Sir Francis Willoughby Knt., of Wollaton, Notts was buried after 16 November 1596 at St Giles Cripplegate Churchyard, London, City of London, Greater London, England; From Find A Grave:
     Birth:      1547, England
Death:      Nov. 16, 1596, London, City of London, Greater London, England
Younger son of Sir Henry Willoughby and Anne Grey. Grandson of Sir Edward Willoughby and Anne Filoll, Thomas Grey and Margaret Wooton. Great grandson of Sir Henry Willoughby and Margaret Markham, Sir William Filoll and Dorothy Ifield. He was the younger brother of Thomas and Margaret, who married Sir Matthew Arundell of Wardour Castle, the nephew of Sir John Willoughby.
Francis married Elizabeth Littleton of Frankley, Worcestershire when he was seventeen years old. Their only son died at the age of six and the marriage produced only living daughters.
When Francis lost his father, slain on the Mousehold Heath during the Kett Rebellion 27 August 1549, he inherited this father's properties which had, in turn, been inherited from his brother, Sir John. Francis, aged two, and his brother became wards of their mother's brother, Sir Henry Grey, the Marquess of Dorset, and lived with Henry and his wife at Bradgate House. Margaret became a ward of Grey's half brother, George Medley. When Sir Henry's eldest daughter, Lady Jane Grey was beheaded, he also lost his life, George was imprisoned and no longer able to care for the Willoughby children. Sir Henry's widow, Frances Brandon, arranged for Francis to be schooled, took Margaret under her care and sent Thomas to Sir William Paget, and eventually married his daughter, Dorothy Paget. Thomas died childless in 1559 from overheating while hunting, and the family estates passed to Francis.
Sir Francis developed coal mines at the Wollaton estate, allowing him a lavish lifestyle. Robert Smythson, also buried at St Leonard's was hired to build Francis Wollaton Hall.
Sir Francis and Elizabeth separated with his heir died at age six, and remained separated when the Queen allowed her a healthy annual allowance of £200. Sir Francis made a distant relative, Percy Willoughby of Bore Place his heir, who married his eldest daughter, Bridget.
Francis became quite wealthy with the processing of woad (blue dye plant) and a plantation in Ireland, and ironworks in Middleton, yet was unable to meet his debts or furnish his daughters with complete dowries. When he handed his debts and properties over to Percival, he had reconciled with his wife, who died in the same time frame. He married again, but died only a few months later, with another daughter born posthumously.
