     Reference: Per Young [2011:1030]:
"Joseph S Young [Y3a2], son of William C Young and Elizabeth Kennedy, was born 23 June 1835 at Pulaski, TN. On 4 November 1852, at the age of 17, he married Rebecca Huff in Giles Co. She was born at Pulaski on 14 March 1837, daughter of Sterling Huff and Susan Jones. Joseph was a farmer. During the Civil War he was a Confederate Captain. He entered the Confederate Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company F, 32nd Tenn Infantry. Joseph spent four years in the infantry, in and out of POW camps only to desert a couple months before the end of the war.
"Joseph and Rebecca lived in Lincoln Co in 1870, then moved to TX with their children soon after 1870. Along the way, they stopped in Hardeman Co where a child was born. In 1880 they lived in Eastland Co TX with their five youngest children. Joseph died 16 December 1906 at Seymour, Baylor Co TX and was buried in the Old Seymour Cemetery; Rebecca died at Megargel on 15 October 1919 and was buried in Megargel Cemetery, Archer Co. They had eight children

Her 2rd Husband.1 Nancy S. Mendoza Oliver was born on 9 January 1826 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA.1 She married Archibald Smith Young, son of John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith, on 20 June 1858 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA,
;
His 2nd wife; her 2nd husband.1
Nancy S. Mendoza Oliver died on 18 February 1892 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA, at age 66.1
She was a witness to Per Young [2011:924]:
"Archibald Smith Young [Y1j], son of John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith, was born in 1816 at Beech Hill in Giles Co. He lived close to Beech Hill through 1850, but by 1860 had moved closer to the Pulaski area. On 29 June 1836 he married Louisa Catherine Abernathy at Pulaski. She was born in the east side of Giles Co on 12 January 1816, daughter of John Abernathy (he a son of William Abernathy, a Revolutionary War patriot) and Catherine Tarpley. John Abernathy's farm was the third farm south of Archibald's father's farm. With the birth of her eleventh child, Louisa died on 15 February 1858 in Giles Co. "Mrs L Young / Consort Of / A S Young" was buried in Beech Hill Cemetery. Within a few months Arch took a second wife, on 20 June 1858; she was Nancy Mendoza S Oliver, widow of Felix G McKnight. Mendoza was born in Giles Co on 9 January 1826, daughter of Major Ananias Oliver and Nancy Featherstone Harwell, and died 18 February 1892 in Giles Co. Arch was wealthy, and with wealth there are usually enemies. He was murdered by Colmore B Sutton, his neighbor to the north and east of Arch's farm, on 14 March 1862 at Bradshaw over an argument about a fence or a fence line. The 1869 Giles Co court records state that the charge was First Degree murder, but the authorities discontinued their pursuit of Colmore Sutton and John McCanless since "the defendants have gone to parts unknown and have not been heard from in several years." What part in the murder John McCanless had is not known, but the motive may have had something to do with family ties: John McCanless was the husband of Arch's sister Dianna Young [Y1g]; possibly the reason that John was an accomplice in the murder of Arch was because of a sour marriage between John and Dianna, in which Arch may have sided with Dianna. See the biography of Nancy Young [Y3b].
"Arch was a farmer and owned much land; upon his death, his estate came to about 1,100 acres. In 1860 he owned $33,000 worth of real estate. Years prior, his father had given other land to Arch's older brothers, but at that time Arch was still too young to receive a gift of land from his father. When Arch's father died, Arch then received his inheritance through his father's estate. Of all the sons of John Young, Arch was the only one to keep his land; the other brothers lost their property through bad investments, or through early death.
"The administrator of Arch's estate was Henry Houze, who was the husband of Arch's first cousin, Sarah A "Sissie" Smith, through Arch's mother's side of the family. Some of Arch's younger children moved in with their eldest sister Ann Eliza Young and her husband William David Smith, in Lincoln Co (there is no known relation between William David Smith and the other Smiths named here). Arch's burial place has not been found, but would likely be Beech Hill Cemetery; Louisa was buried there. Arch's widow Mendoza later married Marin Marks. Arch's thirteen children were:
1. Ann Eliza Young, b 11 Apr 1837
2. John Crutcher Young, b 5 Jun 1839
3. Nathaniel Abernathy Young, b 14 Apr 1841
4. Napoleon Bonapart Young, b 19 Aug 1843
5. Sarah Frances Young, b 6 Sep 1845
6. Mary Jane Young, b 6 Sep 1845
7. Louisa Catherine Young, b 27 Jul 1848
8. Adella Campbell Young, b 19 Feb 1851
9. Corine Almanza Young, b 6 Feb 1853
10. Charles Abernathy Young, b 14 Apr 1855
11. Martha Minerva Young, b 15 Feb 1858
12. Nancy Mendoza Young, b 6 Nov 1859
13. Archibald Oliver Young, b 21 Aug 1862

