David Henry Slagle came to La Salle County, Illinois with the family of George Gallaher in 1851. He enlisted in 1861 and refused an opportunity to attend West Point, preferring to remain with his unit. He re-enlisted and served until he was wounded and captured in 1864. He eventually made his way to a hospital in Baltimore and arrived back in Marseilles in June of 1865. He used crutches for a year due to a severe wound on his right ankle. He attended Bryant & Stratton's Commercial College in Chicago. After that, he was appointed postmaster at Marseilles. He continued in that position for 20 years, being appointed by Presidents Grant, Hayes, and Arthur. David Henry Slagle continued to work as a bookkeeper and then as a railway postal clerk. He was active in the Masons, the Illinois National Guards, 3rd Reg., and the Joseph Woodruff Post, No. 281, G. A. R. (information from Vol. 1, Biographical & Genealogical Record of La Salle County, Illinois)
David's maternal grandfather was David H. Hobart, #32919399. His maternal grandmother was Mary, #7982206. David's brother, James, #38686025, and his brother, Oscar, #8111361, were also Civil War veterans.

He was listed on the 1840 census in Lucas County, OH, which became part of Fulton County in Ohio. His children are listed as being born in New York on census reports. The biographical articles about John and Charles Hobart (in the write-up about the town of Marseilles in La Salle County, Illinois) state that they were both born in Steuben County, New York and that their father was a native of New York. Their mother is listed as Mary Williams Hobart, who was born in Wales and died in Ohio. A photo of her grave is posted on Findagrave.com in Fulton County, Ohio. Her grave states "wife of David Hobart." "David & Mary Williams Hobart were the parents of 5 sons and 2 daughters. Sons Andrew J., John S., Robert, Alexander, & Charles are also buried in Riverview Cemetery. The grave of their daughter, Caroline Hobart Slagle, has not yet been found. Her sons James, Oscar, & David Henry Slagle all served in the Civil War from Illinois. James & David H. were wounded-in-action. Oscar received the Medal of Honor for volunteering for a dangerous mission.
"David Hobart remarried to Sarah Rockwood in 1842 in Lucas County, Ohio. Sarah was listed in several La Salle County census reports as being born in Massachusetts ca. 1794. Her grave has not yet been located."
