Birth 1733, Hanover County, Virginia, USA
Death 3 Dec 1830 (aged 96–97), Albemarle County, Virginia, USA
Burial Burial Details Unknown
Born in Hanover Co., VA, 1733, and his will was proved in Albermarle Co., January 1831. He lived for a few years in Louisa Co., but finally bought a home on Biscuit Run, three miles south of Charlottesville, VA., in Albemarle Co., in the year 1764. He married first, a Miss Austin; second a Miss Jones of Culpepper Co. He was a successful planter and owned a number of negro slaves. He was a man of fine character, well beloved by his neighbors, a leading member of the Baptist Church, and very active and zealous in religious work. He could read his Bible from memory, and always lead the singing in church. In 1817 he transferred all his property to his son Robert, although his death did not occur until 1831, at the great age of 98. He had six children by first wife. (includes listing of 14 children) ("The Gentry Family in America" by Richard Gentry, 1909; published by Grafton Press, NY)
Departed this life of Friday, the 3rd of December, in Albemarle County, Mr. Benajah Gentry, in the 98th year of his age. He has left an aged and affectionate wife, many children, relations and friends to bemoan his loss. He was a professor of religion for 50 years, and acted in the capacity of deacon in the Baptist Church, at Pine Grove, until prevented by the infirmities of age. He was not one of those professors who barely have the name; but by a pious walk and godly conversation, adorned the doctrine of his profession. Reader, could you have witnessed his last struggles - hear his many prayers offered to his God, in whom his faith was unshaken, and heard him call on the pious Brother who was present, 'to help him to praise God forever and forever.' (which were the last words he was heard to utter) - methinks it would have been sufficient to convince the stoutest heart, that his hope would carry him through the valley and shadow of death, in which he feared no evil. He was at times tortured with the most excruciating pains for upwards of a month; yet he expressed in all his conversation an entire resignation to the divine will. He was a most striking example of that faith which kindles love in the heart, and produces the sweet fruits of meekness, gentleness - and every Christian grace and virtue. He is lost to his pious wife and children on earth, but they are consoled in the belief, that his sanctified spirit rests with unutterable joy in the work of love, there they will soon meet him, to join with him, to swell the chorus of perfected praise forever.

"There has been too much controversy about the early Tunstall's in Virginia to undertake to write about them accurately. Mrs. Phillip W. Hiden has written an excellent review of a book by Whit Norris entitled ''The First Tunstalls in Virginia'' (59V 367-370) (see also 14V -444). This book is very excellent in its presentation of later generations.
Therefore, this account starts with Colonel Richard Tunstall of King and Queen, who was born about 1700, inasmuch as he was Deputy County Clerk of Essex from 1721 to 1724. He was residing in that County in 1724 (9V-436). In 1733-35 he was a Justice of the County Court of King and Queen. (Exec. Journals of Council, Vol. 4-299). From 1741 to 1757 he was Clerk of the County Court of King and Queen. (Stratton Major Parish Vestry Book, pp. 42, 116). Also he was appointed Clerk of Committee of Propositions and Grievances in the House of Burgesses, Sept. 1744.
In the above Parish Register he is referred to as ''Captain, Major, and Colonel'' of King and Queen in sequence from 1741to 1757. He was elected to the House of Burgesses in 1766, succeeding John Robinson. (B. J. 1766-69, p. 4). He served 1n this capacity during 1767 and 1768. He was Chairman of the Committee of Safety in 1714 for King and Queen. His son-in-law, George Brooks, was Vice-chairman, his son John was Clerk, and his son Richard and nephew Tunstall Banks were members.
Col. Richard Tunstall married Ann, daughter of Leonard Hill of Essex County, whose will dated May 12, 1728, proven May 1728, mentions his daughter Ann Tunstall. Ann Hill, born in 1708, first married Dr. James Walker in 1724, as evidenced by the Bible records of her grandson, James W. Maury (27V-376). Dr. James Walker was born March 7, 1692. His children were: Mary Walker, born Nov. 22, 1724, married James Maury, Nov. 11, 1843; died March 20, 1798; and Leonard James Walker, born Nov. 1726, died May 1733. (Id.)
Colonel Tunstall lived on the Mattapony River, and while he and his wife were away from home his two young daughters went wading 1n the river and were drowned. He died before 1782, for the King and Queen tax rolls for that year show that his estate consisted of 1203 acres of which Richard Tunstall, Jr., later received 665 acres in the 1783 rolls. If Col. Tunstall left a will, it perished in the destruction of the King and Queen records.
The most authoritative list of his children was made by his granddaughter• Lucy Tunstall Williams and confirmed by her son, our old friend John Buxton Williams in a letter dated Jan. 27, 1882. (14V437). His statements about other families have been proven correct. (See 17 C - 306; H. S. F., Vol., p. 343.)
Mrs. Williams said: "My grandfather (the said Richard Tunstall) had five sons and five daughters; their names were: RICHARD; LEONARD; THOMAS; JOHN; and my beloved father, WILLIAM; the daughters were: ELIZABETH; CATHERINE; ANN; HESTER; and Aunt BROOKE'. Aunt Brooke was HANNAH TUNSTALL who married George Brooke. (14V437)
William Tunstall, son of Colonel Richard and the beloved father of Mrs. Williams, was born ca. 1736 in King and Queen. He attended Dr. Robertson's School in King and Queen 1760-61 (33V291). He moved to Halifax Co., Va., where in June 1767, he became the first County Clerk of the County of Pittsylvania.* He lived in the western part of the county and on Jan. 1, 1777, his plantation fell in Henry County when it was formed from Pittsylvania. He therefore became ineligible to hold the Clerks office in Pitts. Notwithstanding his ineligibility, he was re-elected Clerk of Pitts, which office he held until 1791.
He was Major of the Pittsylvania County Militia, Nov. 23, 1773 (0. V. 2, p. 275). He became Lt. Colonel Sept. 27, 1775 (19V307). On June 20, 1778, he became County Lieutenant of Pittsylvania, which office he resigned March 23, 1780. (9V 266-415).
Colonel William Tunstall married Elizabeth (Betsy) Barker, born ca. 1745, daughter of Thomas Barker and his wife, Mrs. Ferebee Savage Pugh. On her mother's side she was descended from Ancient Planter Thomas Savage, who arrived at Jamestown Jan. 8, 1608 (A. P. P. 240); on her father's side from Richard Warren of the Mayflower (Index 2065). The date of her marriage 1s unknown, but it was long before the will of John Blagg of Henry County was probated, for John Blagg in his will dated Feb. 22, 1781, bequeathed to ''My Godson, William Tunstall, son of William Tunstall a widowed negro woman and her children. ''If said William died then to Peyton Randolph Tunstall'' unto Thomas Barker Tunstall my sorrel mare. (W.B. 1-1779-99, p. 49).
Thomas Barker, Betsy's father, was appointed Provincial Agent of North Carolina in England in 1761, and Betsy must have accompanied him inasmuch as her portrait was painted by the celebrated English portrait painter, William Hogarth, who was never in America.
In 1791, Colonel William Tunstall resigned his offices 1n Pittsylvania and Henry Counties and moved to Bertie County, N. c. The exact date of his death is not known, but he was plaintiff or defendant in several suits in Henry County, and at the April Session 1793, three of them were abated by the death of Col. William Tunstall. (M1nutes 6, pp. 21-87).
The will of Betsy Barker Tunstall was dated June 17, 1803, and probated November Term 1803, in Bertie County. In it she mentions nine of her ten children and a ''Granddaughter Ruth V. Tunstall, daughter of Edmund Tunstall of Virginia.'' Ruth was the daughter of Betsy's daughter Ann (Nancy) who had married her first cousin, Edmund Tunstall."7
; From "Descendants of William BANKS": (p. 6):
"Tunstall Banks was the eldest son who inherited under the will of the first William Banks the estate "Mantapike" in King & Queen. In February 1759, he had its entail docked and soon after sold it to George Brooke, husband of his first cousin, Hannah Tunstall (Hening's Stat., viii. 474; Bagby's Hist., 51).
About 1765-7, he was a Justice of King & Queen.
In April 1767, he was defendant in a suit by his kinsmen Tunstall and Brooke.
On 12 December 177 4, he was elected to the Committee of Safety and probably rendered other Revolutionary service.
In 1782, he was taxed with 230 acres in King & Queen and himself appraised some lands on that tax roll.
He married Sarah (maiden name unknown) and left (unident fied) descendants.