"Colmore B Sutton's wife was Sarah Catherine Harwell, daughter of Robert McNairy Harwell and Parthenia P Smith. After Colmore deserted his wife and daughter Jeffie Sutton following the murder of Arch, Sarah married a widower named Zachariah Smith in 1879. Zack was the son of Robert Smith, Arch's first cousin and the father of Henry Houze's wife Sissie Smith.
"Felix G McKnight was born 20 Sep 1819, and died 2 Feb 1852; he was buried in the Oliver family Cemetery in Giles Co. (58,L,MA,VS, GW,NY, GE,16r, 15knqprswyzc, 17c)." with Archibald Smith Young at Citation.1

Lucian Baird Erwin1

M, #97786, b. 1830
Last Edited30 Mar 2022
Lucian Baird Erwin was born in 1830 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA.1 He married Martha Ann Young, daughter of William C. Young and Elizabeth Kennedy, in 1854 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA.1

     Reference: Per Young [2011:1053]:
"Martha Ann Young [Y3a1], daughter of William C Young and Elizabeth Kennedy, was born about 1833 at Bradshaw in Giles Co TN (age 39 in 1880). She married Lucian Baird Erwin about 1854, probably in Giles Co since they both lived there in 1850. He was a saddle maker, born in Giles Co in 1830, and son of David Erwin and Mary Baird. In 1850 Lucian and his family lived in District 10 (1850 census showed Lucian and family as Irwin; 1840 they were Erwin). In 1860, now married to Martha, Lucian was age 30 and lived near Lynnville, Giles Co. Martha was age 27, daughter Mary E was 5, David was 4, Malissa was age 3, and William was age 1. In 1870 they were at Grand Tower, Jackson Co IL (under the spelling Irwin). Lucian was the head of the home, his wife was Jane (not Martha), but the names of the children were the same as in Giles Co in 1860. Everyone was born in TN. Ages of this IL family were 40 for Lucian (born 1830), 39 for Jane (born 1841), daughter Mary was 16; son David was 13; daughter Malissa was age 10, and Wm was age 8. In Dallas Co TX in 1880, Lucian B was age 49, his wife Martha was age 39, son David was age 24, and living next door was William Erwin, age 31, and William’s sister Mollie was age 16. Because of the ages of this family, William and Mollie must have been a nephew and niece, not Lucian’s and Martha’s children. Daughter Malissa must have married or died in the 1860s. Martha died in Van Zandt Co TX on 8 September 1888, They had four children
a. Mary E Erwin, b 1855
b. David A Erwin, b Nov 1855
c. Malissa Erwin, b 1857
d. William Erwin, b 1859

"David Erwin, father of Lucian, was age 40s in 1830 Giles in Co; age 40s again in 1840 Giles Co census; age 58 in 1850 Giles Co census, born in SC. His wife Mary was age 30s in 1830 Giles Co; 40s in 1840 and age 57 in 1850, born Abbeville, SC. The 1850 census showed Lucian and family as Irwin with an I instead of an E; in 1830 and 1840 they were Erwin. In 1840 their next door neighbors were David Erwin’s father John Erwin (age 80s), and Joseph Young (age 60s). David Erwin and wife Mary had a large family. Most or all children were born in Giles Co: James, Robert Woods, Elizabeth, William, David, Mary A, Joab, Matthew Alexander, Milton L, Lucian B, Pauline B, and John Erwin. He married Margaret King Young, daughter of William C. Young and Elizabeth Kennedy, before September 1865.1

