Page 228. Special petition and commission. George Cross Jr of PC, seized of a parcel of land in PC called Orphans Gift, asked for a commission to examine witnesses to prove and perpetuate the memory of the bounds of the sd tract of land.
The request for commission was addressed to Page Court, before Peter Dent, Gent, and his associates, on the 4th Tuesday of Mar in the 31st year of our Dominion. The order for commission, consisting of people unrelated to the petitioner or to any contiguous proprietor, was issued on Dec 19, 1746, and named as commissioners, Messrs John Contee, James Beck, Rignal Odell, and Benjamin Hall of PG, Gent. The 4 commissioners met at the dwelling house of George Cross Jr on the sd land On Friday, Aug 22, 1746 to execute sd commission.
From sd Cross' house, we proceeded to a corn field, in possession of Abraham Clark, where there was a large stone about 100 yards westerly from the dwelling house of the sd Clark, at which place John Mullikin, aged about 43 years, declared that about 26-27 years ago, Luke Bonnet and this deponent cut down a bounded tree standing upon the knoll, where the sd stone now is, and that at the same time, there was a hickory sapling which had been cut and bent down, standing near the sd tree, and this deponent further says that somebody told him that it was the tree, that his father proved, and he thinks it was Thomas Prather.
At the same place, Luke Barnet, aged about 61 years, declared that about 26-27 years ago, he or some of his people cut down a bounded red oak which stood where the sd stone now is, or thereabouts, and that there had been several disputes about the sd tree before it was cut down, some for having it to be the beginning tree of the Orphans Gift, and some not, and that a year or two before, it was cut down, Daniel Danielson and Thomas Lucas were brought to the sd tree, in order to prove it, and they declared that they carried the chain when the Orphans Gift was laid out, and the tree that Colo. Beall carried them to, to begin at, was a bounded tree before that time, and that it stood farther to the northward than this place. and the tree. they then began at seemed to be a larger tree at that time, when this red oak was at the time of making these depositions, and this deponent further says that, at the time the sd red oak was cut down, there was a hickory sapling that stood near the sd tree which had been notched in and bent down, and further, that he had heard before that time that James Mullikin had sworn that the sd red oak was a bounded tree and he believes of the Orphans Gift, and that he, this deponent was presented for cutting down the sd red oak and the indictment was "squashed", and that after this,-Mr. Clement Hill came into Court and desired that the place might not be left without a memorial, for the tree affected some other lands that he was concerned in, and the Court ordered him, this deponent, to place a stone at the stump of the sd tree, which he did, and that this is the same stone.
At the same place, Morris Miles, aged upwards of 60 years, declared that he had heard that Luke Barnet was presented for cutting down a bounded tree, but that he never saw it, nor knew what tree it was.
At the same place, John Prather, aged near 39 years, after being upon the Viore Diore(?) , was interrogated whether he was interested in the sd boundary, he answered no, and further, what he knew in relation to the sd boundary, answered that he was present when James Mullikin proved a tree, which is where the sd stone now is, or thereabout, and he then heard him swear that the sd tree was a bounded treel of Orphans Gift, and further, that the same day, afd Mullikin swore to the tree, he rode behind his father to the sd Mullikin'S house, and that he heard the sd Mullikin tell this deponent's father, before they came to the tree, that the tree stood near the head of a draught that made out of the North East, and that when the sd tree was bounded, he, the sd Mullikin, chopped a hickory sapling, near the sd tree, bent it down and sat upon it.
At the same place, William Ray, aged about 62 years, declared that about 38 years ago, some person who he cannot rightly tell, but believes it was either Nathaniel Wickham, Luke Barnet, or Morris Miles, brought him to a bounded red oak, standing where the stone now is, or thereabout, and told him it was a bounded tree of a tract of land, but he has forgotten the name thereof, and that they also showed him a hickory sapling, which had been chopped in and bent down, near the sd tree, and told this deponent that James Mullikin chopped the sd sapling and sat down upon it.
