; per van de Pas: "Thomas Manners was born before 1492, the son of Sir George Manners, 12th lord Ros, and Anne St. Leger. February 1513, he married Elizabeth Lovel but she died shortly after 26 October 1513. He landed at Calais on 22 June 1513 on the French expedition. On 27 October 1513 he succeeded to the peerage as Lord Ros and sat in Parliament for the first time on 5 February 1515. On 7 July 1519 he was appointed joint Constable of Nottingham Castle and Keeper of Sherwood Forest. He was present at the Field of Cloth of Gold as well as at the meeting between King Henry VIII and Emperor Charles V held at Gravelines in July 1520.
In May 1521 he was one of the peers for the trial of the Duke of Buckingham and in December the same year appointed Cupbearer. Before 1523 he married Eleanor Paston and they became the parents of five sons and six daughters. May 1522 he was appointed to meet Emperor Charles V in Dover and between April and October 1522 was Warden of the East and Middle Marches towards Scotland. On 1 September 1524 he met the Pope's Ambassador at Blackheath.
Thomas was created Earl of Rutland 18 June 1525, and 12 July 1526 appointed Keeper of Enfield Chase; 27 October 1532 he was present at the meeting between King Henry VIII and King François I of France, as well as at the coronation of Anne Boleyn on 1 June 1533. However, he was also one of her judges in May 1536.
In 1536 he held a command against the rebels during the Pilgrimage of Grace. December 1538 he was one of the triers of the Marquess of Exeter and Lord Montagu. Thomas became Lord Chamberlain to the Queens Consort Anne of Cleves and Catherine Howard. On 8 August 1540 he was appointed Warden and Chief Justice and Justice in Eyre of forests beyond Trent, which he remained until he died. He became Constable of Nottingham Castle in 1542; and from August until September 1542 was Lord Warden of the Scottish Marches as well as on the Commissions of the Peace for Rutland, Lincolnshire, Surrey, Essex and Yorkshire. He died 20 September 1543 and was buried at Bottesford." He was 1st Earl of Rutland on 18 June 1525.8,3,4
