Bazel Meek was born in 1804 at Henry Co. (now), Kentucky, USA.1 He married Mary "Polly" Erwin, daughter of Robert Erwin and Temperance Meek, circa 1819.1
Bazel Meek died on 9 July 1874 at Missouri, USA.1
Bazel Meek was buried after 9 July 1874 at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Granby, Newton Co., Missouri, USA;
From Find a Grave:
Birth 1804
Death 9 Jul 1874 (aged 69–70), Missouri, USA
Burial Odd Fellows Cemetery, Granby, Newton County, Missouri, USA
Two couples were married on January 8, 1795 in modern Henry County, Kentucky. Jeremiah Meek wed Mary Cornwell and Robert Erwin married Temperence Meek. Jeremiah and Temperence were children of John Meek, the one-eyed Revolutionary War pensioner who died in Henry County, Kentucky in 1803. Jeremiah Meek and Robert Erwin were bondsmen for each other.
About the year 1819, Bazel Meek, son of Jeremiah and Mary Cornwell Meek married Mary "Polly" Erwin, daughter of Robert and Temperence Meek Erwin.
Thomas Kenedy Erwin (T.K.) told his oral Erwin history in 1897 to his son, James Erwin, who wrote it down in a small notebook. T.K said: "Robert Erwin, brother of Joseph Erwin of Revolutionary times, grand uncle of T.K. Erwin, came from Virginia in an early day and lived for a number of years in Henry County, Kentucky, where he died about the year 1823 [1813]. He had children named as follows; Squire, Joseph, William, Thomas, Washington, Bazzle and Harrison, boys and one girl named Polly who married a man named Meeks. Meeks moved to Galena, Ill., and Harrison Erwin was raised by him and the last heard of him (Harrison Erwin) he was at Battoon [Mattoon], Ill."
Robert and Temperence Meek Erwin were both deceased by 1820. The 1820 census listing for Squire Erwin possibly includes Bazel and Mary "Polly" Erwin Meek.Squire Boone Erwin and Bazel Meek Jr. are listed as administrators of the Estate of Temperence Erwin in 1820.
The Bazel Meek Jr. family is apparently in Hancock County, Indiana for the 1830 census. Their family included two boys under the age of 10, three girls under age 10 and one boy age between 15 and 20 who must be Harrison Erwin.
The Bazel Meek family is enumerated in Jo Daviess County, Illinois in 1840. Four boys and four girls are listed. The Harrison Erwin family is enumerated in Edgar County, Illinois.
Amanda Meek marries James Overstreet in Lafayette County, Wisconsin on April 25, 1847. Lafayette County, Wisconsin is just across the state line from Jo Daviess County, Illinois.
Thomas Ginn Meek marries Ann M. Ward on July 3, 1850 in Jo Daviess County, Illinois.
Rachel Ann Meek marries Noah W. Bixler on August 18, 1850 in Jo Daviess County, Illinois.
Mary Jane Meek marries John Moon in Jo Daviess County, Illinois on November 12, 1851.
Mary "Polly" Erwin Meek evidently passes away in Jo Daviess County, Illinois before October 5, 1848 as Bazel Meek married Mary E. Clark on that date in Jo Daviess County, Illinois. John Cornwell Meek is born to this union. The 1850 mortality schedule for Jo Daviess County, Illinois lists Mary Meeks, age 29, born in Kentucky, died in April, 1850. Mary is not listed on the 1850 census with Bayale [Bazel] Meek. Bazel Meek marries Eunice Wishon on March 11, 1852 in Jo Daviess County, Illinois. William "Billy" Meek is born to this marriage.
Squire Boone Erwin Meek marries Jane Ann Jeoffrey on July 27, 1859 in Lafayette County, Wisconsin. ( Mary Erwin Meek's brother, Squire Boone Erwin fought with Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans in January 1815)
Basil Edward Meek marries Emma Ward on March 3, 1860 in Steele County, Minnesota. The last record I found for Basil Edward Meek was on July 3, 1896. He was 64, born in Indiana, worked as an expressman, had lost his left eye and lived at 207 Larkin in San Francisco, California. He and Emma Ward Meek had at least three children: Netty A., Alice A., and Daisy E..
The Bazel and Eunice Meek family is enumerated on September 29, 1857 on a Minnesota State census. They are living at Owatonna in Steele County. The family includes: Bazel, 58, born in Kentucky, Eunice, 37, born in N.Y., Margaret Meek, 19, born in Indiana, Robert Meek, 13, born in Illinois, John C. Meek, 8, born in Illinois, Sarah Wishon, 8, born in Illinois, and Billy Meek, 1/12, born in Minnesota. Margaret Meek marries John Moon on February 1, 1858. Mary Jane Meek Moon is evidently deceased. Zeralda T. Moon, born about 1853, was evidently a daughter of John and Mary Jane Meek Moon.
A Henry County, Kentucky Deed ( Deed Book 33, Page 168), dated December 6, 1869, transfers land to James R. Erwin from the heirs of Basil Erwin, deceased. His heirs are his siblings and the children of his deceased siblings. The heirs listed are William Erwin, Joseph Erwin, Thomas Erwin, Harrison Erwin, Basil Meek, Squire Meek, Thomas Meek, Amanda Meek, Rachel Meek and Goodman Erwin. Squire Boone Erwin, Mary "Polly" Erwin Meek and Washington Erwin are siblings who are deceased at this date. Goodman Erwin is the only child of Squire Boone Erwin. Basil, Squire, Thomas, Amanda, and Rachel Meek are children of Mary "Polly" Erwin Meek. I wonder why Margaret and Robert J. Meek are not mentioned as heirs of Mary Erwin Meek as they are both listed on the 1870 census. A Jeremiah Robert Meek, 21, born in Illinois, laborer, residing at Placerville is listed on a voters list for El Dorado County, California on August 5, 1867.
A Bazel Meek is listed on the California Voter Register list in 1868 as being a resident of Nevada and El Dorado Counties. His age was 67, born in Kentucky, and was a farmer.
Bazil Meek, age 70, a miner born in Kentucky is listed on the 1870 census of Granby Township, Newton County, Missouri. Listed with him are Robert J. Meek, age 23, miner born in Illinois; John C. Meek, age 31, miner born in Illinois; and William, age 12, born in Minnesota. The family of Rachel Ann Meek Bixler is enumerated next door.
I found a note in the Neosho Missouri Genealogical Library that mentions; Meek, Squire Basil died in Joplin (Missouri) , Thursday July 9, 1874. His remains were brought to Granby and interred in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. Bazel Meek was a Justice of the Peace at the time of his death and the "Squire" name may refer to his title.