Then George Cross desired to adjourn, for that he had further witnesses to offer, which were not present, and we adjourned until Sep 5, 1746, when we met at the afd stone where Colo. Edward Sprigg, aged near 49 years, declared that about 8 years ago, he was with Samuel Brashear Sr, decd, at this place, and believes that the stone now lays in the same place, and that at the same time, sd Samuel Brashears told that, that was the place where James Mullikin proved, the beginning tree of the Orphans Gift, to stand. Elizabeth Tydings Crump
Birth 1673, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, USA
Death 1719 (aged 45–46), Queen Anne's County, Maryland, USA
Burial Burial Details Unknown. Specifically: Buried in Crump Family Cemetery on her husband's land known as "Crump Forest" in Queen Anne's County, Maryland.
Elizabeth Tydings, daughter of Richard Tydings (1638-1686) and Charity (__?__) Tydings, of Ann Arundel Co., MD, married Robert Crump I, son of William and Frances (Mountney) Crump of Queen Ann's Co., MD (See source #1 below and attached page 362). There is a widely propagated genealogical error involving the husband of Elizabeth Tydings which contends she married John Belt, son of Humphrey Belt and secondly, John Lamb. Another genealogical error involving the Tydings family concerns the maiden name of Richard Tydings' wife, Charity, claiming it to be "Sparrow" (See FAG memorial Charity Sparrow Tydings for an example of this PROPAGATED ERROR. Recent studies have shown that true believers of an idea confronted with incontrovertible facts to the contrary will not change their opinion especially if an agenda is involved). Richard Tydings' wife WAS named Charity but her surname is unknown. That her given name was Charity is gleaned from the Quaker marriage record of their son, John, where he is listed as the son of "Richard and Charity". The Tydings family and the Sparrow family literature is replete with the inaccurate statement that Richard Tydings married Charity Sparrow, the daughter of Thomas Sparrow, Sr. (1615-1659). There simply is NO documented evidence that Thomas Sparrow, Sr. had a daughter named Charity. See Thomas Sparrow, Sr.'s FAG memorial #124905698 for a full discussion and proof of this statement.
Various publications over the past many decades have incorrectly listed Richard Tydings' daughter, Elizabeth, as being identical to Elizabeth, wife of John Belt. Innumerable family trees published on Ancestry.com have propagated this error. That Richard Tydings' daughter, Elizabeth, actually married Robert Crump I is accepted presently and is proven by the following:
Richard Tydings of Anne Arudel Co., MD purchased the 375 acre tract of land named "Nangimie" on 02 Oct 1685 from George Thompson of St. Mary,s Co., MD. (See attached land purchase).
"Richard Tydings of Anne Arundel Co., MD left his will dated 02 Feb 1687 (Maryland Prerogative Court Wills 6, p40, without probate entry) in which he bequeathed a 375 acre tract (called "Nanjomie") in Baltimore Co. to his daughters, Charity and Elizabeth Tydings. On 25 June 1719, Robert Crump I (1673-1748) and his wife, Elizabeth (Tydings) Crump, of Queen Anne's Co., MD, sold 187.5 acres, their half of "Nanjomie", to Phillip Thomas, "of which Robert was seized in right of his wife" (Baltimore Co., MD Deed Bk. TR #DS, pp 47-51).
On 12 Dec 1750, Charity (Tydings) Sellman, "one of the daughters and devisees of Richard Tidings" (and widow of William Sellman), sold to Thomas Harrison all right and claim to one moiety or half part (187.5 acres) of a tract called "Nanjemy" (Nanjomie), the whole tract containing 375 acres. (Baltimore Co., MD Land Records TR#D:107-108, FHL microfilm 0,013,330) (See attached "Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia, 1607-1624/5" by John Frederick Dorman, Vol. I, 2004, p362, Footnote #50, which confirms the above documentation). (FYI: John Frederick Dorman's book is a seminal genealogy reference book which is accepted by the Jamestowne Society and all other hereditary organizations for which its information is pertinent).
