Raimbaud II (?) Comte d'Orange1,2

M, #62016, d. circa 1121
FatherBertrand Raimbaud II (?) Vicomte de Nice-Orange4,3,1
MotherAdélaïde de Cavenez3,2 d. a 12 Oct 1113
Last Edited13 Aug 2020
Raimbaud II (?) Comte d'Orange died circa 1121.1
; NB: There is disagreement concerning the identify of Raimbaud II's mother.
Genealogics says that she was name Gilberte.
Wikipédia (Fr.) says that her name was Gilberge.
Med Lands says that she was named Adélaïde, and cites a charter name her as his mother: "The fact that she was the mother of Raimbaud Comte d’Orange is confirmed by the charter dated 1126 under which “Idelfonsus comes Tholosanus et marchio Provinciæ” confirmed properties to Berenger Bishop of Orange, with the consent of “Thiburgæ filii Raimbaldi”, including donations made by “comitissa mater Raimbaldi...Atalaix”[274]." Med Lands cites: [274] Gallia Christiana, Tome I, Instrumenta, Ecclesiæ Arausicanæ, IV, p. 132.
Jean Gallian shows the marriage to Gerberge/Gilberte/Gilberge as problematic and names Adélaïde as tne mother of Raimbaud II. (See attached diagram from Jean Gallian.)
Conclusion:
Based on the charter evidence cited by Med Lands, I have chosen to show Adélaïde as Raimbaud II's mother. GA Vaut.1,3,2,5,6

; This is the same person as ”Raimbaut II, Count of Orange” at Wikipedia and as ”Raimbaud II d'Orange” at Wikipédia (FR).7,8

; Per Genealogics:
“Raymbaud II, comte d'Orange _(Raimboldus comes de Oringis)_ was the elder son of Bertrand Raimbaud, vicomte de Nice, and his first wife Giberte. His date of birth is not known. According to two sources, Albert of Aix and William of Tyre (neither of them eye-witnesses), he joined the First Crusade, presumably setting out in 1096; his name is linked with those of Bishop Adhemar of Le Puy and Robert II, Graaf van Vlaanderen, and he is said to have been present at the siege of Antioch in 1098. He remained in Palestine and died there, probably in 1121.
“He married, but his wife's name is not known. No sons survived him. His daughter Tiburge, in her father's prolonged absence, was being called 'Countess of Orange' as early as 1115. With her second husband Guillem d'Omelaz, sire d'Omelaz, de Mont-Arnaud, she would have progeny, including the troubadour Raymbaud of Orange who inherited the territories of Omelaz and Orange.”.1

Richard (?) Comte de Rouen1

M, #62017, d. after 796
FatherHieronymus/Jérôme dit «Martel» (?) gouverneur de Ponthieu2,1,3 d. a 782
ReferenceGAV32
Last Edited26 Jun 2020
Richard (?) Comte de Rouen died after 796.4
; NB: The relationship between Buvinus Comte de Metz and Boson l'Ancien has been explored by Settipani [1993] and is summarized by Wikipédia (Fr.) as follows:
See the attached diagram of the ancestry as proposed by Settipani [1993], from Wikipédia (Fr.)
Conclusion: Settipani's proposals a certainly speculative, and Med Lands offers a critique and some counter-proposals (which are noted in my Med Lands Notes for the individuals concerned. For now, I have chosed to try to reconstruct the lineage as outlined by Settipani (see attached chart). GA Vaut.1,5,6

