James Gentry, the 3rd son of Benejah Gentry and the Grandson of Nicholas Gentry II, was born in Albemarle County, Virginia on 15 October 1786. He married Elizabeth Tooley, daughter of William and Hannah Tooley, in Albermarle County, Virginia on the 4th of August 1808.
James served as a private soldier in the 4th Regiment of the Virginia Militia during the War of 1812. For his service he received 160 acres of bounty land in Kentucky. He moved his family from Albemarle County, Virginia to a place known as Turkey Neck Bend on the Kentucky (north) side of the Cumberland River in what eventually became Monroe County, Kentucky. His land claim was located near the community of Meshack. With the help of the 10 slaves, which he brought with him from Virginia, he was able to clear a sizable area of rich bottom land and continued to purchase and develop which eventually became a very productive and valuable farming operation.
Over the years that he lived in Monroe County, Kentucky, he became one of the wealthiest of land owners in the area. According to the 1850 Federal Census of Monroe County he owned 13 slaves. By 1860 he owned 20 slaves, and 17 slaves just prior to the beginning of the Civil War. Following his death, on August 15th, 1861, it took 2 years to settle his estate, so vast were his holdings and so complicated were his dealings with his neighbors. His slaves were freed at the time of President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation as Kentucky was a Union State.
His children, for the most part, remained in Monroe County. His olders son, William, eventually inherited the family farm, as was the tradition for family land transfers. William, his wife Elizabeth (Webb), and a number of his children are buried in the family cemetery, in a small hardwood grove on the old homestead. Many of William's children were buried in the Webb Family cemetery, which is located on the Myatt Farm near the Sulphur Lick Community in Monroe County.
The only child that did not stay in Monroe County to raise his family was Benjamin, who married Elizabeth Ellen "Emily" Martin, the daughter of Joseph Martin and Dianna Spicer Wilcox Martin. They moved to Hart County, Kentucky shortly after their marriage. At the time of the birth of their first child Benjamin was 20 and "Emily" was only 14 years of age. All of their children were born in Hart County.
Two of James Gentry's daughters married first cousins. Nancy married Walter Carr Gentry and Jane married Benejah Gentry, both son's of Willian and Lucy (Carr) Gentry, who resided in Dickson County, Tennessee. James Gentry and William Gentry were half brothers. William's mother was Elizabeth (Austin) Gentry, who was Benejah's first wife. James's mother was Annie (Jones) Gentry, Benejah's second wife. Although they were half brothers, they grew up as though they were full brothers, being only 7 years difference in age.
Family tradition has it it that the family land, after the death of James's son, William, eventually passed onto one of William's sons. This son (which son is not known), must not have had a desire to continue farming as his forefathers had, for it is said that he sold the land for $100 and a bottle of whisky, then went west. never to be heard from again. Possibly, the land, having been farmed for over 50 years, without the benefit of modern fertilizers, was depleted and was possibly not worth much.
The children of James and Elizabeth (Tooley) Gentry, who have stayed in and around Monroe County, Kentucky, have multiplied many fold. The Gentry name has been a part of Monroe County for nearly 200 years. In 1991, while on a family history trip to Monroe County, I found 28 Gentry Families in the Monroe County telephone directory. Many were descendants of James Gentry, slaves of James Gentry who kept the name, or of descendants of Samuel Gentry (son of Nicholas I and Lucy (Cornelius) Gentry, who's descendants migrated to the Mt. Herman Community of Monroe County, by way of North Carolina and Tennessee in about 1833.

Death     Aug 1828 (aged 37), Monroe County, Tennessee, USA
Burial     Ooltewah Cemetery, Ooltewah, Hamilton County, Tennessee, USA
His burial place is unknown at this time. He died at Monroe County, Tennessee near Philadelphia and might be interred there, but I have placed him in this cemetery where his wife may have died and been buried.
Edward was a son of Robert Watkins and Selah "Celia" Bryan(t).
He was born and raised at Wilkes County, North Carolina.
He was a school teacher and was considered to be "a worthy, estimable gentleman, with a fine business capacity", see The Cleveland Genealogy.
He moved with his parents to Oglethorpe Co., Georgia. He later moved to Wartrace, Tennessee, and afterward lived in Monroe Co., Tennessee, near Philadelphia.
He married Fanny Cleveland on 15 June 1812 at Rocky Hill, in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. They removed shortly thereafter to Monroe County, Tennessee where their children were born. He died near Philadelphia, Tennessee, before the birth of their last child, leaving a widow and eight children under the age of 16.
His widow Fanny married second Caleb Isaac Parker on 28 September 1835 near Philadelphia, Tennessee. Caleb was a widower of Elizabeth Sanders (1789-1830) having several children.
Fanny and Caleb had four children of their own children. Perhaps as early as 1850 they moved to Ooltewah where they were enumerated in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 US Censuses.
Caleb died there in 1870. Fanny died there in 1884.
