     ; "Henry de Beauchamp, 6th earl, K.G. This nobleman having, before he had completed his nineteenth year, tendered his services for the defence of the Duchy of Acquitaine, was created by charter dated 2 April, 1444, Premier Earl of England, and his lordship obtained, at the same time permission for himself and his heirs male to wear a golden coronet about his head, in the presence of the king and elsewhere. In three days after he was advanced to the dignity of Duke of Warwick, with precedence immediately after the Duke of Norfolk, and before the Duke of Buckingham: which extraordinary mark of royal favour so displeased the latter nobleman, that an act of parliament was subsequently passed to appease his jealousy, declaring that from 2 December, then next ensuing, the two dukes should take place of each other alternately year about, but with precedency of the first year to the Duke of Warwick. After which, his Grace of Warwick had a grant in reversion, upon the death of the Duke of Gloucester, of the Isles of Guernsey, Jersey, Serke, Erme, and Alderney, for the annual rent of a rose; also the hundred and manor of Bristol, for £60 a-year, with all the royal castles and manors in the Forest of Dene, for £100 per annum: and he was shortly before his death crowned King of the Isle of Wight, by the hand of Henry VI. himself. His grace m. in the life-time of his father, when but ten years old, and then called Lord Despencer, Cicily, dau. of Richard Nevil, Earl of Salisbury, whose portion was 4,700 marks - by whom he left an only dau. and heiress, Anne. His grace d. in the twenty-second year of his age, on 11 June 1445, when the dukedom (and the male line of this branch of the Beauchamps) expired, but his other honours devolved upon his dau., Anne de Beauchamp, Countess of Warwick, then by two years old..."4

     John de Vere 13th Earl of Oxford married Lady Margaret Neville, daughter of Richard Neville KG, 1st/5th Earl of Salisbury and Lady Alice Montagu Countess of Salisbury, Baroness Montagu.1 John de Vere 13th Earl of Oxford was born on 8 September 1442.2 He married Elizabeth Scrope, daughter of Sir Richard Scrope and Eleanor Washbourne, between 28 November 1508 and 10 April 1509.2,3

     ; JOHN de VERE, 13th EARL OF OXFORD, as which restored by Jan 1463/4, KG (1485/6), KB (1465), PC (1485/6); b 8 Sept 1442; acted (though on behalf of his bro-in-law the ('Kingmaker') Earl of Warwick, then the official holder of the post) as Great Chamberlain of England at coronation of EDWARD IV's QUEEN ELIZABETH 1465; imprisoned Tower London 1468-69 suspected of conspiring with the Lancastrian party; fled abroad with members of the dissident Yorkist faction 1470 but returned to England 1471 and helped restore HENRY VI; Constable of England 1471; cmded Lancastrian left wing at Battle of Barnet, where the fog led his own side into confusing his armorial device with their opponent EDWARD IV's sun in its splendour; in the resulting panic the Lancastrians were routed; fled abroad again and turned privateer in the Channel; landed in Cornwall 1473 and held St Michael's Mount till obliged to capitulate, whereupon incarcerated at the Castle of Hammes, nr Calais, and attainted 1475; broke out of Hammes 1485, joined the future HENRY VII and led the latter's archers at Bosworth, following which his attainder was reversed and he was made Ld High Adml of England, Ireland and Aquitaine, High Steward Duchy Lancaster south of Trent and Constable Tower London; also had restored the hereditary post of Ld Gt Chamberlain of England; a cdr of HENRY VII's forces at Battles of Stoke 1487 and Blackheath 1497; m 1st Lady Margaret Neville, sis of Richard ('The Kingmaker'), 1st/16th Earl of Warwick (see ABERGAVENNY, M); m 2nd between 28 Nov 1508 and 10 April 1509 Elizabeth (d 26 June 1537), widow of 2nd Viscount Beaumont (see BEAUMONT, Bt) and dau of Sir Richard Scrope, and dsp(s?) 10 March 1512/3.2
