Courier-Express Niagara Falls Bureau Niagara Falls, June 12 - Four young men received a fright and a duckingyesterday afternoon when their sailboat capsized in the choppy NiagaraRiver midway between Buckhorn Island and the foot of 74th Street in theLaSalle section. Thrown into the chilly water fully clothed, the men escaped a moreserious fate when Russel McFarland, 310 77th Street, who was cruising near the scenein a speed boat, noticed their predicament and sped to the rescue. The rescued were Hugh Reid, 23, of 134 62d Street; : LaVern Shofstohl,22, of 2249 Ontario Avenue; Harold MacIntosh, 23, of 519 Cedar Avenue,and Arthur McGillivray, 24, of 149 71st Street. Mr. McFarland, who was pleasure cruising on the river said he noticed thesailboat attempting to tack in the stiff wind, when suddenly it turnedover on its side and tossed the men into the water. They were all goodswimmers, he said, and swam back He took the drenched sailing enthusiast aboard and towed their sailboatback to shore near 68th Street. During the towing process the unluckycraft struck a rock and a hole was gouged in the bottom. In the meantime a call for help had been put in to police, and the policerescue boat, piloted by Larry Pendergast and bearing Patrolman NickolasJankowski, rushed to the rescue. When they arrived, however, the men weresafely ashore.
