Frances Cox was born circa 1792 at Chatham Co., North Carolina, USA.1 She married Buckner K. Young, son of John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith, in 1827 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA.1
; Young [2011:932-3]:
"Buckner K Young [Y1c], son of John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith, was born in 1799 in Spartanburg Co SC. He was named after his mother's father, and was about 9 years old when his family moved to the Beech Hill area of the new Giles Co in the early months of 1809, and in this part of the county is where Buckner spent most of the remainder of his life. About 1827 he married Frances Cox, probably in Giles Co since the neighboring counties have no marriage record for this couple. Frances was born about 1792 in Chatham Co NC, daughter of Presley Cox (a Revolutionary War veteran) and Sarah Brinkley. After Buckner and Frances married they moved to the northeast part of Giles Co living among the Cox families near Cornersville. In 1830 they had one young son, yet in 1840 the census shows three teenage boys living with Buckner who were too old to be his own; they had taken in the orphaned son of his brother John Young Jr [Y1b] and two other unidentified boys. Apparently the unknown boys were working in a manufacturing trade while the rest of the family were farmers. In February 1827 Buckner was appointed to the position of constable after Hardy Willeford (son of Britton) resigned, but soon began farming. There is no record of Buckner Young ever owning Giles Co land.
"He had two major financial setbacks (i.e., bankruptcies): First, in January 1833 Buckner had to put his slaves up as security for unpaid debts, one being $800 owed to his father. Within two months of this, he and Frances sold her expected inheritance from her late father's estate. This still did not cover his debts, for in April Buckner appointed his brother Spencer to be the trustee for the payments of the remaining debts. Most of them were owed to his father, who was often a cosigner for Buckner's notes. And fifteen years later, in 1848, Buckner appointed his nephew Amaziah Young [Y9c], who lived in Maury Co to be the trustee for the payment of his debts in a reorganization of business matters. In both cases Buckner had no living sons of legal age to handle these matters, hence he asked his brother and nephew to be the trustees. Buckner's wife Frances died in the 1850s, and is probably buried in a Cox Cemetery since she is not in Beech Hill Cemetery. Soon before 22 April 1865, Buckner died broke, leaving useless Confederate money and little else to his heirs. Buckner's brother-in-law Wylie Willis Willeford [Y6b] was the administrator. There were seven children:

1. John C Young, b 1 Nov 1828
2. dau Young, b 1831-1835
3. Nancy Elizabeth Young, b 1833
4. Almyra Young, b 1837
5. William P Young, b 1838
6. Mary E Young, b 1842. She was not shown in the 1850 census, while Tennessee was. In 1860 this daughter was Mary J, age 18; there was no daughter named Tennessee in 1860. (15nq)

William P. Young was born in 1838 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA.1
; Young [2011:932-3]:

Isabella Young was born in 1843 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA.1
; Young [2011:932-3]:

