With Edmund Dudley he was in charge of King Henry VII's taxation system and both became unpopular. In 1504 Richard Empson was knighted and became high steward of the Cambridge University as well as chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. After the death of Henry VII both Sir Richard Empson and Edmund Dudley were imprisoned on orders of King Henry VIII. They were charged with the crime of constructive treason and convicted at Northampton in October 1509. On 17 or 18 August 1510 he was beheaded."²
