M, #97897, b. circa March 1823, d. 19 August 1879

Mother | Rebecca Young1 b. 10 Jul 1802, d. 19 Oct 1875 |

Amaziah Young was born circa March 1823 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA.1,2 He married Mary Elizabeth Cherry on 11 August 1842 at Columbia, Maury Co., Tennessee, USA.2
Amaziah Young died on 19 August 1879 at Collierville, Shelby Co., Tennessee, USA.2
Amaziah Young was listed as a resident in Rufus Knight Young and Rebecca Young's household in the census report in 1840 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA; Rufus was often enumerated as R. K. and was known to be in Giles Co. in 1840. Thus, he could be the A. K in this 1840 census enumeration. Rufus and Rebecca had had at least 10 children born before 1840. This enumeration shows 5 children, the ages of which those of the 10 assumed to be living in 1840. One daughter, Harriet, m. Reuben East ca 1840 (per Young [2011:981]), so was probably not in her parent's home. There are two EAST families on this page (Thos and Bazel). A son, Buckner, is per Young [2011:932] believed to have died in the 1830's. Another son, Willis, was not found in the 1850 census, and could, in fact, have been dead before 1840. A third son, John, died 25 September 1835. The ages match for their parents and the known and their supposed living children:

John G. McCanless1

John G. McCanless married Dianna Young, daughter of John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith, between 1844 and 1845 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA.1
John G. McCanless was a mentioned with Archibald Smith Young at Citation; Per Young [2011:924]:
"Archibald Smith Young [Y1j], son of John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith, was born in 1816 at Beech Hill in Giles Co. He lived close to Beech Hill through 1850, but by 1860 had moved closer to the Pulaski area. On 29 June 1836 he married Louisa Catherine Abernathy at Pulaski. She was born in the east side of Giles Co on 12 January 1816, daughter of John Abernathy (he a son of William Abernathy, a Revolutionary War patriot) and Catherine Tarpley. John Abernathy's farm was the third farm south of Archibald's father's farm. With the birth of her eleventh child, Louisa died on 15 February 1858 in Giles Co. "Mrs L Young / Consort Of / A S Young" was buried in Beech Hill Cemetery. Within a few months Arch took a second wife, on 20 June 1858; she was Nancy Mendoza S Oliver, widow of Felix G McKnight. Mendoza was born in Giles Co on 9 January 1826, daughter of Major Ananias Oliver and Nancy Featherstone Harwell, and died 18 February 1892 in Giles Co. Arch was wealthy, and with wealth there are usually enemies. He was murdered by Colmore B Sutton, his neighbor to the north and east of Arch's farm, on 14 March 1862 at Bradshaw over an argument about a fence or a fence line. The 1869 Giles Co court records state that the charge was First Degree murder, but the authorities discontinued their pursuit of Colmore Sutton and John McCanless since "the defendants have gone to parts unknown and have not been heard from in several years." What part in the murder John McCanless had is not known, but the motive may have had something to do with family ties: John McCanless was the husband of Arch's sister Dianna Young [Y1g]; possibly the reason that John was an accomplice in the murder of Arch was because of a sour marriage between John and Dianna, in which Arch may have sided with Dianna. See the biography of Nancy Young [Y3b].
"Arch was a farmer and owned much land; upon his death, his estate came to about 1,100 acres. In 1860 he owned $33,000 worth of real estate. Years prior, his father had given other land to Arch's older brothers, but at that time Arch was still too young to receive a gift of land from his father. When Arch's father died, Arch then received his inheritance through his father's estate. Of all the sons of John Young, Arch was the only one to keep his land; the other brothers lost their property through bad investments, or through early death.
"The administrator of Arch's estate was Henry Houze, who was the husband of Arch's first cousin, Sarah A "Sissie" Smith, through Arch's mother's side of the family. Some of Arch's younger children moved in with their eldest sister Ann Eliza Young and her husband William David Smith, in Lincoln Co (there is no known relation between William David Smith and the other Smiths named here). Arch's burial place has not been found, but would likely be Beech Hill Cemetery; Louisa was buried there. Arch's widow Mendoza later married Marin Marks. Arch's thirteen children were:
"Colmore B Sutton's wife was Sarah Catherine Harwell, daughter of Robert McNairy Harwell and Parthenia P Smith. After Colmore deserted his wife and daughter Jeffie Sutton following the murder of Arch, Sarah married a widower named Zachariah Smith in 1879. Zack was the son of Robert Smith, Arch's first cousin and the father of Henry Houze's wife Sissie Smith.
"Felix G McKnight was born 20 Sep 1819, and died 2 Feb 1852; he was buried in the Oliver family Cemetery in Giles Co. (58,L,MA,VS, GW,NY, GE,16r, 15knqprswyzc, 17c)."2

