; Blessed THOMAS PERCY, 1st EARL OF NORTHUMBERLAND (E), as which cr 1 May 1557 (with the same precedence only that his ancestors as Earls of Northumberland had enjoyed, with the result that he was placed second in the table of precedence for earls, immediately after the Earl of Arundel), as also 30 April 1557 (i.e., the day before) BARON PERCY (both E), with in both cases remainder, failing heirs male of his body, to his bro Henry, in like manner, KG (1563-69); b 1528; restored in blood only 14 March 1549, on the understanding that he refrain from putting forward a claim to the property his unc had bequeathed HENRY VIII, including the honours; Keeper Prudhoe Castle 1556, ktd 30 April 1557; High Marshal Army in the North May 1557, Constable Richmond and Middleham Castles July 1557, Jt Warden then Warden E March Aug 1557 and Jan 1558/9, jt commr to negotiate peace with Scots Jan 1557/8; conspired Nov 1569 with 6th and last Earl of Westmorland of the 1397 cr (see ABERGAVENNY, M) to liberate MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS (by now under house arrest in England, having fled from Scotland) and restore England to what he looked on as the true Church (of Rome) but after taking Barnard Castle, Co Durham, and Hartlepool was forced by advancing govt troops to flee to Scotland, eluding another govt force originally based on the borders one of whose commanders was his own bro Sir Henry Percy; from Scotland he was extradited to England by the Regent Mar (see MAR, E) 29 May 1572; leading 20th-century historians tend to minimise the 1st EARL OF NORTHUMBERLAND's religious fervour as a driving force behind the Northern Rebellion, preferring to dwell on such material causes of dissatisfaction as his being deprived of a lucrative Cumberland copper mine by ELIZABETH I, but HH POPE LEO XIII beatified him 13 May 1895 and it was decreed that his feast should be observed in the diocese of Hexham and Newcastle on 14 Nov; moreover by the agents of his contemporary Lord Burghley (see EXETER, M), ELIZABETH's chief minister, he was considered 'dangerously obstinate in religion'; m 12 June 1558 Lady Anne Somerset (d 8 Sept 1591), 3rd dau of 2nd Earl of Worcester (see BEAUFORT, D), and was beheaded 22 Aug 1572, following his attainder 1571; as a result of the attainder the Barony of Poynings and Earldom of Northumberland of the 1415/6 cr would have expired even if the law as it has stood since 1764 had been in force then (see against 5th EARL OF NORTHUMBERLAND), but under a late 13th-century law the fact that his titles cr in 1557 were with a special remainder was held to allow their being inherited by his yr bro Henry.1
