Archibald Smith "Archie" Young was listed as a resident in Spencer Young and Manerva Lanentine Abernathy's household in the census report on 28 July 1860 at Northern Subdivision, Giles Co., Tennessee, USA; Spencer is next to am unidentified younger William A. YOUNG (aged 31, born ca 1829). I have no record of Spencer having a son named William, and his brother William would have been 59 by this time.

Nancy (?)1
F, #97837, b. between 1771 and 1780
Last Edited | 9 Apr 2022 |
Nancy (?) married (?) Wilkerson
;
Her 1st husband.1 Nancy (?) was born between 1771 and 1780; Age of oldest woman listed on the 1840 census in John's household.2 She married John Archibald Young, son of Capt. Nathaniel (I) Young and Patty Crawford, after 1819
;
His 2nd wife; her 2nd husband.2,1
Nancy (?) and John Archibald Young appeared in the census of 7 August 1820 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA; On the same page as his brother, Nathaniel Young (line 32), his brother Joseph (line 44), and an unknown young Rufus (line 33).

Nancy (?) appeared on the census of 1830 in the household of John Archibald Young at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA; There are two "Jno" YOUNGs in the 1830 census. John #1 (on p. 209) is next to Spencer and probably is Spencer's father. John #2 is on p. 141, but the adults are too young to be John Archibald, the father of the brothers Spencer and John, and the children are younger than the known children of John Archibald and Nancy (Smith) YOUNG. However, incorrect ages in early census enumerations were not uncommon. Nancy (SMITH) YOUNG apparently died in 1819, so the older woman in the 1830 census enumeration of John #1, may have been a second wife, since he had several young children at the time of his 1st wife's death.

Nancy (?) appeared in the census of 1840 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA; There is an A. YOUNG, a Nancy YOUNG, and a Wm YOUNG, side by side on the same page of the 1840 census. A. and Wm. are probably Archibald Smith YOUNG and his brother William. Young [2011:946] reports that this Nancy is the 2nd wife of John Archibald Young and the step-mother of Archibald and William. Apparently her step-daughter, Dianna was living with her at the time.

Wylie "Willie" Willis Willeford was buried after 2 May 1871 at Beech Hill Cemetery, Giles Co., Tennessee, USA; From Find A Grave:
Reference: Young [2011:1052]: "Martha Young [Y1i], daughter of John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith, was born 29 January 1812 at Beech Hill in eastern Giles Co. She married her second cousin Wylie Willis Willeford [Y6b] about 1832. Her line is continued under his name."
Young [2011:876-7]:
"Wylie Willis Willeford [Y6b], son of Mary Young and Willis Wylie Willeford, was born 15 December 1807 in Spartanburg Co SC. He was called Willi and Willie, and moved to Maury Co TN when he was about 10 or 12 years old, and probably moved south to Giles Co by 1825 when his father bought 87 and three-quarter acres there from John English, husband of Willis' sister Clarimond [Y6c]. Willis' parents moved to Calloway Co KY by 1830, for in that year Willis (husband of Polly Young) was on the Calloway Co tax list, and he was not found on any neighboring 1830 TN census. (Willis' parents died in Calloway Co where they had lived for years.) Young Willis probably also moved to Calloway Co but his ties were now back in Giles Co; he married his second cousin Martha Young [Y1i], daughter of John Young and Nancy Smith, about 1832. Martha was born 29 January 1812 at Beech Hill in Giles Co where she lived until she married Willis. The newly married couple may have spent their first few years in Calloway Co KY or in Henry Co TN, for their eldest child reported his birth place as KY in the 1860 census, although all other census records show that he was born in TN. In 1840 Willis and Martha were in Giles Co where they lived from then on. He was a farmer in district 11 and died there on 2 May 1871; Willis Worley was appointed as the administrator of his estate on May 3. Martha died on 18 December 1877 and was buried in Beach Hill Cemetery with Willie. They had nine known children:
"There were other Willeford men of very similar names, thus causing much confusion in researching their histories. Britton Willeford (born in 1742 in VA, Spartanburg Co SC sheriff in 1799) and his wife Lucy Lancaster (born in 1742 in NC), the grandparents of the above Wylie Willis Willeford [Y6b], had twin sons, one was named Willis Wylie and the other was named Wylie Willis; both were born 14 June 1773 and it was Willis who was the father of Wylie W Willeford [Y6b] above. The twins lived in Maury Co in 1820. The uncle, Wylie, had a son, first cousin to Wylie W Willeford [Y6b], who was named Willis Wylie Willeford. The cousin Willis married was Rebecca Row in Henry Co TN in 1839 and they had many children; one was named Wiley Willis Willeford, born in 1846. And Richard Young Willeford [Y6g], uncle of Wylie W Willeford [Y6b], had a son named Willis W Willeford [Y6g7], born in 1867. Other children of Britton Willeford who lived in Maury, Giles, and Henry Counties and in Calloway Co KY were: William L Willeford of Maury Co (born in 1782 in Spartanburg Co SC) and Hardy of Giles and Lawrence Counties (born in Spartanburg Co 18 Jan 1785, died in Lawrence Co 9 Jul 1869 and was buried there in Mt Ararat Cemetery). All Willeford families of these counties of TN and KY descend from Britton Willeford and Lucy Lancaster. (74, 75,JE, NY, 78, 1h,15yknqrp, 22c.)5

