer to Elisabeth de Bar (d. 1410), daughter and heiress of Theobald of Bar-Pierrepont. They had one son:

"John III, Lord of Arkel (c. 1275 - 24 December 1324) was Lord of Arkel from 1297 until his death in 1324.
Life
"He was the son of John II, Lord of Arkel and his wife, Bertha van Sterkenburg. He succeeded his father in 1297, after his father died at the battle of Vronen. John III expanded the Arkel lands further and bought lands in Holland and Brabant. He was a councellor to the bishop of Utrecht, Guy of Avesnes. In 1304, he inherited the lands of Ter Leede as he was the only surviving heir of the Ter Leede lineage.
"He was in favor of William I, Count of Hainaut and was appointed judge in 1321 to give a verdict about the differences between William I, Count of Hainaut and John I of Brabant. In later years John III lost his favor of William I, Count of Hainaut to the younger, Willem van Duivenvoorde. Mogelijk is hij op de achtergrond gedrongen door Willem van Duivenvoorde. In that same year he named his eldest son, Sheriff of Ter Leede. In 1324, that son succeeded him as John IV, Lord of Arkel, previously known as Jan van der Lede.
"Jan is buried in Gorinchem, next to his first wife Mabelia of Voorne.
Marriage and Issue
"John married multiple times:
"His first marriage in 1293, was to Mabelia of Voorne (c. 1273 - 26 February 1313), daughter of Albrecht of Voorne and Aleidis van Loon, with whom he had three children:
"In 1310 had John had two illegitimate marriages and thus two illegitimate children:
"In 1314, John married a second time, to Cunegonde of Virneburg (1295-1328). Their children were:

"Jan III, Heer van Arkel, was the son of Jan II, Heer van Arkel. Before 5 December 1305 he married Mabelia van Voorne, daughter of Albrecht, Heer van Voorne, Burggraaf van Zeeland, and Aleida von Looz. They may have been betrothed as early as 1293. On 5 December 1305 Mabelia was endowed with tithes around Leerdam, with which her husband was invested by the bishop of Utrecht. In 1298 Jan was a witness for the count of Gelre. In the following year he is mentioned as a knight.
"Like his father, Jan was a supporter of Jan II d'Avesnes, who became count of Holland in 1299. In return the count endowed him with properties confiscated from Jan II van der Leede. Probably in 1316 he also received Haastrecht in lien from the chapter of Oud-Munster. He rendered various services to the counts of Gelre and Holland; thus he brought 1300 men to the army of Willem III 'the Good', count of Holland and Hainault which invaded Flanders on 27 August 1315. In 1319 he stood with others as guarantor for a possible fine faced by Willem III if he did not adhere to the judgment made in a dispute with count Reinald II of Gelre. In 1311/12, at the request of the count of Holland he had become counsellor to the count's uncle, bishop Guy of Utrecht. In 1319, after the death of Guy, he led an army on behalf of his successor Frederik van Zirk to put down a rebellion in his bishopric.
"Jan and Mabelia had a son Jan IV who would have progeny. Outside that marriage he also had a daughter Margareta who married Gisbert Bot, Heer van der Eem. Mabelia died probably on 26 February 1313. About 1314 Jan married Kunigunde von Virneburg, daughter of Rupprecht II, Graf von Virneburg, and Kunigunde van Cuyck, and widow of Johann II 'der Ältere', Herr von Reifferscheid und Bedbur. Jan and Kunigunde had two children, Mabelia who would have progeny, and Jan who was bishop of Utrecht from 1342 to 1364 and prince-bishop of Liège from 1364 to 1378."1

** John IV, Lord of Arkel (c. 1305 - 5 May 1360)
** Margaret, died young.
** Mabelia of Arkel (c. 1295 - 13 juni 1368), married Gijsbrecht, Lord of Eem (also known as Eemkerk).
** Margaret, died young.
** Mabelia of Arkel (c. 1295 - 13 juni 1368), married Gijsbrecht, Lord of Eem (also known as Eemkerk).
"In 1310 had John had two illegitimate marriages and thus two illegitimate children:
** Jan de Gruyter (b. 1310) from an illegitimate marriage to lady de Gruyter.
** Dirk Alras van Arkel (b. 1315) from an illegitimate marriage to lady van Haestrecht.
** Dirk Alras van Arkel (b. 1315) from an illegitimate marriage to lady van Haestrecht.
"In 1314, John married a second time, to Cunegonde of Virneburg (1295-1328). Their children were:
** John of Arkel, bishop of Utrecht and Liège, (1314-1378)
** Robrecht, Lord of den Berghe and Asperen, (1320-1347)
** Cunegonde of Arkel (1321-1346), married John, Lord of Heusden.
** Robrecht, Lord of den Berghe and Asperen, (1320-1347)
** Cunegonde of Arkel (1321-1346), married John, Lord of Heusden.

