     Reference: Per Young [2011:1149-50]:
"William C Young [Y3a], son of Joseph Young and Sarah _____, was born about 1809 in TN, likely Maury or Giles Co very soon after his parents arrived from SC, William was called William Young Sr since he had a younger cousin of the same name (William Young [Y4g], born in 1817) who lived in the same neighborhood in the 1830s. About 1831 William married Elizabeth Kennedy; William's sister Nancy Young [Y3b] married William Kennedy about 1824, son of John Kennedy and Sarah Britton. There is yet no evidence that Nancy's husband was a brother of Elizabeth Kennedy. The family bible passed down by William's son John listed William's wife's name as Elizabeth Kennedy. Elizabeth was born in 1814 in TN, and was alive in 1880 in Giles Co living with her daughter Elizabeth. Her father was from VA, and mother from NC. In 1835 William was living along Bradshaw Creek, for he sold 137 acres there in February of that year. This was land two doors from John Archibald Young [Y1], and next door to John Abernathy. In 1840 William lived next door to Nancy Paxton, the widow of William's cousin Nathaniel Young [Y1a], and next to Nathaniel's brother Archibald Smith Young [Y1j]. In August 1844 "William Young Sr" sold a 65 acre tract on Bradshaw Creek to Hardin Griggs. This was the southeast corner of William's father's land which was deeded to William. These land transactions over the years show that William and his wife Elizabeth spent most of their lives at Beech Hill, where he was a farmer. In 1855 William was named to be the executor in the will of Sterling Huff, father of Rebecca Huff.
"Soon after 25 April 1865 William died. Giles Co Chancery Court Woodruff files M through N, 1830-1900, Case 2975, shows that in 1871 Wesley R Moore of Giles Co sued Joseph & Alfred A Young, Executors of William C Young, deceased over unpaid debts William C owed Mr Moore. In this suit, people named were Elizabeth Young, James C Burgess & wife Margaret, John Clark & wife Amanda, John Rea & wife Mary Irene, John A Young, Lizzie Moore, and Sallie Finley, all of Giles County, A R Moore & wife Nance E in TX, L B Erwin & wife Martha Ann in IL, William B Chiles & wife Eliza of Marshall Co TN, defendants and widow and children of William Young, deceased. William’s land and personal property were sold for payment of debts. The land was sold under orders of Chancery Court. Also, in 1886, J C Rea & wife vs Joseph Young, Complainants, stated that William
Young died in Giles County during the year 1865, testate, leaving his widow Elizabeth and his children, to wit: Mary J, wife of J C Rea; Martha A, wife of L B Erwin; Nancy E, wife of A R Moore; Margaret K, wife of J C Burgess; Elizabeth or Eliza, wife of W B Chiles; Amanda, wife of John Clark (T J Clark & wife Lizzie, and Sarah, wife of John Lemmons, the last two being grandchildren); Joseph Young; Alfred A Young; and John Young, sons of William Young, deceased. Elizabeth, widow of testator, died in 1885, Joseph and Alfred A Young qualified as executors of her will. By the will of testator, she intended for his children to share equally in his estate. William Young was the owner of 330 acres of land in the 10th District on the waters of Bradshaw Creek. 200 acres was sold at the death of Mr. Young, 130 acres remained to be sold at the death of widow Elizabeth Young. The land was sold to W M Bradford and W T Holly, under orders of Chancery Court. Mary J Rea and her husband J C Rea lived in Van Zandt Co TX. Martha A wife of L B Erwin, died in Van Zandt Co TX on 8 September 1888. Martha A left one son David, who was then thirty five years of age. L B Erwin was living in Red River Co TX in 1891. Lizzie Rea, who married first T J Clark, married second C W Edgerton of Van Zandt Co on March 12, 1889. A R and Amanda were residing in Red River Co TX in 1891.Graves for William C and Elizabeth have not been found, but may be on his farm if not in the Beech Hill or Bradshaw Cemeteries. They had twelve children:
1. Martha Ann Young, b 1833
2. Joseph S Young, b 1835
3. Sarah Young, b 11 Mar 1837
4. Alfred Asbury Young, b 1839