James Wiley Willeford was buried on 11 May 1925 at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Sachse, Dallas Co., Texas, USA; From Find A Grave:
BIRTH 9 Sep 1849, Tennessee, USA
DEATH 10 May 1925 (aged 75), Liberty Grove, Dallas County, Texas, USA
James and his wife, natives of Tennessee, traveled by covered wagon from Giles County to Texas in the early 1890s. James' working abilities were limited as the result of losing an arm in a threshing machine accident and his wife was in ill health much of the time. He provided for the family by raising and selling vegetables to nearby neighbors and stores in the surrounding communities. The area doctor advised Emma to relocate to Arkansas for health reasons and the family moved, by covered wagon, to Prescott, Arkansas in 1905. Frequent stops were made along the way in order to earn money for food. The Willeford family returned to Texas around 1910. They arrived at the depot in Wylie onboard a train pulled by a big steam powered locomotive engine. Dallas Gateway: Dallas County Pioneers

Willis Wylie Willeford1
M, #97849, b. 14 June 1773, d. 6 June 1854
Last Edited | 13 Apr 2022 |
Willis Wylie Willeford was born on 14 June 1773 at Warren Co., North Carolina, USA.2 He married Mary "Polly" Young, daughter of Capt. Richard Young and Isobel Crawford?, circa 1805 at Friendship Baptist Church, Spartanburg Co., South Carolina, USA.1,2
Willis Wylie Willeford died on 6 June 1854 at Calloway Co., Kentucky, USA, at age 80.2
Willis Wylie Willeford was buried after 6 July 1854 at Green Plains Cemetery, Hazel, Calloway Co., Kentucky, USA.2,3
Reference: Per Young [2011:1059]:
"Mary "Polly" Young [Y6] (also [y1e1]), daughter of Richard Young [y1e] and Isobel ____, was born about 1786 in Spartanburg Co SC. She married Willis Wylie Willeford about 1805, probably at Friendship Baptist Church in Spartanburg Co. Willis was born in Warren Co NC on 14 June 1773, son of Britton Willeford and Lucy Lancaster. "Willey Williford" was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in October 1802. In 1810 Polly and Willis were living next door to her father in the Tyger River-James Creek community. They moved to Columbia, TN prior to 1820, but after 1814. In 1806, 1810, and 1814 Willis managed a voting site in Spartanburg Co but is found living at Columbia, TN in 1820 between men who were known to live in and own businesses at Columbia years prior to and after 1820 (Jeremiah Cherry and Pleasant Nelson).
"Polly and Willis moved west to Calloway Co KY, settling at the southern edge of the county next to Henry Co TN, probably after February 1825; soon prior to then Willis bought land in Giles Co from John English, the husband of their daughter Clarimond. Willis is listed on a Calloway Co tax list in 1833. Polly and Willis kept the family ties with their close relatives back in Maury and Giles Counties because news of the Henry and Calloway Co cousins was sometimes in the Pulaski newspapers. Polly died about 1845, and Willis on 6 June 1854 at age 82 in Calloway Co of "conjestion of liver and relaps." He was buried in Green Plain Cemetery near Hazel, KY. His death record shows his parents as "Lucy & Britton Williford" and also says he was a resident of Calloway Co and was born in SC. They had seven children:
"Willis' twin brother Wylie Willis Willeford lived a short walk across the KY state line in Henry Co TN. And another brother, William Lancaster Willeford, lived and taught school for years in Maury Co and younger brother Hardy Willeford lived for years in Giles Co beginning from about 1815. Researching these families is difficult: Willis and Wylie each had the other brother's names, but in reverse order; each of these twin brothers had a son named after the twin uncle; and William L and Willis both had a daughter named Lucy Lancaster Willeford. See the Willeford information following the biography of Wylie Willis Willeford [Y6b]. There are many Willeford and allied names of the generation of Polly's children on the Green Plains Church roster at Paris, TN, dating from 1854. (53,55, 58,59, 91,NY, JE,10iz, 1aeh, 15y, 28nwd)." at Citation.2