To clarify, the 25 June 1719 land transfer mentioned above stated that Robert and Elizabeth (Tydings) Crump (I) sold the half part of the tract known as "Nanjomie" that was the right of his wife, Elizabeth (Tydings) Crump. Elizabeth's right to the land would have been from it having been her one half of the tract (Nanjomie) willed to her and her sister, Charity, in their father's, Richard Tydings, will dated 02 Feb 1687. Therefore, the Elizabeth who first married John Belt, and secondly John Lamb, and died testate in 1737 as Elizabeth Lamb was NOT the daughter of Richard Tydings of the 02 Feb 1687 will. Unfortunately for her descendants, the identity (maiden name) of Elizabeth, wife of John Belt and John Lamb, remains unknown.
In 1748 Phillip Thomas of Anne Arundel County sold the 187.5 acres, the "undivided moiety" of the tract "Nanjomie" he had acquired from Robert and Elizabeth (Tyding) Crump, to Thomas Harrison (Baltimore Deeds TR#C:89-91; and TR#C:99-101, FHL microfilm 0,013,330). Thus, Thomas Harrison owned the entire 375 acres of "Nanjomie".
The inventory of Robert Crump, I's estate taken 11 March 1748 in Queen Anne's County was signed by "next of kin" Preposia Bostick (Robert Crump inventory, MD Inventories 41:209-210, FHL microfilm 0,012,876). A Preciosia Crump married Samuel Bostock 14 Jan 1730 at St. Luke's Parish, Queen Anne's County (Ref: Source #1 below, p363). Repeated use of the name Preciosia/Pretiotia among the Crump family is added evidence that Richard Tydings daughter, Elizabeth, married Robert Crump as Elizabeth's sister and third daughter of Richard Tydings was also named Pretiotia. This name is found spelled in various ways, i.e. Pretitia/Pretosia/Prelitia/Preciosia. This daughter of Richard Tydings married Dutton Lane (1665-1726), a wealthy planter in Anne Arundel Co., MD, about 1693.
Robert and Elizabeth (Tydings) Crump, I had the following children:
NOTE: For an example of the propagation of the misinformation concerning the surname of Elizabeth (Tydings) Crump's mother as "Sparrow", see her mother's name attached to this memorial, e. g. "Charity (Sparrow) Tydings". In the face of proof to the contrary, maintaining that Thomas Sparrow, Sr. or Thomas Sparrow, Jr. had a daughter named "Charity Sparrow" removes the option of ignorance of the facts and indicates a genealogical agenda of some sort. For further discussion of the facts in this case see the memorial dedicated to Thomas Sparrow, Sr.

[Also refer to the memorial of Elizabeth Tydings Crump, wife of Robert Crump I for a compete discussion of why there is resistance to accept that Robert Crump I was the husband of Elizabeth Tydings).
On 10 Jan 1700, Robert and Elizabeth Crump (I) sold a tract on Coursegall Creek in Chester Hundred (Kent Co. MD, Deed Bk. "M", p110).
On Aug 1702, Robert and Elizabeth Crump (I) sold James Heath their moiety of 300 acres, "Crump's Forest", which had been patented by his father (William Crump), but bought it back, 16 Nov 1708 (Kent Co., MD Deed Bk. JD#1, pp34-35; Queen Anne's Co., MD Deed Bk. ET#A, p34).
On 28 June 1715 Robert and Elizabeth Crump (I) sold 200 acres of "Crump's Forest" to James William. Jr. (Queen Anne's Co., MD Deed Bk. IK #A, p38).
On 28 June 1718, Robert and Elizabeth Crump (I) sold "Crumpton" to Darby Mahar (Queen Anne's Co., MD Deed Bk. IK #A, p188).