In 1870 widow Elizabeth (Kennedy) Young’s granddaughter Sallie Finley [Y3a3a] lived with her and two of her children in District 10, Giles Co. In 1880 Sallie lived with her aunt Elizabeth Young [Y3a12], William C’s youngest daughter. (58,FG, VS,LL, 15iknqrswyz)" at Citation.6

Elizabeth Kennedy and William C. Young appeared in the census of 1840 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA; I believe this is William C. YOUNG, husband of Elizabeth KENNEDY. Her father died before 1840, but they are living two household from a James Kennedy who could be an in-law

"Margaret K Young [Y3a8], daughter of William C Young and Elizabeth Kennedy, was born 11 April 1846 in Giles Co TN. By September 1865 she had married James C Burgess, and in 1900 was a widow living in District 17 in Giles Co. James C was born in Giles Co on 21 October 1843, son of Henry K Burgess (born 1811 in VA) and Rachael Wilson (born 1816 in TN). Margaret, as Mrs M K Burgess, lived with her daughter Kate in District 17 in 1910, and widow Margaret lived with her widowed daughter Virginia in District 17 in 1920. Margaret was probably the "Mrs J C Burgess" who was buried in Brick Church Cemetery in Giles Co. Margaret’s birth date, per the 1900 census, was in April 1847; the birth and death dates on Mrs J C Burgess’ gravestone are 11 Apr 1846-15 Sep 1922. This must be Margaret. There are about twenty-one recognizable Burgess graves in this Cemetery; Brick Church is in civil District 17 of Giles Co, about midway between Pulaski and Cornersville, and is in the area where Margaret lived her whole married life and where her children were born and grew up. Buried next to Margaret is the grave of James C Burgess, with gravestone dates of 21 Oct 1843 - 31 May 1900. She and James had ten children, with seven still alive in 1900 and 1910. All were born in civil District 17 of Giles Co TN

Census 1900 Oklahoma, indicates both his parents were born in Tennessee. It also indicated he had had 11 children with five still alive. The census indicated the parents and children could all read and write.
Source: Memories of Berlin Oklahoma, Burch Printing, Elk City, Oklahoma, 1977.
(Note by RCL - 1900 census inicates that Myrtle and Roy were born in Texas in 1881 and 1890 and James was born in Oklahoma in 1893. Therefore, the following story is slightly in error.)
John and Mollie Young came to Oklahoma from Tennessee in a covered wagon about 1900. When they got this far they filed and homesteaded on a one hundred and sixty acre farm three miles west of what is called Berlin now, and a mile south.
They were raised by slaves in Tennessee.
They built a half dugout to live in until they could do better. It was half on top and half of the bottom was under ground.
The deed papers were made up at Mangum, Oklahoma. The land was deeded by President Theodore Roosevelt and signed by F.M. McKean at Mangum, Oklahoma, secretary, to John A. Young on February 28, 1906.
The deed then was recoreded and dated March 4, 1911 at 3:00 p.m.
After getting settled, they built corrals for two cows and three mules.
Rollie and Charlie, being the oldest boys, went to Texas on their horses to work for six months.
The Indians turned the cattle out; the mules taken up with the wild horses. They had to get Rollie and Charlie back with their horses to get their own horses back.
They lived in this half dugout until 1915 when they had prospered enough to build a box house, made of one by twelve inch boards. It was a two room house with two shed rooms on one side and a porch on the other side.
The house was finished on the inside of the flat one by twelves with cheesecloth and paper. The lumber to build the house was hauled from El Reno to the farm in a wagon with a team.
John A. Young, Sr. bought five acres at Berlin from John B. Barnes and homesteaded there in about 1918.
The farm was rented out until 1930 when a grandson, Roy Young Jr., moved on it and rented it until 1950. Then Roy Young, Jr. bought the farm, one hundred sixty acres in 1960, and the place has never been out of the family name. Roy Young, Jr. still farms it. (In 1977)
(Note by RCL: Roy Alonzo Young was not a junior, his father was Roy Barton Young.)
Roy Young, Jr. tore down the old box house and built a little new four room house on it.
The Young Families of Early Giles County, Tennessee has the following:
John Archie Young [Y3a10], son of William C. Young, was born in November 1849 at Bradshaw. In September 1865 he was unmarried and was living in Giles County. Later he married and a great-grandson was living at Chanute, Oklahoma in 1985. (DM,15nqwr)