     Reference: Per Young [2011:1051]:
"Margaret K Young [Y3a8], daughter of William C Young and Elizabeth Kennedy, was born 11 April 1846 in Giles Co TN. By September 1865 she had married James C Burgess, and in 1900 was a widow living in District 17 in Giles Co. James C was born in Giles Co on 21 October 1843, son of Henry K Burgess (born 1811 in VA) and Rachael Wilson (born 1816 in TN). Margaret, as Mrs M K Burgess, lived with her daughter Kate in District 17 in 1910, and widow Margaret lived with her widowed daughter Virginia in District 17 in 1920. Margaret was probably the "Mrs J C Burgess" who was buried in Brick Church Cemetery in Giles Co. Margaret’s birth date, per the 1900 census, was in April 1847; the birth and death dates on Mrs J C Burgess’ gravestone are 11 Apr 1846-15 Sep 1922. This must be Margaret. There are about twenty-one recognizable Burgess graves in this Cemetery; Brick Church is in civil District 17 of Giles Co, about midway between Pulaski and Cornersville, and is in the area where Margaret lived her whole married life and where her children were born and grew up. Buried next to Margaret is the grave of James C Burgess, with gravestone dates of 21 Oct 1843 - 31 May 1900. She and James had ten children, with seven still alive in 1900 and 1910. All were born in civil District 17 of Giles Co TN

Nathaniel Young (Sr.) was born circa 1794 at Spartanburg Co., South Carolina, USA.1,2 He married Nancy Paxton circa 1810 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA.2

