     In the Name of God Amen, Know ye that I James Slaughter of Queen Anns County in the Province of Maryland being sick and weak of Body but of sound mind and memory thanks be to God for the same and calling to mind the mortality of my Body and knowing it is appointed for all men once to die do make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say I Recommend my Soul to Almighty God that gave it me - Trusting in the merits and mediation of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ for the Remission of all my Sins my Body to the Grave to be buried in a Decent and Christian like manner and as for such worldly goods as it hath pleased God to bestow on me I give and dispose of as followeth.
     Imprimis it is my Will that all my Just Debts be duly paid for which I leve two hundred acres of my Land to be sold by my Executrix to be laid off at the Upper end of my Land next to Joseph Councels.
     Item, I give to my Dear and Loving wife all my Estate Real and Personal during her natural life and after her deat [sic] it is my will and desire that all my Lands should be equally divided between four of my sons vizt: Edward, John, Jonathan and Nathan in manner following. Edward to hold and Injoy the place whereon he now lives with his part adjoining to him and his heirs forever & my son Jonathan the place I bought of William Tim with his part adjoining to him and his heirs forever my son Nathan to hold and Injoy the plantation whereon I now live with his part adjoining tohim and his heirs forever.

     Son of Martin Runyon and Patience Baxter, Silas arrived with his parents at the Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill, Kentucky at age 6, along with many extended family members including his grandparents Phineas and Charity Runyon.
     At age 15, Silas was the first of the Runyon children to depart Pleasant Hill and the Shaker lifestyle and "Go into the World."
     He married Rebecca Tye July 18, 1825 (a typo has perpetuated the 1829 myth) in Whitley Co., KY. After Rebecca's death at their property in Garrard County, KY, Silas moved with their sons - Jefferson Runyon, Silas Samson Runyon, George Runyon, and Absolom Runyon - and his second wife (Cynthia Ann Cornelius, married November 19, 1846 in Garrard Co.) to Texas, near Dallas. Silas and Cynthia had two boys of their own: John Runyon, and Silas Burk Runyon.
     Cynthia (sometimes "Sintha") later married E.M. Cleavinger after Silas' death in late 1856/early 1857.

     A big group of the Runyons who had migrated from the Hunterdon, New Jersey area to Rowan County, North Carolina ended up in Madison County, Kentucky and many of those (in the Phineas Runyon family) joined the Shaker community at Pleasant Hill in Mercer County, Kentucky. You can read more about Phineas on his memorial at https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=runyon&GSmid=48738760&GRid=158083527&. At a certain age, the Shaker children were asked to sign to covenant or "go into the world." Silas Baxter had been brought by his parents Martin Runyon and Patience Baxter to the community at age seven but by 15 decided to was not the life for him.
     How he ended up in Whitley County, I do not know but there he married Rebecca Tye July 18, 1825 or 1829 I was able to find the listing using the Internet Archive (way back machine) and is has been typed as 1829 - https://web.archive.org/web/20000524180925/http://www.rootsweb.com/~kycrrsek/whimarr.html but if you look at the a copy of the handwritten page (attached) it certainly looks like 1825. I don't really understand the scribbles below their names and those might be important. I think under Rebecca's is says "Dau. of Geo. Tye".

