WILLIAM HUDSON c1695-1730
By Ronny O. Bodine 19 July 2013
WILLIAM HUDSON was born, perhaps around 1695 in Westmoreland Co., Virginia, the son of Rush Hudson and his first wife.[1] His life was brief, perhaps 33 or 34 years, with little time to be noticed in the public life and only passing references in county records. Hudson likely lived all or part of his early life in Richmond County, Virginia until 1720, when King George County was formed from it. On 3 July 1717 in a court case in Richmond County, “The Presentment of the Grandjury against William Hudson of Hanover Parish for not going to Church for one month is dismist, no prosecution.”[2] In a King George County deed of 1 & 2 April 1723 from Edward Taylor to Archibald Allen, mention is made of the land bordering that of William Hudson.[3] On 2 Oct 1724, he appeared before the King George Co. Court to attest his signature on the will of John Franklin.[4] He probably died shortly before 6 March 1729/30 when administration on his estate was granted to his widow, Sarah Hudson, who posted bond in the sum of £100, with security by Rush Hudson.[5] On 3 April 1730, the inventory of his estate, appraised by Richard Tankersley, Samuel Wharton and Henry Head, was submitted to the court to be recorded.[6]
SARAH was William Hudson’s wife. Following his death she remarried, her new husband being Benjamin Settle, who also predeceased Sarah in 1752 and after whose death she remained a widow.[7] She died shortly before 2 Jan 1755 when her will of 9 Dec 1750 was proved in King George Co. Therein she named as heirs, son William Hudson, daughter Lucy Hudson and grandson William Allan.[8] But William and Lucy were not her only children. It was the will of her daughter Lucy Hudson, written 24 July 1756 and proved 2 Sept 1756 that named all of her siblings, brother William Hudson and sisters Ann Housley, Martha Peril and Elizabeth Allan, among other heirs.[9]
ISSUE OF WILLIAM AND SARAH HUDSON
1. LUCY HUDSON. Died unmarried between 24 July 1756, the date of her will and its probate on 2 Sept 1756 in King George Co., Virginia, naming her brother William Hudson and sisters Ann Housley [sic-Owsley], Martha Peril [sic=Pearl], and Elizabeth Allan.
2. WILLIAM HUDSON. By a bond of 16 Aug 1774, William and Abigail Hudson of Westmoreland Co. bind themselves to Samuel Kendall Jr. of King George Co. for £50 pending intailment of land in King George Co.[10]
3. MARTHA HUDSON. Married WILIAM PEARL before 1755. His will of 24 May 1785 was proved 28 July 1785 in Fauquier Co., Virginia.
4. ELIZABETH HUDSON. Married ALLAN. Her son William Allan, was an heir in the will of his grandmother, Sarah. On 22 Oct 1779, William Allan and Mary, his wife, of Culpepper Co., Virginia sold to Thomas Smith of King George Co. 98 ½ acres in Hanover Parish of King George Co. for £40, which was intailed to him by the will of Sarah Settle.[11] William Allan died shortly before 16 Sept 1799 when his will of 12 July 1799 was proved in Culpepper Co., Virginia.[12]
5. ANN HUDSON. Born c1715. Married twice, but the name of her first husband is unknown. She married 2ndly, THOMAS OWSLEY about 1732 or 1733. Her husband died 1750 and she was still living 24 July 1756. See the separate account of THOMAS OWSLEY.
[1] The first wife is not known by name. Rush Hudson died intestate in 1735. It was the 1760 will of his widow, subsequently the wife of Edward Turberville, wherein she named 7 surviving children, including son Rush, but not William Hudson, as he was dead. It is the fact that Rush Hudson served as security that connects the two men as brothers. Westmoreland County as William’s birthplace is where his father was known to be living at the time.
