NEWSPAPER ARTICLE: Mrs. S. W. Maxey is quite ill with pneumonia and at her advanced age, small hopes are entertained for her recovery. [Minerva died by the end of the day].
The Ellensburg Dawn, January 25, 1902
OBIT: Mrs. Minerva T. Whittenburg Maxey died at her home in this city last Saturday morning at 6 o'clock. She was born in Blount County, Tennessee on March 26, 1838, and in early life moved with her parents to Washington County, Illinois.
     She was married to S. W. Maxey, December 27, 1855 and in 1882 emigrated with her family to Ellensburg where she lived until her death. She was the mother of seven children, four of whom are still living: B. A. and W. C. and Miss F. D. Maxey and Mrs. George D. Hoague.
     She was converted and united with the Methodist Church in 1853 and in 1883 became a member of the first Methodist Society ever organized in the town of Ellensburg. Three of the eight original members still live, these being her husband and two daughters. She was always a consistent Christian, a faithful wife, a devoted mother, a kind neighbor, and a true friend, always approving the the wright and spurning the wrong.

OBIT: Simeon Walker Maxey died at his home, 411 North Sampson and Fifth Street, Saturday, September 11 at 6 a.m., after an illness of several months. Age 77 years, 1 month, and 2 days. The funeral took place from the M. E. Church, Sunday at 11 a.m.
     Mr. Maxey was born in Jefferson County, Illinois, August 9, 1832. In 1882 he and his family moved to this valley and for some years lived on a farm. He built two brick blocks in this city--the one now used by the Ellensburg steam laundry and the other being the IOOF Building.
     In 1893 he was appointed by Gov. McGraw as superintendent of the state fruit exhibit at the World's Fair held in Chicago. For many years he held the position of county fruit inspector. He was one of the most enthusiastic horticulturists in Kittitas County.
     He relisted in the Civil War in the 110th Volunteer Infantry of Illinois in 1862 and was assigned of the 14th Army Corps. He took part in the battles of Stone River, Chickamanga, Missionary Ridge and Atlanta and was engaged in one of the last battles of the war--Bentonville, NC and was mustered out in Washington, DC., and discharged in Chicago in 1865.
     Mr. Maxey was first married in Richview, Illinois to Miss Minervia T. Whittenberg who died January 25, 1902. To this union five children were born, three sons and two daughters: Brorahtus A., born January 17, 1859; Mortan M., born July 4, 1860; and died September 24, 1897 in this valley; Franceska D., born January 16, 1862; William C., born April 18, 1863; and Sina, born October 15, 1866.
     Mr. Maxey was a member of David Ford Post GAR and the M. E. Church. He was universally honored and esteemed by all who knew him and perhaps had as few enemies (if any at all) as any person living in this city. He was kind, considerate, courteous and will all a most useful citizen. He performed a good work and his labor liveth after him. Peace to his ashes.