Nathaniel Young (Sr.) died before 19 February 1827; Date of administration of estate.2
He was a mentioned with John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith at Citation; Young [2011:1015-17]:
"John Archibald Young [Y1], son of Nathaniel Young and Patty Crawford of the future Spartanburg Co SC, was born in 1774 in the area along the intersection of James Creek and Tyger River. His father died when John was but a boy of about 9, leaving John, his three or four brothers, possibly two sisters, and his mother Patty. In 1790 the family was living in the part of the County where the Tyger River crosses the Spartanburg-Union Co line. They lived in the James Creek-Tyger River neighborhood close to Nathaniel's brother Richard Young. As time went on, John owned land previously held by George Crawford, land next to his grandfather William Young's land. He married and had the first of his ten children there. His wife was Nancy Smith, one of many children of John Buckner Smith and Dianna _____ of nearby Dutchman's Creek. John and Nancy were members of Friendship Baptist Church of Spartanburg Co (a few miles north of James Creek). February 1792 deed records (Book F, Page 39) show that Buckner and Dianna sold a 127 acre plantation on Cain Creek near Tyger River to a Benjamin Grist, and in 1795 Buckner bought 126 acres along Dutchman's Creek, which was near the neighborhood of Richard and Nathaniel Young at James Creek. Therefore, John lived a short walk to Buckner's home for a few years prior to when he and Dianna were married.
"This couple belonged to the Tyger River Baptist Church (also called Friendship) at the turn of the 19th Century, as did many other local people who were later found in Giles Co TN. John and Nancy were probably married there about 1793. This pioneer church was located sixteen miles south east of the town of Spartanburg (about where the present town of Glenn Springs is today), and about five miles north of where John and Nancy had their home. In May 1801 John was "excluded for the sin of intemperence" (drinking or eating too much) by the church leaders. Nancy was born in 1776, so was about 17 at the time, a common age for a young woman to be married in those days.
"On 23 December 1808 John sold his small farm along James Creek to his brother-in-law Archibald Smith. This sale was witnessed by John Holley (probably the husband of John's niece Mary T Young [Y4a]) and by John's father-in-law Buckner Smith. Within a few weeks of this sale, John, Nancy, and their four sons and three daughters moved to Bradshaw Creek in eastern Giles Co TN. In March 1812 Archibald Smith sold the farm and also moved to the plush countryside of Giles Co living next door and east of John and Nancy; witnesses of this sale were Richard Young and William Young. Richard was John's uncle, and William was either a cousin or a brother. Although John and family arrived in Giles Co in early 1809, there is no record of him owning any land there until 22 February 1814 when he bought 171 acres along Bradshaw Creek from Samuel Polk of Maury Co. And in October 1816 John bought 100 acres along the headwaters of Bradshaw Creek, from Polk, land next to the first purchase. This is today at Beech Hill; the "headwaters of Bradshaw Creek," called Little Bradshaw Creek today, runs just west of the home he build there about 1816 or 1817. A witness of the first deed was Nathaniel Young, and the second deed was witnessed by John Young [Y1b], son of John and Nancy. Because John's brother Nathaniel was living nearby in Maury Co, it is not known whether witness Nathaniel Young was John's son or brother.
"In 1819 Nancy died and was buried in Beech Hill Cemetery just up the hill and west of their home (which was built soon after 1816, and was still occupied in 2010). Her gravestone said "Consort Of John Young." John then married Mrs Nancy ____ Buchanan, who already had a daughter, Mrs Frances T Craven, wife of John Craven. John and Nancy were members of the United Baptist Church of Christ in Giles Co. For at least 15 years prior to his death on 17 October 1838, John was a local Justice of the peace. He was buried in Beech Hill Cemetery next to Nancy Smith.
"In these early years, it was quite common to have children spaced 2 and 3 years apart. In the 1820 census, in John's home, the males were: one son under age 10 (Archibald), one son age 16-18 (Spencer), two sons age 16-25 (Buckner and William), and John, age 45 or older. Sons Nathaniel and John Jr had already married and left home. In 1830 in John's home t he r e wa s one ma l e age 5-9 (grandson William A Young, son of John's late son John Jr), one male age 15-19 (Archibald), and John, age 50-59. Missing in the neighborhood were son's Nathaniel (died in the 1820s), John Jr (died in the 1820s), and William Young (recently married, and was perhaps living with his in-laws). Son Spencer was married and lived next door to John; son Buckner was married and lived in the same area, but quite a few doors away. In 1840 in Nancy Young's home (John's widow), there were no sons. Living next door to Nancy was son Archibald (age 20-29) and son William (age 30-39). Sons Buckner and Spencer each lived in their own homes in Giles Co, closer to each other than they were to Archibald and William. John A Young and Nancy Smith had at least eleven children:
a. Nathaniel Young, b c1794
b. John Young Jr, b 1795
c. Buckner K Young, b 1799
d. William Young, b abt 1801
e. Rebecca Young, b 10 Jul 1802
f. Spencer Young, b 22 Nov 1804
g. Dianna Young, b abt 1809
h. Elizabeth Young, b abt 1811
i. Martha Young, b 29 Jan 1812
j. Archibald Smith Young, b 1814
k. Nancy Young, b 1816

"The Tyger River Baptist Church (also called Friendship Baptist Church) was closely affiliated with Boiling Spring Baptist Church, which was in Union Co close to the home of Major Thomas Young. Families of the Tyger River Church from 1801 to 1804 who were also found in TN counties within a few years were: Beard, Golightly, Meadows, Moore, Smith, Willeford, Willis, and Young (John and wife Nancy Smith).
"Buckner Smith, John's father-in-law, and Buckner's wife Diana probably moved to Bradshaw with their son Archibald Smith about 1812, from Dinwiddie Co VA. The 1789 personal property tax list of Dinwiddie shows Archibald Smith and Millington Smith, and other Smith families. In 1790 Millington was living near John Young's uncles Richard and Thomas Young, and near John's mother, in Spartanburg Co SC.
"A Charles Moore, a pioneer of Scotch-Irish descent, moved to Spartanburg Co from PA about 1763 and built his log home 8 miles southeast of the present town of Spartanburg. It would be reasonable to assume that this Charles Moore was the ancestor of most, if not all of the Moores of Spartanburg Co into the early 19th Century. (N, 9 1 , 5 5 , 5 6 , NY,VS,GE, GY, SH,MA,RL, 75,JY, 15wijzytc, 1aez.)3