     I gathered a lot of deed info from Garrard County, Kentucky on Silas Runyon when I was there about 17 years ago. I'll included those here in case they are helpful to you, then go on to what I know about his life in Texas.
     Garrard County, Kentuckt deeds (Silas Runyon):
     · Feb. 1841 - No 1561 W. Hicks To S B Runnion / Mortgage / Know all men by these presents that G.? William Hicks of the County of Garrard and State of Kentucky, have this day bargained and sold unto Silas B Runnion of the County and State afore., the following property (vig?), two Beds and furniture, two Bedsteads, one cow and Yearling calf, one sow and five Pigs, one axe and one hoe, one oven, one skillet and their lids, three chairs, one table, one cupboard, ten plates, one sett cups & Saucers, knives & forks, to have and to hold unto him the said Runnion and to his heirs forever by these presents. The condition of the above obligation is such, that whereas I the said Hicks am indebted to the said Runnion to the amount of sixty dollars on note which will become due on the 12th day of February 1842, - now should I on or before the said note becomes due, pay to the said Runnion the aforesaid sum of sixty dollars, then, and in that case this obligation shall be void and of no effect, but otherwise remain in full force and virtue in Said. Runion / Mortgage / Know all men by these presents I Samuel Turner of the County of Garrard and State of Kentucky have this day bargained and sold unto William Marksberry and Silas B Runion of the County and State aforesaid the following property viz, all my entire? Stock of Tobacco, seventeen acres of corn and four thousand Bundles of Shear oates to have and to hold the aforesaid property and I the said Samuel Turner do hereby warrant and defend the title to the same. The consideration of the above obligation is such whereas the above named William Marksberry and Silas B Runion, are bound as the Security for the said Samuel Turner in a note given to Collin C. Carter for one hundred dollars due about two years since and when which note suit has been instituted in the Garrard Circuit Court, now should the said Samuel Turner well and truly pay the above mentioned debt together with all interest and costs then this obligation to be void otherwise remain in full force and virtue in testimony whereof the said Samuel Turner has hereunto set his hand and affirmed his Seal this the 23rd day of September 1841 [Signed] Samuel Turner (Garrard County Deed Book O, page 97)
     · Sept. 1842 - Know all men by these presents that I Samuel Turner of the County of Garrard and State of Kentucky for and in consideration of the sum of one Hundred dollars to me in hand paid the receipt whereof I hereby acknowledge hath this day bargained and sold and by these presents do bargain and sell unto Silas B Runnion and William Marksbury of the same County and State the following property, ?, Twenty five acres of corn in the field, supposed to be one Hundred barrels, three thousand bundles of sheave oats, one and one fourth acres of hemp and all my crop of Tobacco to have and to hold the aforesaid property to them the said Runnion & Marksbury and their heirs forever - and I the said Samuel Turner. Do hereby warrant and defend the title to the same by these presents- The condition of the above obligation is such where as, Collin C. Carter has convened? A judgment at the last August ? of the Garrard circuit court against the above bound Samuel Turner and the above named Silas B Runion and William Marksbury as his security for the sum of forty five Dollars and 35 cents and where as also the above named Samuel Turner is indebted to the above named Silas B Runnion in the sum of forty Dollars due by ? date the 1st day of April 1842 - ? the said Samuel Turner ? and truly pay the above mentioned debts together with all interests and costs, then this obligation to be void else remain in full force and virtue given under my hand and seal this the 25th day of Sept 1842.      · Nov. 1842 - Know all men by these presents, that I Larkin Hicks of the County of Garrard and state Kentucky have this day bargained and sold, unto Silas B Runyon, of the county and state aforesaid, the following property, ?, ? 1 set of Windsor chairs, 1 breakfast table, 2 sets plates, 2 sets of spoons, 2 skillets, one oven and lid, one baker, 2 feather Beds, 10 quilts, 2 trunks, one fine shovel, 1 looking glass, 26 yards carpet, to have and to hold the afs. Property, and I the said Larkin Hicks do hereby warrant and defend the title to the same. The condition of the above obligation is such whereas the above named Silas B Runyon is bound as the S? county for the said Larkin Hicks in a
note given to Wm. Montgomery of Washington County and state of Kentucky for the sum of thirteen Dollars, with some interest and Cost and also a note for the sum of five Dollars, given to John Colins of Madison County, Ky. Now should the said Larkin Hicks well and truly pay the above mentioned debts, together with all interests and costs, then this obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue.      · Feb. 1843 -Mortgage From Reuben Price to Silas B Runyon / Know all men by these presents that I Reuben Price have this day bargained and sold unto Silas Runyon the following property viz. one cupboard and cupboardware, one Berean?, one sett of shoe amkers boots, two tables, and one Hone? and two beds and furniture to have and to hold unto the said Runyon his heirs forever. The condition of the above sale is such that whereas I the said Reuben Price am justly indebted unto the said Silas Runyon by note for @9.15 beginginning? Date 20th January 1843. Now should I the said Reuben Price well and truly pay off and discharge the said Runyon harmless, then this obligation to be void Else to remain in full force and virtue; In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal this 3rd Feb 1843.      · March 1844 - For the purpose of secureing Samuel W. Miller, James Lear and Silas B Runyon in the sum of Thirty Eight Dollars and 32 cents with interest from the date, the same bring now due by Executors in the hands of A.F? Harris Constable of Garrard County, and for the further consideration of one dollar in hand paid, I John Bolton of Garrard County Kentucky, have this day Mortgaged and conveyed to them, a certain tract of land lying in the County of Garrard, on the waters of Paint Lick Creek, adjoining the lands of William Wheeler dec. and William Cotton, and Contains 40 acres, the same being a portion of the land, which descended to me, as one of the heirs of Joel Ford dec. To have and to hold to them the said Miller, Lear and Runyon, and their heirs forever. Now should I well and truly pay the sum of money afs. With all accrueing interest therein, to the persons entitled thereto, on or before the first day of October 1844 and hear the said Miller, Lear and Runyon from all loss whatever, then this mortgage and conveyances be void, otherwise to be and remain in full force and virtue. Yantis County Com do certify that Silas B Runyon hath this day paid me as Com as aforesaid ten Dollars for ten acres of land supposed to be vacant lying on Sugar Creek at or near the three forks of said creek adjoining the lands of said Runyon, Wm Montgomery and Given under my hand this 25th Feby 1846. Jess Yantis Cle? Silas B. Runyon has this day filed in my office a receipt from Jessee Yantis, Treasurer of Garrard County, appointed by the County Court of said County, under an act of the general assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, approved February 21, 1837 for the sum of ten Dollars, which entitles him to a survey of ten acres of land supposed to be vacant lying on Sugar Creek, at or near the three forks of said creek ~ adjoining the lands of said Runyon, Wm Montgomery. The Surveyor of Garrard County is hereby directed to survey the said supposed vacant land, and deliver to the said Silas B. Runyon a certificate there of. Runyan of the one part and Moses Collier of the other part, witnesseth, That whereas the said Thomas Anderson died seised? Of a certain tract or parcel of land situate, lying and being in the County of Garrard on the waters of Sugar Creek and more particularly bounded and described as follows viz: Beginning at a red oak stump, standing on the westardly side of said Creek, thence N. 80° E. along Woodfins? Line, crossing the creek 35 poles to a Beech tree standing on the spring branch, thence S. 61 ½ °E. 15 poles to a Buckeye and sugar tree standing on said branch, thence S. 23° E. 212 poles to a white oak, sugar tree, and two Beech trees at the mouth Teeters spring Branch in the line of Wm. Watkins, thence with his line N 51 ½ ° West 132 poles to an Elm and Sugar tree, thence S. 60° W. 30 poles to a sugar tree standing on the westardly side of the road in Watkins line, thence north with Grants line crossing the creek to the beginning, containing sixty acres: And whereas the said Thomas Anderson direc_ that this same should be sold and divided between the above named parties of the first part except the said Runyan; and the same was sold to John Banton and by him transferred to Charles Marshall and by him to Henry Sirton?      According to- "KY Colonization of Texas: A History of the Peters Colony" from the Register of the KY Hist. Soc., by Seymour V. Connor, 1983------lists Bonafide Colonists who received land : pg. 124 RUNYON, Silas B., married, Farmer, migrated to TX between July 1, 1845 and July 1, 1848, age 42 "Born KY, migrated from KY, settled on land in Dallas Co., TX"
     The Texas Portal of History has some probabte records for Silas Runyon (links at end of this message). I see now that they give his death date of October 16, 1854. That's a couple of years earlier than I thought.
     I also had these bit of evidence:
     According to "Footprints" (Tarrant Co. Geneal. Soc. newsletter), an early Tarrant Co. land grant was granted to Silas B. Runyon on 6 Dec. 1855. The assignees were listed as "heirs".
     1855, December - the Texas General Land Office granted 640 acres to Silas B. Runyon and his heirs. The land was situated "in Dallas County on the waters of Trinity river about 9 miles South of Dallas Known as Section N `33 in Township 2, South of the first Base line in Range 1, east of the first Meridian, by virtue of the commissioner of Peter's Colony on the 14th day of November 18?7", adjacent to the property of John S. Tucker.