Martha Ann Young was born circa 1833 at Bradshaw, Tennessee, USA; Aged 17 in 1850 census.1,3 She married Lucian Baird Erwin in 1854 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA.3

Martha Ann Young died on 8 September 1888 at Van Zandt Co., Texas, USA.3
     Reference: Per Young [2011:1053]:
"Martha Ann Young [Y3a1], daughter of William C Young and Elizabeth Kennedy, was born about 1833 at Bradshaw in Giles Co TN (age 39 in 1880). She married Lucian Baird Erwin about 1854, probably in Giles Co since they both lived there in 1850. He was a saddle maker, born in Giles Co in 1830, and son of David Erwin and Mary Baird. In 1850 Lucian and his family lived in District 10 (1850 census showed Lucian and family as Irwin; 1840 they were Erwin). In 1860, now married to Martha, Lucian was age 30 and lived near Lynnville, Giles Co. Martha was age 27, daughter Mary E was 5, David was 4, Malissa was age 3, and William was age 1. In 1870 they were at Grand Tower, Jackson Co IL (under the spelling Irwin). Lucian was the head of the home, his wife was Jane (not Martha), but the names of the children were the same as in Giles Co in 1860. Everyone was born in TN. Ages of this IL family were 40 for Lucian (born 1830), 39 for Jane (born 1841), daughter Mary was 16; son David was 13; daughter Malissa was age 10, and Wm was age 8. In Dallas Co TX in 1880, Lucian B was age 49, his wife Martha was age 39, son David was age 24, and living next door was William Erwin, age 31, and William’s sister Mollie was age 16. Because of the ages of this family, William and Mollie must have been a nephew and niece, not Lucian’s and Martha’s children. Daughter Malissa must have married or died in the 1860s. Martha died in Van Zandt Co TX on 8 September 1888, They had four children
a. Mary E Erwin, b 1855
b. David A Erwin, b Nov 1855
c. Malissa Erwin, b 1857
d. William Erwin, b 1859

"David Erwin, father of Lucian, was age 40s in 1830 Giles in Co; age 40s again in 1840 Giles Co census; age 58 in 1850 Giles Co census, born in SC. His wife Mary was age 30s in 1830 Giles Co; 40s in 1840 and age 57 in 1850, born Abbeville, SC. The 1850 census showed Lucian and family as Irwin with an I instead of an E; in 1830 and 1840 they were Erwin. In 1840 their next door neighbors were David Erwin’s father John Erwin (age 80s), and Joseph Young (age 60s). David Erwin and wife Mary had a large family. Most or all children were born in Giles Co: James, Robert Woods, Elizabeth, William, David, Mary A, Joab, Matthew Alexander, Milton L, Lucian B, Pauline B, and John Erwin. (W,15jknqy, 293r, 56s)" at Citation.3

Martha Ann Young was listed as a resident in William C. Young and Elizabeth Kennedy's household in the census report in 1840 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA; I believe this is William C. YOUNG, husband of Elizabeth KENNEDY. Her father died before 1840, but they are living two household from a James Kennedy who could be an in-law