The recent correction of the 100 year old genealogical error concerning Elizabeth Tydings Crump, Robert Crump, I's wife, is FULLY covered in her memorial and on the memorial of Thomas Sparrow, Sr. The widely propagated error misidentified her husband as John Belt, son of Humphrey Belt. (See also attached "Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia, 1607-1624/5" by John Frederick Dorman, Vol. I, 4th Ed., 2004, p362, Footnote #50, for a brief explanation).

A Preciosia Crump married Samuel Bostock 14 Jan. 1730 at St. Luke's Parish, Queen Anne's Co., MD (Ref: F. Edward Wright, Maryland Eastern Shore Vital Records 1726-1750, (Silver Springs, MD: Family Line Publications, 1983), p48). Use of the name Preciosia/Pretiotia among the Crump family is added evidence that Richard Tydings daughter, Elizabeth, married Robert Green Crump (I).
Robert and Elizabeth (Tydings) Crump, I had the following children:
NOTE: The middle names of Robert Crump I (1673-1748) and Robert Crump I (1706-1770) aren’t found in the genealogical records as far I can determine but records concerning Robert Crump III (1745-1823), the son of Robert Crump II, have injected an interesting development. Some of Robert Crump III’s records refer to him as Robert Crump, Sr. when he and his son, Robert "Green" Crump, Jr.’s (aka IV), names are in the same record. This would logically lead one to believe that Robert Crump, Jr. could also be referred to as Robert Crump IV which would mean that Robert Crump I, II and III would share the middle name of “Green”. In addition, Barton Guess Crump (1814-1889), son of Silas Crump (1775-1834) named a son, Henry "Green" Crump (1847-1901). Also, Martha (Crump) Yeargin (1808-1884), daughter of Robert Green Crump IV, named a son Simeon "Green" Yeargin (1844-1917). John Wesley Crump (1854-1943), son of Robert Green Crump IV, named a son "Green" Crump (1896-1915).

On 25 June 1719, Robert Crump and his wife, Elizabeth (Tydings) Crump, of Queen Anne's Co., MD, sold 187.5 acres, half of "Nanjomie", to Phillip Thomas, "of which Robert was seized in right of his wife" (Baltimore Co., MD Deed Bk. TR #DS, pp47-51) (Ref: "Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia, 1607-1624/5" by John Frederick Dorman, Vol. I, 4th Ed., 2004, p362, Footnote #50).
The inventory of Robert Crump, I's estate taken 11 March 1748 in Queen Anne's Co., MD and was signed by "next of kin" Preposia Bostick (Ref: Robert Crump inventory, MD Inventories 41:209-210, FHL microfilm 0,012,876). A Preciosia Crump married Samuel Bostock 14 Jan. 1730 at St. Luke's Parish, Queen Anne's Co., MD (Ref: F. Edward Wright, Maryland Eastern Shore Vital Records 1726-1750, (Silver Springs, MD: Family Line Publications, 1983), p48). Use of the name Preciosia/Pretiotia among the Crump family is added evidence that Richard Tydings daughter, Elizabeth, married Robert Green Crump (I).
Robert and Elizabeth (Tydings) Crump, I had the following children:
1) Robert Crump II (see below).
2) Mary Crump, m. 1) 10 Jun 1719 Abraham Montague (St. Luke's Parish, Queen Anna Co., MD, Register), 2) (__?__) Godfree (Based on the assumption she is the Mary Godfree who with Precosia Bostick signed the next of kin on the inventory of Robert Crump (II), 11 March 1748/49-Maryland Prerogative Court Inventories41, p209)
3) Preciosia Crump, m. 14 Jan 1730/1 Samuel Bostick of Queen Anne's Co., MD. (St. Luke's Parish, Queen Anna Co., MD, Register; See also source #1 below, page 363.