Rufus Knight Young was born on 17 April 1795 at Providence Co., Rhode Island, USA.2 He married Rebecca Young, daughter of John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith, on 31 March 1820 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA.3
Rufus Knight Young died on 3 February 1870 at Shelby Co., Tennessee, USA, at age 74.4
Reference: Young [2011:1011]:
"Rebecca Young [Y1e], daughter of John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith, was born 10 July 1802 in Spartanburg Co SC and moved to Beech Hill in eastern Giles Co when she was about six years old. Early in 1820 she married Rufus Knight Young [Y9]. Her line is continued under her husband's name."
Young [2011:1113-15]:
"Rufus Knight Young [Y9], son of Amaziah Young and Ann _____ of Providence Co RI, was born 17 April 1795 in Providence Co; he is first found in Giles Co in the 1820 census. The only clues of the parentage of Rufus are that his third child (eldest son) had the name Amaziah; his eldest child was Harriet Knight Young; and the 1850, 1860, 1880, and 1900 census records in various TN counties show that Rufus was born in RI. There was an Amaziah Young living at Cranston Town, Providence Co RI in 1790 with a family of six children. This Amaziah lived among many Knight families. There were many Young families in the county but the Knight families were only at Cranston and at Scituate, with Young families clustered close by. From Cranston to Scituate is about ten miles. In the 1777 military census Rufus Knight (age 16 to 50) lived at Scituate; in the 1790 census there was no Rufus Knight, but there were many Knight families clustered near the Amaziah Young family at Cranston. Circumstantial evidence indicates that Rufus K Young may be a son of Amaziah Young and Ms ____ Knight of Providence Co RI; and family records kept by descendant Albert Young [Y9m3] of St Louis MO states that the father of Rufus K Young was Amaziah and Ann Young from England. Perhaps Rufus' maternal grandfather was the Rufus Knight of the 1777 military census.
"From information from another Young cousin, we now know that Rufus’s parents were Amaziah Young and Ann ____ _ (Knight?), who were both probably born in England. Rufus, the son, was age 17 when he enlisted for the War of 1812, on the American side. Seaman Rufus was captured when the ship Ned was defeated on 6 September 1813 by the British ship Royalist, at the Bay of Biscay just off the French coast, and was taken to Dartmoor Prison in London for the 21 month remainder of the war. Rufus entered Dartmoor Prison on 27 September 1813, as prisoner #701; his prison records show he was from "the city of Providence." Many of the other prisoners with Rufus, who had prison numbers in the 700 to 721 range, came from Philadelphia, East Haven, NY, etc. Rufus was repatriated from England to France to Providence RI, and was discharged on 16 March 1815. He was released on 29 June 1815, and then went to NY for college. From entrance records at Dartmoor Prison, Rufus Young was described as slight, 5 foot 5½ inches tall. no wounds or marks at age 18. He had blue eyes, an oval face, was fair complected, and had brown hair.
"Rufus took a position as Principal of a school in Giles Co TN, probably in the late 1810s, where he met his future bride. We do know Rufus K Young married Rebecca Young [Y1e] in Giles Co on 31 March 1820. Her father owned a great number of slaves and he offered to give Rufus and Rebecca two Negro men and one Negro woman for a wedding Present. Rufus would not accept them as he did not believe in slavery. In April 1820 Rufus bought 25 acres from Lewis Smith along Bradshaw Creek close to Rebecca's uncle Joseph Young [Y3] ; this transaction was witnessed by Nathaniel Young [Y1a] and John Young [Y1b], thus signifying that Rufus and Rebecca had already married since the witnesses were her brothers. Also, Lewis Smith was probably Rebecca's first cousin, if not her mother's brother.
"In the 1830s Rufus, Rebecca, and their older two children were members of Robertson Fork Church in the northeast corner of Giles Co (now on the Marshall-Giles Co line, just off of the Lynnville-Cornersville road). Perhaps by then they had moved the few miles from Bradshaw to the Cornersville area. Rebecca was born 10 July 1802 in Spartanburg Co (in "Spartsburg," per family records) SC, daughter of John Young and Nancy Smith. Rebecca came with her family to Giles Co at the age of six years and grew up at Beech Hill. After she and Rufus married, they lived in Giles Co until sometime after the summer of 1843, for in August that year Rufus witnessed the will of Joseph Knox Sr in Giles Co. In 1850 Rufus and three of his children were living in Hardeman Co TN; in 1860 this couple was still in Hardeman Co. Rufus was a teacher most of his life, but did some farming. He died on 3 February 1870 in Shelby Co probably close to Collierville where they lived. Rebecca died at Collierville on 19 October 1875. They had eleven children, all born in Giles Co TN:
"Much of source PY’s info of Rufus came from research done by Robert V Young [Y9m7] of his Young family in England. Robert was in the US Military in 1946, stationed in Germany, and during a furlough, he traveled from Germany to London and obtained the prisoner of war record of Rufus. All the names and birth dates of the eleven children shown above came from the Young family Bible, owned by Henry Clay Young [Y9m]. You must remember that in 1946, that generation was still familiar with family history handed down which told of the origins of this Young family in America, which were of the great grandparent’s generation of those alive in 1946.
"Rufus Young’s father Amaziah lived in Scituate RI which (in Amaziah’s generation) was the center of the early Six Principle Baptist Churches. Also, Rufus Knight, Abiathar Young, Asa Young, etc. enrolled during the Revolution in Scituate in the First Rhode Island Regiment. This troop was nearly obliterated in NY. The First Regiment was reconstituted by the addition of large numbers of black freemen and former slaves (the Continental Army had matched the British promise of freedom for enlistment at this time.) Rufus Knight Young and Rebecca Young appeared in the census of 1840 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA; Rufus was often enumerated as R. K. and was known to be in Giles Co. in 1840. Thus, he could be the A. K in this 1840 census enumeration. Rufus and Rebecca had had at least 10 children born before 1840. This enumeration shows 5 children, the ages of which those of the 10 assumed to be living in 1840. One daughter, Harriet, m. Reuben East ca 1840 (per Young [2011:981]), so was probably not in her parent's home. There are two EAST families on this page (Thos and Bazel). A son, Buckner, is per Young [2011:932] believed to have died in the 1830's. Another son, Willis, was not found in the 1850 census, and could, in fact, have been dead before 1840. A third son, John, died 25 September 1835. The ages match for their parents and the known and their supposed living children:

"Rufus Young’s father Amaziah lived in Scituate RI which (in Amaziah’s generation) was the center of the early Six Principle Baptist Churches. Also, Rufus Knight, Abiathar Young, Asa Young, etc. enrolled during the Revolution in Scituate in the First Rhode Island Regiment. This troop was nearly obliterated in NY. The First Regiment was reconstituted by the addition of large numbers of black freemen and former slaves (the Continental Army had matched the British promise of freedom for enlistment at this time.) Thus, he could be the A. K in this 1840 census enumeration. Rufus and Rebecca had had at least 10 children born before 1840. This enumeration shows 5 children, the ages of which those of the 10 assumed to be living in 1840. One daughter, Harriet, m. Ann Adolphe Young was listed as a resident in Rufus Knight Young and Rebecca Young's household in the census report in 1840 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA; Rufus was often enumerated as R. K. and was known to be in Giles Co.