Joseph died 16 December 1906 at Seymour, Baylor Co TX and was buried in the Old Seymour Cemetery; Rebecca died at Megargel on 15 October 1919 and was buried in Megargel Cemetery, Archer Co.      Archibald Smith Young was born in 1816 at Beech Hill, Giles Co., Tennessee, USA.2 He married Louisa Catherine Abernathy, daughter of John Calvin Abernathy and Catherine Tarpley, on 26 June 1836 at Pulaski, Giles Co., Tennessee, USA.1,2
Archibald Smith Young married Nancy S. Mendoza Oliver on 20 June 1858 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA,
;
His 2nd wife; her 2nd husband.2
Archibald Smith Young died on 14 March 1862 at Bradshaw, Giles Co., Tennessee, USA.2
He was a mentioned with John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith at Citation; Young [2011:1015-17]:
"John Archibald Young [Y1], son of Nathaniel Young and Patty Crawford of the future Spartanburg Co SC, was born in 1774 in the area along the intersection of James Creek and Tyger River. His father died when John was but a boy of about 9, leaving John, his three or four brothers, possibly two sisters, and his mother Patty. In 1790 the family was living in the part of the County where the Tyger River crosses the Spartanburg-Union Co line. They lived in the James Creek-Tyger River neighborhood close to Nathaniel's brother Richard Young. As time went on, John owned land previously held by George Crawford, land next to his grandfather William Young's land. He married and had the first of his ten children there. His wife was Nancy Smith, one of many children of John Buckner Smith and Dianna _____ of nearby Dutchman's Creek. John and Nancy were members of Friendship Baptist Church of Spartanburg Co (a few miles north of James Creek). February 1792 deed records (Book F, Page 39) show that Buckner and Dianna sold a 127 acre plantation on Cain Creek near Tyger River to a Benjamin Grist, and in 1795 Buckner bought 126 acres along Dutchman's Creek, which was near the neighborhood of Richard and Nathaniel Young at James Creek. Therefore, John lived a short walk to Buckner's home for a few years prior to when he and Dianna were married.
"This couple belonged to the Tyger River Baptist Church (also called Friendship) at the turn of the 19th Century, as did many other local people who were later found in Giles Co TN. John and Nancy were probably married there about 1793. This pioneer church was located sixteen miles south east of the town of Spartanburg (about where the present town of Glenn Springs is today), and about five miles north of where John and Nancy had their home. In May 1801 John was "excluded for the sin of intemperence" (drinking or eating too much) by the church leaders. Nancy was born in 1776, so was about 17 at the time, a common age for a young woman to be married in those days.
"On 23 December 1808 John sold his small farm along James Creek to his brother-in-law Archibald Smith. This sale was witnessed by John Holley (probably the husband of John's niece Mary T Young [Y4a]) and by John's father-in-law Buckner Smith. Within a few weeks of this sale, John, Nancy, and their four sons and three daughters moved to Bradshaw Creek in eastern Giles Co TN. In March 1812 Archibald Smith sold the farm and also moved to the plush countryside of Giles Co living next door and east of John and Nancy; witnesses of this sale were Richard Young and William Young. Richard was John's uncle, and William was either a cousin or a brother. Although John and family arrived in Giles Co in early 1809, there is no record of him owning any land there until 22 February 1814 when he bought 171 acres along Bradshaw Creek from Samuel Polk of Maury Co. And in October 1816 John bought 100 acres along the headwaters of Bradshaw Creek, from Polk, land next to the first purchase. This is today at Beech Hill; the "headwaters of Bradshaw Creek," called Little Bradshaw Creek today, runs just west of the home he build there about 1816 or 1817. A witness of the first deed was Nathaniel Young, and the second deed was witnessed by John Young [Y1b], son of John and Nancy. Because John's brother Nathaniel was living nearby in Maury Co, it is not known whether witness Nathaniel Young was John's son or brother.
"In 1819 Nancy died and was buried in Beech Hill Cemetery just up the hill and west of their home (which was built soon after 1816, and was still occupied in 2010). Her gravestone said "Consort Of John Young." John then married Mrs Nancy ____ Buchanan, who already had a daughter, Mrs Frances T Craven, wife of John Craven. John and Nancy were members of the United Baptist Church of Christ in Giles Co. For at least 15 years prior to his death on 17 October 1838, John was a local Justice of the peace. He was buried in Beech Hill Cemetery next to Nancy Smith.
"In these early years, it was quite common to have children spaced 2 and 3 years apart. In the 1820 census, in John's home, the males were: one son under age 10 (Archibald), one son age 16-18 (Spencer), two sons age 16-25 (Buckner and William), and John, age 45 or older. Sons Nathaniel and John Jr had already married and left home. In 1830 in John's home t he r e wa s one ma l e age 5-9 (grandson William A Young, son of John's late son John Jr), one male age 15-19 (Archibald), and John, age 50-59. Missing in the neighborhood were son's Nathaniel (died in the 1820s), John Jr (died in the 1820s), and William Young (recently married, and was perhaps living with his in-laws). Son Spencer was married and lived next door to John; son Buckner was married and lived in the same area, but quite a few doors away. In 1840 in Nancy Young's home (John's widow), there were no sons. Living next door to Nancy was son Archibald (age 20-29) and son William (age 30-39). Sons Buckner and Spencer each lived in their own homes in Giles Co, closer to each other than they were to Archibald and William. John A Young and Nancy Smith had at least eleven children:
a. Nathaniel Young, b c1794
b. John Young Jr, b 1795
c. Buckner K Young, b 1799
d. William Young, b abt 1801

