; Per van de PasL: "Born about 1559 in London, he was the second but first surviving son of the 4th Earl of Derby and Lady Margaret Clifford. From 1572 until 1593 he was known as Lord Strange. He matriculated at Oxford, St. John College in 1572, at the age of twelve. He was summoned to Parliament and present there in 1589.
His father died 25 September 1593, making him 5th Earl of Derby and, in 1594, he became Lord Lieutenant of Lancaster and Chester. His mother had been regarded by some to be the legitimate heir to the throne and a Mr. Hesketh, encouraged by the Jesuits, approached Ferdinando to assume the Crown. He rejected this treasonable project and had Hesketh arrested. When Ferdinando died suddenly on 16 April 1594, he was generally supposed to have been poisoned. A Dr. Hackett was tortured and hanged as a wizard for having caused his sufferings and death by making a waxen image of him and sticking pins into it.
Shortly before 1580 he had married Alice Spencer and, as they had only three daughters, the next Earl of Derby was his younger brother, William.

; Per van de PasL: "Born about 1559 in London, he was the second but first surviving son of the 4th Earl of Derby and Lady Margaret Clifford.