Mary "Polly" Young was born circa 1786 at Spartanburg Co., South Carolina, USA.3 She married Willis Wylie Willeford circa 1805 at Friendship Baptist Church, Spartanburg Co., South Carolina, USA.1,4
Mary "Polly" Young died circa 1845.4
She was a mentioned with Capt. Richard Young and Isobel Crawford? at Citation; Per Young [2011:1101-02]:
"Richard Young [y1e], son of William Young Senr and an unknown mother, was born about 1755 and was named in his father's 31 March 1787 will. (Refer to the information given under Richard's brothers Thomas and William.) By the late 1770s Richard may have married since he was shown in the 1790 census with two females in the household. If so, there is no hard evidence that there were any children from this marriage. The extra people in Richard's house could have just as likely been some of the children of his late brother Nathaniel, one nephew being William. About 1783 Richard married Isobel _____ (Crawford? See the Crawford story following Nathaniel Young, son of William Young Senr). Any information on the first wife, if there was one, has not been found. Isobel was born about 1771. There was a Richard Young who served in the Continental Militia under Colonel Brandon after the fall of Charleston in 1780. Since Richard was the only Young with that name in Colonel Brandon's area of command, he must by our subject. On a deed dated 27 April 1795 Richard witnessed a purchase of two tracts on Dutchman Creek north of Tyger River by Buckner Smith from Jesse Christian and wife Rachael. On a 24 February 1809 deed Richard's wife Isobel was named when he sold 50 acres to Reuben Newman, land on the south side of and bordering the Tyger River, and "being part of a tract of land granted to Benjamin Wofford," land next to that already owned by Newman; witnesses were William Young (a nephew?, son of his brother Nathaniel?) and Willis Willeford (Richard's son-inlaw). On 17 March 1812 Richard (and William) again were witnesses, this time for the sale of 66 acres on James Creek from Archibald Smith to Isael Beeson. And on 14 September 1815 Richard and Isobel gave to their "beloved son-in-law Willis Willeford and our daughter Polly Willeford his wife" 100 acres, "being part of two tracts of land one granted to Benjamin Wofford and the other to Joshua Smith lying on the south side of Tyger River" near Anthony Shand's field; witnesses were William Young and Thomas Young. Part of this land was purchased from Owen Forester in 1796.
"These land deed records can leave no doubt as to where in Spartanburg Co Richard lived. The distance from where James Creek and Tyger River meet, and moving northeast to Dutchman Creek, is no more than five miles on horseback. In 1790 Richard was living two doors from Patty, the widow of his brother Nathaniel, and four doors from his brother Thomas; Reuben Newman lived three doors on the other side of Nathaniel's widow.
"Richard died in Spartanburg Co on 14 November 1837 leaving a large estate and over two dozen slaves, and a will dated 29 April 1834. In the will he gave to "my Son William Anthony Young all my Estate Both Real and personal Expting Henry & Nelly" and gave to "my oldest Son Thomas Young my servant henry." He also gave to his "Daughter Polley Welleford my servant Nelly." Son William A Young was named as executor. The will was quite short, and there were no implications that there may have been a first wife or other children. The death date is known from a paper dated 5 December 1837 written by his son William A Young to a Mr Bomer in which William says "I want you to send me sitatons By the Boy my farther died one fourteenth of November Last which I am Left to manage the fares". etc.
"Richard served on the American side in the War of Independence in Colonel Brandon's Regiment. Since it was the policy of the new U.S. government to repay its soldiers for their service in the defense of the Continental side in the War by granting the veterans government land, or by granting them escheat ed l and ( l and t aken from the British
sympathizers), Richard may have obtained much of his land holdings in this manner. His neighbor Reuben Newman was an appraiser for the estate, and son William was the administrator. Richard had three probable children:
"Archibald Smith was a son of the above John Buckner Smith and a brother of Nancy Smith who married Richard's nephew John Archibald Young [Y1]. Arch bought the 66 acres from John Young on 23 December 1808 just before John and his family moved to Giles Co TN. The James Creek land in that sale was described as being "at the north west corner of a tract of two hundred acres originally granted to George Crawford." The 1808 deed was witnessed by John Holley and Buckner Smith. Neither Smith men could sign their names. Soon after Arch sold the 66 acres in March 1812, he moved to Giles Co settling on land just north of and bordering John Young. (JE, NY, 1waehizpy)