Reference: Young [2011:1088]:
"Nathaniel Young [Y1a], son of John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith, was born about 1794 in the James Creek-Tyger River community of Spartanburg Co SC. He was a teen when his parents moved the family to Beech Hill in eastern Giles Co TN, where he reached adulthood and owned his first property. In the latter years of the 1810s, and through the first of the 1820s, Nathaniel sold his farmland at or near Beech Hill and moved to Pulaski where he became a business man with James Perry (the county's first sheriff in 1825), and was a county constable. He apparently fared poorly in business, as he and James were quite often sued for unpaid debts. In August 1822 Nathaniel bought a brick house at the northeast corner of Pulaski from Fountain Lester. And in February 1823 he bought the corner lot "being the tavern lot and formerly the property of Thomas
Smith," on the north side of the public square at Pulaski. In November 1825, and on many other dates, he was granted an "ordinary license" (liquor license) for one year, so apparently ran one of the first saloons at Pulaski. He sold the tavern to William C Flournoy in the following August.
"Nathaniel Young and Albert C Underwood were given the share of John C Underwood's inheritance of the estate of the late George Underwood, who died on 26 August 1824 (Giles Co deed book F, page 414). What connection Nathaniel had with John C Underwood is not known, but this could have been a debt owed by John to Nathaniel and Albert, and repaid when George Underwood's estate was passed to John.
"Nathaniel married Nancy Paxton about 1810. She was perhaps a year or two older than he, a daughter of Samuel Paxton (who died circa August 1824) and his wife Margaret ____. On 19 February 1827 the Giles Co court "ordered that John Young & Charles C Abernathy be appointed adms of the estate of Nathaniel Young decd." A week later John Dickey and William Conner were appointed guardians of "Caroline Young, Robert Young, Nancy Young, Margaret Young, and Felix Young, minor orphans of Nathaniel Young decd." Nancy lived into the 1830s, but was not found on any records after then. The six children of Nathaniel and Nancy were:
1. Nathaniel Young II, b 1811-1820
2. Robert Young, b 5 Jan 1816
3. Polly Caroline Young, b 1816-1820
4. Nancy L Young, b 1819
5. Margaret Young, b 1821-1825
6. Felix G Young, b 3 Jan 1824 (56,57,N, 15ijwyz)
at Citation.2

Nathaniel Young (Sr.) was listed as a resident in John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith's household in the census report in 1800 at Spartanburg Co., South Carolina, USA; There is a William (line 17), two Johns (lines 12 and 13), and a Thomas Younge (line 4) on this page. William and one of the Johns were brothers. The Thomas enumerated is listed as 45 and over, so too old to be their brother Thomas. of the two Johns, one (line 12) is listed as aged 26-44. The second (line 13) is younger - listed as aged 16-25. Thus the one on line 12 best matches John Archibald Young, the brother of William (line 17). The Thomas on line 4 is probably his uncle. The second John (line 13) is unidentified.

John Young Jr. was born in 1795 at Spartanburg Co., South Carolina, USA.2 He married Unknown (?) in 1820 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA.3

John Young Jr. was a mentioned with John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith at Citation; Young [2011:1015-17]:

Reference: Young [2011:1014]: "John Young Jr [Y1b], son of John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith, was born about 1795 in Spartanburg Co SC and came with his family to Beech Hill in Giles Co when he was a teenager. He married in 1820, but the name of his wife is unknown. She was born in TN in 1806-1810. John died in the winter of 1825-1826, probably in Giles Co although his grave has never been found. He would have probably been buried in Beech Hill Cemetery, the family Cemetery in the early and mid-19th century of the Young families of the area. John's wife may have died about the same time, or at the birth of their son; she has never been found on any records. Also, according to Giles Co deed records (Book J, Page 469), John's son was supposed to have been supported by John's brother Buckner (John's father actually supported the boy), and there was never any mention of John's widow in these records. John only had one child:
1. William A Young, b Mar 1822 (15izys)
" at Citation.3

John Young Jr. was listed as a resident in John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith's household in the census report in 1800 at Spartanburg Co., South Carolina, USA; There is a William (line 17), two Johns (lines 12 and 13), and a Thomas Younge (line 4) on this page. The second John (line 13) is unidentified.

; Young [2011:932-3]:
"Buckner K Young [Y1c], son of John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith, was born in 1799 in Spartanburg Co SC. He was named after his mother's father, and was about 9 years old when his family moved to the Beech Hill area of the new Giles Co in the early months of 1809, and in this part of the county is where Buckner spent most of the remainder of his life. About 1827 he married Frances Cox, probably in Giles Co since the neighboring counties have no marriage record for this couple. Frances was born about 1792 in Chatham Co NC, daughter of Presley Cox (a Revolutionary War veteran) and Sarah Brinkley. After Buckner and Frances married they moved to the northeast part of Giles Co living among the Cox families near Cornersville. In 1830 they had one young son, yet in 1840 the census shows three teenage boys living with Buckner who were too old to be his own; they had taken in the orphaned son of his brother John Young Jr [Y1b] and two other unidentified boys. Apparently the unknown boys were working in a manufacturing trade while the rest of the family were farmers. In February 1827 Buckner was appointed to the position of constable after Hardy Willeford (son of Britton) resigned, but soon began farming. There is no record of Buckner Young ever owning Giles Co land.
"He had two major financial setbacks (i.e., bankruptcies): First, in January 1833 Buckner had to put his slaves up as security for unpaid debts, one being $800 owed to his father. Within two months of this, he and Frances sold her expected inheritance from her late father's estate. This still did not cover his debts, for in April Buckner appointed his brother Spencer to be the trustee for the payments of the remaining debts. Most of them were owed to his father, who was often a cosigner for Buckner's notes. And fifteen years later, in 1848, Buckner appointed his nephew Amaziah Young [Y9c], who lived in Maury Co to be the trustee for the payment of his debts in a reorganization of business matters. In both cases Buckner had no living sons of legal age to handle these matters, hence he asked his brother and nephew to be the trustees. Buckner's wife Frances died in the 1850s, and is probably buried in a Cox Cemetery since she is not in Beech Hill Cemetery. Soon before 22 April 1865, Buckner died broke, leaving useless Confederate money and little else to his heirs. Buckner's brother-in-law Wylie Willis Willeford [Y6b] was the administrator. There were seven children:
1. John C Young, b 1 Nov 1828
2. dau Young, b 1831-1835
3. Nancy Elizabeth Young, b 1833
4. Almyra Young, b 1837
5. William P Young, b 1838
6. Mary E Young, b 1842. She was not shown in the 1850 census, while Tennessee was. In 1860 this daughter was Mary J, age 18; there was no daughter named Tennessee in 1860. (15nq)
7. Isabella Young, b 1843 (L,MA,VS, 15cyjknqpz.)2

1. William A Young, b Mar 1822 (15izys.)7

William Young was born circa 1801 at Spartanburg Co., South Carolina, USA.1 He married Allie/Ala/Aley (?) circa 1829 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA,
;
Her 1st husband.2
William Young died before 1851; His last child, Henry, was born in 1849 and Alley was apparently living with her parents by the time of the 1850 census.