"John of Arkel or Jan van Arkel (1314 – 1 July 1378 in Liège) was a Bishop of Utrecht from 1342 to 1364 and Prince-Bishop of Liège from 1364 to 1378.
"John was the son of John III, lord of Arkel, and his second wife Kunigonda of Virneburg. After the death of Bishop John of Diest in 1340 there was a problem with the succession. The chapters had elected John of Bronkhorst, but Pope Benedict XII had appointed Nicola Capocci. This was not accepted by the chapters, and Nicola was forced to withdraw. The eventual appointment of John of Arkel as bishop was due to the influence of Count William IV of Holland.
"His predecessor had left the Sticht as a semi-protectorate of Holland, and the reign of Jan van Arkel was aimed at removing its dependence on Holland. In this he was very successful, and he also straightened out the bishopric's finances. He was supported in these actions by the city of Utrecht, which understood that without a strong central authority, the minor nobility had free rein, which had resulted in the appearance of robber barons and pirates. The city decided to act independently of Holland, and signed an alliance with the bishop in 1344.
"John of Arkel, who had moved to Grenoble in 1343 to save the costs of a household, was called back by his brother and deputy Robert of Arkel in 1345, when Count William IV of Holland decided to deal with the wayward city of Utrecht by sending a large force, besieging the city on 8 July. After eight weeks of siege, Utrecht was forced to recognise the authority of the count of Holland. However, the count was killed two months later, at which the Hook and Cod wars erupted in Holland. Soon the Duchy of Gelderland also became involved in the war, which meant that the Bishopric of Utrecht was left alone for a while.
"As a result of the distraction of its neighbouring counties, the position of the diocese became stronger, and new measures against Holland became possible. With support from Utrecht, the Holland towns of Eemnes and IJsselstein were attacked in 1346, and in 1348 the bishop clashed with both Holland and Gelre. All of these actions cost John more than he could pay, and thus he came into trouble. He loaned the entire Oversticht, except for Vollenhove, to Frederick Eese, who had helped him defeat the Zutphen bannerlord Gijsbrecht of Bronkhorst, in order to pay him off. The following year both Vollenhove and the Nedersticht were also given away in loan. Moreover, the Pope sent a mandate to seize John's goods, because he had not paid the Serviti, or papal confirmation tax.
"John withdrew to Grenoble again, but in 1351 he returned and regained his position and restored his authority in the diocese. He again acted against the robber barons, and he captured several strategically located castles in Utrecht. Stability within the city was restored by the expulsion of the pro-Holland party of the Gunterlingen. After a final campaign against Holland in 1355–1356, a preliminary peace was signed.
"The bishopric was then in a better position than it had been for a long time. The diocese had removed itself from the influence of the count of Holland, and the robber barons had been pacified. However, one of the results was that the city of Utrecht had gained more power in exchange for financial support of John's military operations, which made the city of Utrecht more and more independent.
"In 1364, John of Arkel was moved to the Bishopric of Liège by Pope Urban V. Because of the power of the guilds in Liege, he had less power than in Utrecht, though he annexed the County of Loon in 1366. In 1373 he was forced to set up the Tribunal of the XXII. This was a sovereign decision-making court that defended citizens against any unlawful action of the episcopal officials. It previously had a short-lived existence during the reign of Adolph II de la Marck.
"After his death, John of Arkel was buried in the Cathedral of Utrecht. Following the Protestant Reformation, parts of his tomb were incorporated in a fence that seals off a chapel named after him.
"Because members of the house of Arkel generally had the same name, John, it can be easy to confuse them. Therefore, the bishop John of Arkel is generally referred to as just John, while his namesake family members usually have numerals behind their name to identify them (for example, his father was known as John III of Arkel).4
; Per Med Lands: "JAN van Arkel (-Liège 1 Jul 1377). Willem III Count of Holland granted property “binnen Berghen ende Berchambocht...” to “onsen...Ridder Heren Janne Here van Arkel end Janne sinen broeder” by charter dated 18 Jul 1330[238]. Bishop of Utrecht 1342. Bishop of Liège 1364."

Med Lands cites: [238] Mieris (1754), Tweede deel, p. 500.1 He was Prince-Bishop of Utrecht between 1342 and 1364.4 He was Prince-Bishop of Liège between 1364 and 1378.4