Birth 1706, Queen Anne's County, Maryland, USA
Death 1770 (aged 63–64), Pittsylvania County, Virginia, USA
Burial Burial Details Unknown. Specifically: Buried in Crump Family Cemetery in Pittsylvania County, Virginia on his 400 acre tract located on Green Creek which emptied in South Mayo River, to Dan River, to Roanoke River.
Robert Crump II was the son of Robert Crump I (1673-1748) and Elizabeth (Tydings) Crump (1673-1719) [Ref: "Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia, 1607-1624/5" by John Frederick Dorman, Vol. I, 4th Ed., 2004, pp362-363].
On 28 May 1731, Robert Crump II married Jane (Lowder) Lazenby, daughter of Charles and Joane (__?__) Lowder and widow of John Lazenby, at St. Luke's Parish (Ref: St. Luke's Parish, Queen Anne's Co., MD, Register).
By 1752, Robert and Jane (Lazenby) Crump II had moved from Queen Anne's County, Maryland with family and relatives to the part of Halifax County, VA which became Pittsylvania Co., VA in 1767. To substantiate this move, a 1752 order in Halifax Co., VA directed that Robert Crump II [two tithables in his household], Charles Lowder, Charles Lessenby (Lazenby) and Daniel Lessenby (Lezenby), among others, be added to the general list of tithables.
On 18 Sept 1753, Robert Crump (II), William Crump (son of Robert Crump II and brother of Robert Crump III), David Lessenby, Edward Lowder and Charles Lessenby were added to the tithable list of Joseph Terry (Ref: Halifax Co. Pleas [Orders] 1, pp62,185, order, 20 Dec 1752) NOTE: It appears that David Lessenby and Charles Lessenby, may have been the sons of Jane (Lazenby) Crump and her deceased first husband, John Lazenby.
In 1754, Robert II was on the tithables list of Halifax Co., VA and was recorded as living "in the forks of the River Roanoke". NOTE: The only location that seems to fit that description is where the "North Fork" and the "South Fork" of the Roanoke River join at Lafayette, in present day Montgomery Co., VA.
The Halifax County, Virginia, Court Orders 1758-1759, Plea Book 2, Part 2, p. 119 reads: August Court 1759, John Parr (Sr.), assignee of Robert Crump (II), assignee of Mathew Read who was assignee of Robert Read, Plt, vs. Adam Loving, Deft., In Debt. For reasons appearing, suit dismissed. (NOTE: John Parr, Sr. was the father of Mary Parr whom Robert Green Crump III would marry in 1770.)
Pittsylvania Co. VA was formed from Halifax Co. in 1767. Robert Crump II patented 400 acres of land in Pittsylvania Co., VA on 30 May 1767 located on Green Creek which flows into the South Mayo River, then into the Dan River, then into the Roanoke River. (Ref: Pittsylvania County Entry Book 1737-70, p408). His land was only a few miles from the 400 acres of land owned by John Parr, Sr. (Robert Crump III's future father-in-law) located on the Little Fork of Spoon Creek which also empties into the South Mayo River. Also living in the area was William Crump (mentioned above), the brother of Robert Crump III who was living on Crooked Creek which also flows into the South Mayo River. Robert Crump II was tithable in Pittsylvania Co. in 1767 and 1770 (Ref: "The History of Pittsylvania County, Virginia (Lynchburg) by Maud Carter Clement, 1929, p282).
Also in 1767, Robert Crump II and his son, Robert Crump III were added to the tax rolls of Pittsylvania Co. This means that Robert Crump III, son of Robert Crump II, was born on or before 1750-51.
In 1770, Robert Crump II and his son, Robert Crump (III), were recorded on the Tithables List by Archelaus Hughes in Pittsylvania Co., VA. John Parr, Sr. was also on this Tithables List. NOTE: To be "Tithable", one must 16 Y/O or older.
The children of Robert and Jane (Lazenby) Crump II were:
