BIRTH 27 Feb 1853, Texas, USA
DEATH 12 Feb 1926 (aged 72), San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, USA
Son of Gouverneur Howard Nelson (NY) & Malvina Aloise Elder (KY)
San Antonio Express, February 14, 1926
Thomas C. Nelson, 73, 130 Upson Street, civil engineer who had a hand in the construction of the first highways ever built in Bexar County with bond money, died Friday night at his home after a long illness. He was identified with the Bexar County and City of San Antonio engineering departments practically all his life. For 12 years he served as county engineer. He was associated with the present county highway engineer A. A. Pancoast, in the county's first highway work. The bond issue was authorized under the administration of Judge Green and was the first money voted by the taxpayers for highways. Before holding the Bexar County office he was doing engineering work in the Fort Stockton section, when, while in the field, he was wounded in a brush with a number of Indians. He was shot through one of his shoulders and as a result lost the use of one of his arms. After putting the Indians to route he rode a long distance before he received medical attention. Nelon was a member of the Fourth degree Knights of Columbus, of the Holy Name Society, Vincent de Paul Society, Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Woodmen of the World. He served at one time as Counsel Commander of San Antonio Camp No. 520, W. O. W.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Cecilia Elder Nelson of San Antonio; five daughters, Mrs. W. F. Dreyfuss, Tucson, Ariz; Mrs. H. P. Canode, Amarillo, and Mrs. Gene Seng and Misses Edna and Ethel Nelson, all of San Antonio; four sons, T. C. Nelson Jr., and Robert E. Nelson of Los Angels, Calif., and George P. and Clarence Nelson of San Antonio, and one sister, Mrs. M. H. Clayter of Los Angeles, Cal.