; Per Med Lands:
"RICHARD (-after 796). Nithard records that his own father Angilbert "was a descendant of a family not unknown in those days, Madhelgaud, Richard and he came from the same stock" (“Angilbertus...Madhelgaudus autem, Richardus [apparently referring to Richard brother of Buvinus] et hic una progenie fuere”)[527]. "Carolus…rex Francorum et Langobardorum" donated property to the abbey of Saint-Denis by charter dated 16 Dec 781 which names "fidelibus…Richardo comite, Gunthardo comite, Theutbaldo comite, Griphone, Geroldo, Nortboldo, Winegiso, Walberto, Gisloldo, Aroino, Theutboldo, Constabili et Waraldo comite palatii nostri"[528]. The Vita Hludowici Imperatoris names "Willebertus…Rotomagæ postea urbis archiepiscopum et Richardum comitem villarum suarum provisorem" in 796 as royal missi[529]. There is some speculation that this person was “Richard”, son of Comte Hieronymus, and that he was also “Richard” father of the brothers Richard (died [839/12 Nov 842]) and Buvinus (father of Boson King [of Provence]). Settipani refers to “Richard fils présumé du comte Hieronymus” whom he identifies as Richard who is named in 796[530]. He links this person with a speculative descent of the kings of Provence (family of Boson King [of Provence]) from Comte Hieronymus, illegitimate son of Charles "Martel"[531]. The trail starts with a reference by the late 10th century historian Richer who states that “Karolus Constantinus, Viennæ civitatis princeps” (son of Emperor Louis III, son of King Boson – see the document PROVENCE) was “ex regio quidem genere natus” but “concubinali stemmate usque ad tritavum”[532]. Settipani interprets the text as applying to the ancestor in the direct male line, and suggests that the chronology supports the “tritavus” in question being Comte Hieronymus. The hypothesis also links with the theory of Gingins-la-Sarra, who states that “on présume” that the brothers Richard (died (-[839/12 Nov 842]) and Buvinus (father of Boson King [of Provence]) were sons of this Comte Richard[533]. Gingins-la-Sarra relies on the passage in Nithard which is quoted above, although that text is so vague that it could refer to numerous different family connections. Whatever the truth about the imprecise descent referred to by Richer, inserting Comte Richard (named in 796) into the line of descent requires a giant leap of faith. There is no proof either that Hieronymus had a son named Richard or that Richard (named in 796) had any connection at all with the brothers Richard and Buvinus (other than his name). The speculation may be interesting, but it does not appear well argued. Until more information comes to light, it is suggested that it should be treated with extreme caution."

"BERTRAND, son of RAIMBAUD & his [third wife Adelaide ---]. He is recorded in three documents: "Raimbaldus...et filiis suis ac Laugerio, Raimbaldo scilicet et Bertranno" donated "monasterium sancti Verani…in pago Vinciensi" to Lérins by charter dated 1062[269]; "Petrus Vasensis episcopus filius Raimbaldi" donated “castrum...Drapo...in comitatu Nicensi” to Nice, for the soul of "domni Mironi qui fuit quondam", by charter dated 21 Apr 1073, signed by “Leodegarius frater, Rostagnus frater, Bertrannus frater...”[270]; "Bertrandus filius Raimbaldi et uxor mea cum filiis meis" donated “vineam de Columba quartam partem...in Calvarolas...” to Nice by charter dated to [1078], signed by "Petrus episcopus..."[271]. His identification as the father of Raimbaud Comte d’Orange is indicated by two other documents. Firstly, Cais de Pierlas indicates a source dated to [1061] which names “Bertrandus Aurasicensis filius Raimbaldi” (although he does not provide any citation reference)[272]. Secondly, an undated letter from Pope Alexander II (who was Pope from 1061 to 1073) threatened “Bertrando filio Raimbaldi” with excommunication if he persisted in harassing Géraud who was Bishop of Orange from 1060 to 1085[273]. He cites other sources which indicate that other members of Bertrand’s family were resident in the area of Orange.
"m [as her second husband,] ADELAIDE, [widow of ---,] daughter of --- (-after 12 Oct 1103). The fact that she was the mother of Raimbaud Comte d’Orange is confirmed by the charter dated 1126 under which “Idelfonsus comes Tholosanus et marchio Provinciæ” confirmed properties to Berenger Bishop of Orange, with the consent of “Thiburgæ filii Raimbaldi”, including donations made by “comitissa mater Raimbaldi...Atalaix”[274]. The possibility of her earlier marriage is discussed in the Introduction to this section."