Young [2011:946-7]:
"Dianna Young [Y1g], daughter of John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith, was born about 1809 in Spartanburg Co SC. She was named after her maternal grandmother, and was just a baby when her parents moved to Beech Hill in Giles Co TN, so Beech Hill and Giles Co is the only home she knew. It appears that in the 1840s, after the death of her father, Dianna lived with her step-mother Nancy _____, who lived next door to Dianna's brother Archibald Smith Young [Y1j] at Beech Hill. She married John G McCanless relatively late in life, about 1844 or early 1845. He was born in TN about 1817, possibly a son of William McCanless or Jane _____ and _____ McCanless (the only McCanless names in the 1830 Giles Co census who could be John's parent). In 1850 John and Dianna were living in District 10 in Giles Co where he was a farmer. In 1860 Dianna and her children were still there, but John was not. Since John was not living with Dianna and their children in 1860, and since John was charged as one of the murderers of Dianna's brother Arch, it is possible that Dianna and John had split up in the 1850s and Arch had made an enemy of John by taking sides with his sister in family disputes. (See the Archibald Smith Young biography.)
"In 1870 Dianna was living near the town of Diana in Giles Co. She was not found in the county after 1870. Her children were:

Unknown (?) died between 1925 and 1926 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA.1
Reference: Young [2011:1014]: "John Young Jr [Y1b], son of John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith, was born about 1795 in Spartanburg Co SC and came with his family to Beech Hill in Giles Co when he was a teenager. He married in 1820, but the name of his wife is unknown. She was born in TN in 1806-1810. John died in the winter of 1825-1826, probably in Giles Co although his grave has never been found. He would have probably been buried in Beech Hill Cemetery, the family Cemetery in the early and mid-19th century of the Young families of the area. John's wife may have died about the same time, or at the birth of their son; she has never been found on any records. Also, according to Giles Co deed records (Book J, Page 469), John's son was supposed to have been supported by John's brother Buckner (John's father actually supported the boy), and there was never any mention of John's widow in these records. John only had one child:

"William Abernathy Young [Y1b1], son of John Young Jr and an unknown mother, was born 18 March 1822 in Giles Co. He married Ethalinda Smith on 11 February 1841 at Pulaski. The minister at the wedding was William's cousin (and uncle by marriage) Willis Willeford [Y6b], while the witnesses were William's aunt Martha Young [Y1i], wife of the minister, and Elizabeth Wilson. Ethalinda was born in Giles Co on 26 August 1824, daughter of Robert Smith and Mildred Christmas Rhodes. Ethalinda's grandmother was a sister of William's father, thus making Ethalinda a first cousin to William's father. Ethalinda died on 21 April 1886 and William on 8 August 1904. He was a farmer near Lynnville in the 1860s, but lived near Beech Hill for a few years after marrying. They had no children, but over the years usually had a cousin or other relative living with them. When Ethalinda's sister Mary and her husband Gardner M Harwell died (see Dorothy C Young [Y4f]), William and Ethalinda raised Mary's two orphaned daughters Madora Jane and Ethalinda Martha Mendosa Harwell. From the Robert Smith Bible, we get the information that "Robbert Smith was born 1793 / Mildred C. James M. Fuller was born in 1807 at North Carolina, USA.1 He married Nancy Young, daughter of John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith, on 3 January 1837 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA.1,2
Reference: Young [2011:1081]:
"Nancy Young [Y1k], daughter of John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith, was born about 1815 at Beech Hill in eastern Giles Co. She married James M Fuller, a farmer, on 3 January 1837. He was born in NC in 1807 (born in TN per 1870 census). They apparently had marital problems, for divorce proceedings were begun about December 1839. This divorce was not carried through since they were still together in 1840 and 1850, living at Bradshaw next door to Nancy's brother Archibald Smith Young [Y1j]. In the mid-1850s Nancy, James, and their children moved to Fishing River, Ray Co MO. He was a carpenter there in 1860, but was a farmer in 1880. By 1850 they had six children, then two more by 1860:
"Nancy's sister Elizabeth married John W Fuller, who was born in 1802 in NC. Any relationship between him and Nancy's husband James M Fuller is not known. (540qrs, 15zwkny) at Citation.2

James L. Fuller was born on 29 July 1834 at Giles Co., Tennessee, USA.1
He was a mentioned with Elizabeth Young at Citation; Young [2011:956]:
"Elizabeth Young [Y1h], daughter of John Archibald Young and Nancy Smith, was born about 1811 at Beech Hill in Giles Co TN. She married John W Fuller about 1825, and lived for nine to twelve more years, having died by December 1837 when her father's will was written. Elizabeth was probably buried in the Beech Hill Cemetery although her grave has not been located. The will of Elizabeth's father named her four children then living, yet census records of 1840 show three more than the four named in the will; the extra three children, the youngest of seven at the time, belonged to John W's second wife, Rebecca Brown, born in 1815 in NC. John W was born in 1802 in NC, and was probably a brother of the James M Fuller (born 1807 in NC) who married Elizabeth's sister Nancy Young [Y1k]. In 1820 the only Fuller families in the area were in Lincoln Co. John was a farmer and lived in district 9 of Giles Co in 1850. He died 29 July 1876. He and Rebecca had about thirteen children With Elizabeth he had five:
"John W Fuller’s and Rebecca Brown’s children were: Edward E, born 30 Oct 1837; Elizabeth C, born 3 Oct 1838; Mary E, born 1 Jan 1840; Angus B, born 27 Feb 1841; Roan, born 20 Jan 1842; Effie, born 20 Jan 1842; William D, born 8 Jan 1846; Sarah, born 10 Apr 1848; Milton, born 20 May 1849; Abigail, born 3 May 1851; Solomon, born 31 Jul 1854; Eliza, born 1 Feb 1855; and Xantippie Fuller, born 16 Jan 1857.