"The Tyger River Baptist Church (also called Friendship Baptist Church) was closely affiliated with Boiling Spring Baptist Church, which was in Union Co close to the home of Major Thomas Young. Families of the Tyger River Church from 1801 to 1804 who were also found in TN counties within a few years were: Beard, Golightly, Meadows, Moore, Smith, Willeford, Willis, and Young (John and wife Nancy Smith).
"Buckner Smith, John's father-in-law, and Buckner's wife Diana probably moved to Bradshaw with their son Archibald Smith about 1812, from Dinwiddie Co VA. The 1789 personal property tax list of Dinwiddie shows Archibald Smith and Millington Smith, and other Smith families. In 1790 Millington was living near John Young's uncles Richard and Thomas Young, and near John's mother, in Spartanburg Co SC.
"A Charles Moore, a pioneer of Scotch-Irish descent, moved to Spartanburg Co from PA about 1763 and built his log home 8 miles southeast of the present town of Spartanburg. It would be reasonable to assume that this Charles Moore was the ancestor of most, if not all of the Moores of Spartanburg Co into the early 19th Century. Reference: Per Young [2011:924]:
"Archibald Smith Young [Y1j], son of John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith, was born in 1816 at Beech Hill in Giles Co. He lived close to Beech Hill through 1850, but by 1860 had moved closer to the Pulaski area. On 29 June 1836 he married Louisa Catherine Abernathy at Pulaski. She was born in the east side of Giles Co on 12 January 1816, daughter of John Abernathy (he a son of William Abernathy, a Revolutionary War patriot) and Catherine Tarpley. John Abernathy's farm was the third farm south of Archibald's father's farm. With the birth of her eleventh child, Louisa died on 15 February 1858 in Giles Co. "Mrs L Young / Consort Of / A S Young" was buried in Beech Hill Cemetery. Within a few months Arch took a second wife, on 20 June 1858; she was Nancy Mendoza S Oliver, widow of Felix G McKnight. Mendoza was born in Giles Co on 9 January 1826, daughter of Major Ananias Oliver and Nancy Featherstone Harwell, and died 18 February 1892 in Giles Co. Arch was wealthy, and with wealth there are usually enemies. He was murdered by Colmore B Sutton, his neighbor to the north and east of Arch's farm, on 14 March 1862 at Bradshaw over an argument about a fence or a fence line. The 1869 Giles Co court records state that the charge was First Degree murder, but the authorities discontinued their pursuit of Colmore Sutton and John McCanless since "the defendants have gone to parts unknown and have not been heard from in several years." What part in the murder John McCanless had is not known, but the motive may have had something to do with family ties: John McCanless was the husband of Arch's sister Dianna Young [Y1g]; possibly the reason that John was an accomplice in the murder of Arch was because of a sour marriage between John and Dianna, in which Arch may have sided with Dianna. See the biography of Nancy Young [Y3b].
"Arch was a farmer and owned much land; upon his death, his estate came to about 1,100 acres. In 1860 he owned $33,000 worth of real estate. Years prior, his father had given other land to Arch's older brothers, but at that time Arch was still too young to receive a gift of land from his father. When Arch's father died, Arch then received his inheritance through his father's estate. Of all the sons of John Young, Arch was the only one to keep his land; the other brothers lost their property through bad investments, or through early death.
"The administrator of Arch's estate was Henry Houze, who was the husband of Arch's first cousin, Sarah A "Sissie" Smith, through Arch's mother's side of the family. Some of Arch's younger children moved in with their eldest sister Ann Eliza Young and her husband William David Smith, in Lincoln Co (there is no known relation between William David Smith and the other Smiths named here). Arch's burial place has not been found, but would likely be Beech Hill Cemetery; Louisa was buried there. Arch's widow Mendoza later married Marin Marks. Arch's thirteen children were:
1. Ann Eliza Young, b 11 Apr 1837
2. John Crutcher Young, b 5 Jun 1839
3. Nathaniel Abernathy Young, b 14 Apr 1841
4. Napoleon Bonapart Young, b 19 Aug 1843
5. Sarah Frances Young, b 6 Sep 1845
6. Mary Jane Young, b 6 Sep 1845
7. Louisa Catherine Young, b 27 Jul 1848
8. Adella Campbell Young, b 19 Feb 1851

