"Ulrich was the son of Ulrich III, comte de Neuchâtel, and his first wife Gertrud. After the death of his father in 1225 he became count of Aarberg and lord of Strassberg (a castle located at Büren an der Aare), Illens, Arconciel and Valangin.
"Before June 1251 Ulrich exchanged with his brother Berthold I the lordship of Valangin for that of Strassberg. Also before June that year Ulrich married Agnes von Mömpelgard, daughter of Dietrich III 'le Grand Baron', Graf von Mömpelgard, and Alix von Pfirt, dame de Belfort. They had four sons and two daughters, of whom Johann I and Wilhelm would have progeny.
"In 1271 Ulrich built the town and two bridges of Aarberg. On an island between the Aare and the Little Aare, Aarberg was the only point of passage between Berne and Büren an der Aare, and was built on the site of a much older village. To thank the inhabitants for their labour he granted franchises to the town. In that year he did the same for Arconciel-Illens.

"Ulrich was the son of Ulrich III, comte de Neuchâtel, and his first wife Gertrud. After the death of his father in 1225 he became count of Aarberg and lord of Strassberg (a castle located at Büren an der Aare), Illens, Arconciel and Valangin.
"Before June 1251 Ulrich exchanged with his brother Berthold I the lordship of Valangin for that of Strassberg. Also before June that year Ulrich married Agnes von Mömpelgard, daughter of Dietrich III 'le Grand Baron', Graf von Mömpelgard, and Alix von Pfirt, dame de Belfort. They had four sons and two daughters, of whom Johann I and Wilhelm would have progeny.
"In 1271 Ulrich built the town and two bridges of Aarberg. On an island between the Aare and the Little Aare, Aarberg was the only point of passage between Berne and Büren an der Aare, and was built on the site of a much older village. To thank the inhabitants for their labour he granted franchises to the town. In that year he did the same for Arconciel-Illens.