Reference: Young [2011:1147-8]:
"William Young [Y1d], son of John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith. was born about 1801 in Spartanburg Co SC. He was about 7 or 8 years old when his family moved to the Beech Hill area of the new Giles Co in the early months of 1809. He married Allie (Ala? Aley?) _____ about 1829 in Giles Co TN. In 1830 they were not found, but were probably living with Alie's family in Giles Co. William died about 1849, probably in Marshall Co; Alie and her children lived there in 1850.
"There is no actual proof, such as a will or land gift records, to show that William was a son of John and Nancy, but there is substantial evidence that William was a son of John A Young and Nancy Smith: a son of William's approximate age was shown in the 1820 Giles Co census, and in 1840 he lived next door to his widowed step-mother and brother Alexander. Also, in the 1840 census, he had children who's sex and ages exactly matched the children from the 1850 census who were born by 1840. And of all the counties surrounding Giles Co, all had existing marriage records well into the 20th Century, except for Giles Co, which had a courthouse fire at the end of the Civil War which destroyed their marriage records. Hence, no marriage record of around 1829 for William and Allie was found, indicating that they married in Giles Co. In 1850 Alie (Ala in 1850) was living in District 4 of Marshall Co TN with her children. Her youngest child was born in 1849, so her husband must have died soon before the summer of 1850. District 4 of Marshall Co was next to District 17 of Giles Co (Cornersville area). Ala was born in NC in 1809, but all six of her children from the 1850 Marshall Co censes were born in TN. A search of the 1840 census for Marshall, Bedford, and Lincoln Counties did not show any reliable clues as to who her husband was. Only Giles Co had clues to find her husband.
"Since there was an eleven year gap between daughters Drucilla and Lucy, a search of the marriage records in the Giles Co and surrounding counties for Ms Ala _____ and a Mr Young in the mid-1840s found nothing. Allie had a second marriage, to a Mr Blackshear, after 1850 in Lincoln Co, but was again a widow by 1870. That marriage record was also not found. She was then living in District 10 of Lincoln Co (Allie, age 60), next door to her son Gabriel; two children from the 1850 census still lived with her. District 10 is the large northernmost Civil District in Lincoln Co, next to southern Marshall Co to the northwest, Bradford Co directly nor th, and next to Moor e Co to the northeast. Petersburg in Lincoln Co's District 10 is about twenty miles northeast of where William and Allie lived in Giles Co in 1840 and where most of their children were born. In 1880, still in Lincoln Co, she was Aley, age 71, and lived next door to her son Mark, and was next to some Blackshear neighbors; her son Henry was using the Blackshear name, and was age 30. Aley's daughter Sarah was still at home with Aley in 1880. Her children with William Young were:
1. Marcus Madison Young, b Apr 1830
2. Sarah J Young, b Apr 1832
3. Gabriel Young, b Apr 1834
4. Drucilla Ann Young, b 24 Feb 1836
5. Lucy Young, b 1846
6. Henry Young, b 1849

"There were two other pre-1870 Young settlers in Lincoln Co, in addition to William and Allie's children. Two were: John Young, born 24 Mar 1842 in NH, moved to IL in the 1850s, and settled in District 3 Lincoln Co about 1867 (southeast area). He married Sarah M Bradford in Lincoln Co on 8 Feb 1870 and had five children. And there was William D Young, born in Franklin Co on 10 May 1834, grew up in Franklin Co, and married Martha E Wiseman in Franklin Co on 4 Jan 1858. They lied in Franklin Co in 1860, then were living in District 2 of Lincoln Co in 1870 (south center of the county), then was in District 4 in 1880 (northeast side of the county, next to Moore and Franklin Counties). They had eight sons. (55,15k,17n, 630nqm, 16mrs)." at Citation.4

William Young appeared in the census of 1840 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA; There is an A. YOUNG, a Nancy YOUNG, and a Wm YOUNG, side by side on the same page of the 1840 census. A. and Wm. are probably Archibald Smith YOUNG and his brother William. I had thought the older Nancy YOUNG, might be their widowed mother, Nancy (Smith) YOUNG, but she died in 1819. It is assumed that her husband remarried on her death, since he had young children at the time and appears to have a wife in the 1830 census, but the name of a second wife (if any) is unknown.