10. Charles Abernathy Young, b 14 Apr 1855
11. Martha Minerva Young, b 15 Feb 1858
12. Nancy Mendoza Young, b 6 Nov 1859
13. Archibald Oliver Young, b 21 Aug 1862

"Colmore B Sutton's wife was Sarah Catherine Harwell, daughter of Robert McNairy Harwell and Parthenia P Smith. After Colmore deserted his wife and daughter Jeffie Sutton following the murder of Arch, Sarah married a widower named Zachariah Smith in 1879. Zack was the son of Robert Smith, Arch's first cousin and the father of Henry Houze's wife Sissie Smith.
"Felix G McKnight was born 20 Sep 1819, and died 2 Feb 1852; he was buried in the Oliver family Cemetery in Giles Co. (58,L,MA,VS, GW,NY, GE,16r, 15knqprswyzc, 17c)." at Citation.2

Archibald Smith Young was listed as a resident in John Archibald Young's household in the census report in 1830 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA; There are two "Jno" YOUNGs in the 1830 census. John #1 (on p. 209) is next to Spencer and probably is Spencer's father. John #2 is on p. 141, but the adults are too young to be John Archibald, the father of the brothers Spencer and John, and the children are younger than the known children of John Archibald and Nancy (Smith) YOUNG. However, incorrect ages in early census enumerations were not uncommon. Nancy (SMITH) YOUNG apparently died in 1819, so the older woman in the 1830 census enumeration of John #1, may have been a second wife, since he had several young children at the time of his 1st wife's death.

She was a mentioned with Archibald Smith Young at Citation; Per Young [2011:924]:

(58,L,MA,VS, GW,NY, GE,16r, 15knqprswyzc, 17c)."2

"Ann Elizabeth Young [Y3a9], daughter of William C Young and Elizabeth Kennedy, was born 30 November 1846 in Giles Co TN and grew up there. She normally used the name Eliza or Ann Eliza. She married William Buckner Chiles in Giles Co on 29 October 1865; the name was spelled "Childs" in the marriage record, but on Ann’s gravestone and most census records, it was "Chiles." This couple lived near Lewisburg, Marshall Co in 1870, and in 1880 were back in Giles Co in District 10, then in 1891 lived in Marshall Co; she was age 23 in 1870, and age 33 in 1880. Eliza and William moved to Ellis Co TX by about 1889, as did so many Giles Co people. In 1910 William and Eliza lived at Lancaster, Dallas Co.
"William B served with the ill-fated 3rd Tennessee Infantry CSA during the Civil War, with two brothers and a number of cousins, including several Youngs. His older brother, Thomas Chiles, died in September 1861 of disease in camp before battle was met; Their father, Paul Chiles Jr, died in October 1861. The 3rd Tennessee Infantry included Sam Watkins, who served in the Maury Grays. William Chiles’ unit began with 885 men in 1861; 18 men remained to be paroled in NC in 1865.
"William was born 30 November 1840 in Giles Co, son of Paul Chiles and Sarah Collins, and died at Lancaster, Dallas Co TX on 23 June 1914, age 73.
