     Samuel Brady Nixon
Samuel Brady Nixon was born in Pennsylvania October 9, 1847; died April 28, 1914 at his home near Creola, O., aged 66 years, 6 months and nineteen days. He was married twice. His first wife, Sally Wadsworth, preceding him to the great beyond 29 years ago. To this union five children, three sons and two daughters were born. Irene, the oldest, died 13 years ago. In 1886 he was married to Lutheria Wyman. To this union one son was born. The widow and children, 4 brothers, 2 sisters and a number of grandchildren, with many relatives and friends mourn his death. Early in his youth he was converted, confessed Christ and joined the congrgation of the U. B. church at Mt. Zion, where he remained a faithful and active member for several years, later transfering his membership to the Pleasant Valley U. B. church. For many years he was a class leader and superintendent of the Pleasant Valley church and Sunday school. He was a man of kind disposition, a loving heart and an example of upright living. He was a faithful and affectionate husband, a kind and loving father. Those that knew him best loved him most. During the long interval of his affliction during many times of which he suffered such pain as few of us know, no word of complaint ever passes his lips. He bore his affliction with fortitude and bravery. Among his last words when asked about his great perspiration, he said, "This is nothing compared to what our great Savior suffered. He sweat great drops of blood." On an occasion a few days before his death he realized that the end was
near. Speaking of a son, Frank, living in California, and who had started home, he said: "If I am gone when Frank comes tell him to live right and meet me in heaven." The funeral was held from the Pleasant Valley U. B. church, Friday, May first, interment being made in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery. The funeral was the first ever conducted in the Pleasant Valley U. B. church. Rev. J. C. McLaughlin, of Logan, a former pastor of the church, officiated, assisted by Rev. J. S. Turben, the present pastor.

Civil War Union Army Soldier. He served during the Civil War as a Private in Company B, 73rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. During the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 2, 1863), he was wounded in the right hip and side during skimishing with the Confederates, and lay in the no-man's land between the Union position on Cemetery Hill and the Rebel's hold on the town. At night his cries of pain were such that it inspired Private Richard Enderlin to crawl out during the constant firing between the two forces, drag Private Nixon back most of the way, then stand up with the wounded man in tow and dash the final distance to safty. This act won Richard Enderlin a instant promotion to Sergeant, and a Medal of Honor 34 years later. Despite his rescue, Private Nixon's wounds proved to be mortal, and he died in the XI Corps Hospital seven days later. His great-grandson, Richard Millhouse Nixon, would become the 37th President of the United States. (bio by: Russ Dodge)

     p. 146: "Our own village of German Valley is situated on the Logan tract of 1,666 2-3 acres, surveyed to James Logan on the 12th of May, 1713 ... This tract was all bought by, or at least the deeds were given at about the same time, 1749, to six purchases, John Peter Scharpentstein, Philip Weise, Tunis (Anthony) Trimmer, William Welsch, Leonard Neighbor and Matthias Trimmer."
     p. 148: "Tunis Trimmer bought the farm next to Philip Weise of 315 acres for ? 150 ($400), 30th May, 1750 ... Tunis was the son of John, or Hunterdon Co., and the brother of Matthias of German Valley. He died 1754. His will [Trenton, Lib 8, fol. 77], dated 7th November, probated 21st December, 1754, names wife Elisabeth, and children: Paul, the oldest; Mary, who perhaps married 2d December 1768; and Anthony. Thomas Faircloe, who was appointed, Nov. 1st, 1770, the guardian of the son Anthony, may have married the widow Elisabeth and not ... the daughter of Tunis."
     p. 151: "Matthias Trimmer bought the farm next to Leonard Neighbor, the last one of the Logan tract. He paid ? 160 ($427) for 338 1/2 acres, of which he was in actual possession, 30 May, 1750 ... It was divided in 1793 between his sons John, who received 220 acres, and David; who received 110 acres ... Matthias was the oldest son of John Trimmer, who came with his brother from Germany or Holland to America. The brother and his family cannot be traced. All of this name in Morris and Hunterdon counties are descendants of John. He probably arrived in ship Davy at Philadelphia on the 35th of October, 1738. He and his son Matthias were naturalized by act of Assembly in 1744. He had twelve children by two wives, nine sons and three daughters. Four of his sons settled in the valley. Besides Matthias, William settled east of Middle Valley and had one son Conrad; Tunis on the Hager property, and Nicholas near Parker. George, Harbert and John settled in Amwell township, Hunterdon Co., where their descendants are still to be found.4