Evidence for paternity of John Henry: I am now convinced that the preponderance of the evidence I have found supports the conclusion that John Henry ROBERTS (JHR, ca 1867-1928) is the youngest child of Elijah Josiah ROBERTS (EJR, 1823-1868) and his SECOND wife Luticia Frances HIGGINBOTHAM (LFH, 1836-1877). The evidence supporting this conclusion is as follows:

     1.     JHR and EJR were both in Cherokee Co., TX around the time of JHR's birth (ca 1867). JHR claimed to have been born in Cherokee Co., TX (per his children who informed his death certificate and obituary). EJR and his family were in the 1860 federal census for Shady Grove, Cherokee Co. TX.
     2.     The probate record for EJR's estate mentions "5 minor children" (unnamed) when recorded on 28 December 1868. Only four minor children of EJR living in Dec 1868 have been otherwise identified, leaving the possibility that JHR was the fifth minor child (another child, Elijah Columby, died as an infant in 1864):

     4.     A John Roberts (DOB 1865) appears in the household of a John T Wilson as a "orphan" farm worker in the 1870 census of Kaufman Co., TX. Coincidentally, the apparent location of the Wilson household is not far from the home of Emma Franklin, who JHR married in 1890
     5.     In the 1900 Census (Navarro Co., TX), JHR gives his parent's birthplaces both as AL. LFH was in fact born in AL, however EJH was born in TN. Since JHR's father EJR died in 1868 when JHR was between 1 and 4 years old, it is not unusual that he got his father's home state wrong.
     6. And Most Importantly: Because of the uncertainty of John Henry Roberts' parentage, a cousin and I have been trying to use DNA analysis to draw some conclusion as to which ROBERTS clan he might have descended from. We have three DNA samples on FTDNA and have accumulated a few matches to other likely links to the line of Elizah Josiah Roberts and his ancestors, the man I currently presume to be John Henry's father, but nother conclusive. I've here attached a chart showing some of that research. More recently (2 Feb 2019) Ancestry has published a DNA result that shows the link between the DNA samples of my mother and myself with the earlier Roberts of Elijah and the HIGGINBOTHAM line of his wife, Luticia. Graphics of these DNA analysis results are attached. I now feel that the link between and Elijah and Luticia (HIGGINBOTHAM) ROBERTS as the parents of John Henry ROBERTS is confirmed.

The only contrary evidence that I have found against this conclusion has to do with inconsistencies in the various records for JHR's DOB. However, I believe that the lack of consistency between the various records actually weakens the strength of these facts as contradictory evidence and that the Ancestry DNA matches confirm the link of John Henry to Elijah and Luticia as his prents.

The few contradicions are:
     1.     JHR's 1928 obituary gives his date of birth (DOB) as March 17, 1867.
