Thomas Stonor Esq., of Stonor (in Pyrton), Oxfordshire1,2
M, #71433
Father | (?) Stonor |
Last Edited | 20 Jun 2009 |
Thomas Stonor Esq., of Stonor (in Pyrton), Oxfordshire married Alice Kirby.1
; per Richardson: "Charles Ward has correctly stated the parentage of Alice Stonor, wife of Humphrey Forster, Esq. She was the daughter of Thomas Stonor, Esq. (1394-1431), of Stonor (in Pyrton), Oxfordshire, and his wife, Alice Kirkby. She was thus the sister of Thomas Stonor, Esq., who married Joan de la Pole.
Alice Stonor married (as his 1st wife) Humphrey Forster, Esq. (1420-1488), of Harpsden by Henley, Oxfordshire, a lawyer. He was Knight of the Shire for Oxfordshire in 1467-1468, and ?1470-1471, Sheriff of Gloucestershire, 1472-1473, and Sheriff of Oxfordshire and Berkshire, 1474-1475.. A rather full biography of Humphrey Forster is found in Wedgwood, House of Parliament, 1 (1936): 344-345. Alice Stonor and her husband, Humphrey Forster, Esq., had a son and heir, Humphrey Forster, who was allegedly aged 30 or more in 1488 (but Wedgwood wisely observes that the younger Humphrey was more than likely aged 40 or more at that date). They were also the parents of Jane Forster, wife of John Greville (living 1499), of Drayton, Oxfordshire, which couple is ancestral to several New World immigrants, including Audrey Barlow, Elizabeth Bosvile, and George, Giles, and Robert Brent.
Humphrey Forster, husband of Alice Stonor, married (2nd) after 1466 Sibyl, widow of Robert Poyntz, which Sibyl survived him in 1488. According to Wedgwood, Sibyl was born in 1426, thus it is unlikely that she was the mother of any of Humphrey's children.
I might add that Alice Stonor, wife of Humphrey Forster, Esq., should not be confused with her brother, Thomas Stonor's daughter, also named Alice Stonor. This other Alice Stonor married Richard Harcourt, Knt., as stated in my book, Plantagenet Ancestry (2004)."2
; per Ward: "I have had the opportunity to review Kingsford's STONOR LETTERS AND PAPERS 1290-1483, by Charles Lethbridge Kingsford and Christine Carpenter, published by Cambridge University Press, 1996. It is an outstanding source for this family. After a review of this source, I feel confident Alice Stonor, wife of Sir Humphrey Forster, was indeed the daughter of Thomas Stonor and Alice Kirby. There are many references to Humphrey Forster in this book, in the form of letters and other documents which pertain to the Stonor family. They all attest to his wife's placement in this family. Allow me to provide a few references.
Pages 181-182 provides a transcript of a letter from Sir Humphrey Forster to his brother-in-law, Thomas Stonor, in which Sir Humphrey addresses Stonor as, "Ryght worshypfull and my goode kynde brother..." and signs it as "Your trewe brother Humfrey Forster" addressing it "To my ryght worshipful Brother Thomas Stonoroe." The letter is dated 21 Oct 1466 and pertains to the death of Thomas Sackville, who married Isabel, a sister of Thomas Stonor and Forster' wife, Alice.
Most convincingly, a letter is found, dating sometime after 1477, in which Sir Humphrey Forster wrote his nephew, Sir William Stonor (son of Thomas Stonor and Joan de la Pole). In it, Sir Humphrey addresses Sir William as, "Ryght worshipfull and entierly wel-beloved nevew.......(sic)"
The introduction of the book mentions Alice Stonor and Humphrey Forster and she is identified as a daughter of Thomas Stonor and Alice Kirby. Page 32 provides a chart of the Stonor family which clearly places Alice Stonor, daughter of Thomas Stonor (d.1431) and Alice Kirby (d.1468), as the wife of Humphrey Forster.
Clearly, Alice Stonor, wife of Sir Humphrey Forster, was not the daughter of Joan de la Pole and Thomas Stonor. She was the daughter of Thomas Stonor and Alice Kirby."1
