; Sir Francis Annesley, 1st Bt (I), and 1st Viscount of Valentia, Co Kerry, so cr 7 Aug 1620 and 11 March 1621/2 respectively (though in the latter case with the expectancy of becoming a Viscount only on the death of the Viscount Valentia cr on 1 March 1620/1 (see previous creations above), an event which did not occur till 26 May 1642), as also between whiles 8 Feb 1628/9 BARON MOUNTNORRIS, of Mountnorris, Co Armagh (all I), PC (I 1616-Feb 1635/6); b by 1 Feb 1583/4; in service of Sir Arthur Chichester, 1st and last Baron Chichester of Belfast (see DONEGALL, M) and Ld Dep Ireland, possibly at first in a relatively menial capacity such as that of butler but latterly on terms of close friendship (if not quite equality) such that he was put in the way of acquiring large tracts of Irish land during the Plantation of Ulster and the granting by the Crown of estates further south confiscated from native Irish families; Comptroller Works Ireland 1606, Jt Clerk Cncl Munster 1607-11, Clerk Tallies and Pells Ireland 1612-25, MP (I Parl) Lismore 1613-14 and Co Armagh 1614-15, MP ( E Parl) Carmarthen 1625 and Newton in Makerfield 1628-29, ktd 1616, Commr for reformation of Ireland March 1621/2 and Plantation of Ulster 1622, V-Treas and Receiver-Gen Revenue Ireland 1625, Treas at Wars Ireland 1632; sentenced to death for supposed insubordination during Ld Deputyship of Lord Wentworth, who had been given cause to look on him with disfavour, but sentence commuted to house arrest 1635-37, though relieved of all his posts on grounds of corruption, for which there seems to have been some justification; m 1st c 1608 Dorothy (d 3 May 1624), dau of Sir John Philipps, 1st Bt (see SAINT DAVIDS, V), and had issue (extinct in the male line, presumably by 1844, otherwise the 10th Viscount, who was of a junior branch to this one, could not have inherited the title). The 1st Viscount m 2nd by 1629 Jane (d 12 March 1683), dau of Sir John Stanhope , of Elvaston, Derbys (see 1967 edn CHESTERFIELD and STANHOPE, E), and widow of Sir Peter Courten(e), 1st and last Bt, of Addington/Aunton, Worcs, and was bur 23 Nov 1660, having by her had issue.2 He was 1st Baronet Annesley on 7 August 1620.2 He was 1st Viscount of Valentia between 11 March 1621 and 1622.2 He was Baron Mountmorris, by letters patent on 8 February 1628 at Mount Morris, co. Armagh, Ireland.