At some time prior to 1758, Manatpike had passed to his son, Tunstall Banks, who sold the entire plantation to George Brooke in 1764. Tunstall Banks then moved to his plantation in King William County.
He had been named in the Commission of Justices of King & Queen County and on the Committee of Safety.

; See Parker Wood Family Tree by Rachel Potter for a proposal regarding the possible ancestry of John Banks through Tunstall Banks.
Rachel leaves open two key possibilities:
1. That John might have been the son of Lynn Banks and Sarah Proctor, but she mentions a DNA test that adds credibility to his father having been Tunstall: "Rachel has DNA matches with descendents of Baylor Banks (1755-1815), who could have been John's brother. Or match is from somewhere else?" N.B. Baylor Banks was a son of Tunstall.
2. Tunstall Banks May have married twice, or his wife's name is confused:
m1 Sarah Jane Richards
m2 Sarah Baylor?8 He witnessed the death of William Banks in 1748 at Virginia, USA; "William Bankes of King and Queen count (will dated November 10, 1709), had issue, Ralph Banks, who died about 1735, leaving issue William Banks (Hening, V., p.214). the last-mentioned William Banks died in 1748, leaving issue, Tunstall Banks, his eldest son and heir, living in 1759 (Hening, VII. p. 294). Mile Banks and John Banks were members of the Virginia Company." (p. 234.)9,10 Capt. Tunstall Banks was "Justices of the Peace of Colonial Virgina, 1757-1775"

William Banks was born before 1643 at Corfe Castle, Dorsetshire, England; per Ray H Banks' Report on William Bankes:
"There is one tradition reported by James William Banks of Virginia. He was a William Bankes descendant from part of the family that lived continuously in Virginia and was born in 1849. He indicated there were multiple brothers from his family who came to America according to his family's tradition. (Reba Fitzpatrick Lea in her 1945 book, The Lea Family in Nelson County, Virginia, p. 80, based on a 1934 interview with James.) This tradition is seemingly incompatible with another tradition among the descendants of William's grandson Thomas. This latter tradition claims William was a son of Sir John Bankes of Keswick, Cumbria, and Corfe Castle, Dorsetshire, but as mentioned above, the Sir John Bankes family has an entirely different genetic profile."3,4 He was born in 1643 at Alkham (prob.), co. Kent, England; Parker Wood Family Tree says b. 1643, prob. Alkham, Kent, England or was it VA?1 He married Mary Tunstall, daughter of Richard Tunstall and Mary Savage, in 1680.3
William Banks died after 11 October 1709 at King and Queen Co., Virginia, USA; Date of will.5
William Banks died before 10 November 1709 at King and Queen Co., Virginia, USA; Date of probate of will.3
His estate was probated on 10 November 1709 at Virginia (now), USA.3
