John McClanahan Sr. was born in December 1774 at Augusta Co., Virginia, USA.2 He married Lydia Burns on 23 May 1797 at Ste Genevieve District, Louisiana Territory, USA.3
John McClanahan Sr. died in April 1847 at Lawrencton, Ste Genevieve Co., Missouri, USA, at age 72.2
John McClanahan Sr. was buried in April 1847 at Location unknown ; from Find A Grave website:
Birth: Dec., 1774, Augusta County, Virginia, USA
Death: Apr., 1847, Lawrenceton, Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri, USA
John McClenahan was born about Dec. 1774. Very little is known about his early life. In his grandfather's (Robert McClenachan, Sr.) will in 1791, Robert and John, grandsons, sons of his deceased son Robert Jr., are to inherit all his Kentucky Lands. This land was either 1000 or 1800 acres, located in Shelby County, Kentucky, on the banks of the Kentucky River, near Brashears and Bullskin Creeks. Records show that Robert Sr. bought this land in 1785. The records in Kentucky also show that John sold 100 acres of land on 12 Aug 1796, for 60 pounds, good and lawful money of the state of Kentucky.
The next record of John is a marriage record translated from the original French document, recording the marriages of non-Catholics living in the District of Ste. Genevieve, Upper Louisiana Territory (this is now Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri); to wit: "May 23, 1797, John McCLENAHAN, son of Robert McCLENAHAN and Catherine MADISON, native of Virginia married to Lydia BURNS daughter of Michael BURNS and Mary SPICER natives of this parish."
There are many records in Ste. Genevieve Co. of John. He lived in Jackson Township near the town of Punjaub (name changed to Lawrenceton, about 1880). He also owned part interest in a sawmill on Fourche du Clue, a branch of Establishment Creek. John was constantly being summoned into Justice of the Peace court for non-payment of debts ranging anywhere from $8.90 to about $700. In 1833 he was appointed Justice of the Peace for Jackson Township by Missouri Governor, Daniel Dunklin. He served as a Justice of the Peace until his death in 1847.
So far no traces of where John and Lydia are buried have been discovered. John died without leaving a will and there is a record of application on file for Administration of the estate by a lawyer. John and Lydia had 6 children:
- James John (1793-1847)
- Catherine (1797-1837)
- James (1798-1873)
- Mary Ann (1808-1885)
- William Madison (1812-1869)
- John Burns, Jr. (1814-1885)
- Michael Burns (1816-1868)
- Robert (1820-?)
- Spicer C (1824-1881)
There are still many descendants of Madison McCLENAHAN living in Jefferson and Ste. Genevieve Counties today.
John's son, James, had a family disagreement with brother Madison, and changed the spelling of his surname to McClanahan. Over time, many other family members also used this spelling. (Adapted from "The McClenahan Family", by James R. McClenahan)

Captain Matthew Arbuckle, ‘‘large of stature and large of spirit,'' was born about 1740/41 in Virginia or Scotland. He is listed as serving in the Augusta County, Virginia, militia in 1758–59, was a lieutenant in 1767, and commissioned captain of Botetourt County militia in 1770. He served as a gentleman justice of Botetourt County from its founding in 1769 until 1773.
A hunter and trapper, Arbuckle was probably the first white man to travel from Virginia to the Ohio other than as a prisoner of the Indians. In 1774 he built the stockade on Muddy Creek, Greenbrier County, now known as Arbuckle's Old Fort.
Commanding a company of Botetourt County militia he served as guide and chief scout for Gen. Andrew Lewis's 1774 march to Point Pleasant, contributing greatly to the defeat of the Indians led by Chief Cornstalk at the Battle of Point Pleasant. Later he built Fort Randolph at Point Pleasant. He was in command there when a mob of newly arrived and undisciplined militia, who had witnessed one of their number killed and scalped by the Indians, overcame their officers' and Arbuckle's attempts to maintain order and murdered the captive Cornstalk.
Soon after 1774, Arbuckle established his residence near Lewisburg, then known as Fort Savannah, and when the town was laid out in 1780 he was the first settler. In 1778 he was active in raising the siege of Fort Donnally, near Lewisburg. On retirement from active military service he farmed his extensive lands and served several public duties. In March of 1781 he was commissioned to lay out a route from Lewisburg to Warm Springs, Bath County. In June of that year, returning from the capital at Williamsburg, Arbuckle was caught in a violent storm near the banks of the Jackson River and killed by a falling tree. He left a widow and six strong sons.

; Per e-WV:
"Arbuckle’s Fort was a Revolutionary-era frontier fort located in Greenbrier County, one of many forts that helped white and African-American settlers to colonize Western Virginia. The fort stood on the property of John Keeney on a rise of land near the confluence of Mill Creek and Muddy Creek. It was built in the spring of 1774, under order of Capt. Matthew Arbuckle.
"Captain Arbuckle’s militia company occupied Arbuckle’s Fort from the spring to the fall of 1774. In September 1774, Captain Arbuckle and his men left the fort to help guide Col. Andrew Lewis and the southwestern Virginia militia down the Kanawha River to Point Pleasant, where they fought in the Battle of Point Pleasant. Other militia companies occupied Arbuckle’s Fort in 1776, 1777, and 1778. Although no large-scale attacks on this fort occurred, it was fired upon by Indian forces in 1774, and nearby settlers reported hearing gunshots near the fort in 1777. This second incident came on the evening of September 11, 1777. Earlier that day Indians had killed three people and kidnapped another at the James Graham house in present Summers County, and it is likely that the same raiding party was responsible for both attacks. Spent lead shot has been recovered from archeological excavations conducted at Arbuckle’s Fort in 1997.
"The excavations established that the fort was diamond-shaped, about 100 feet on a side, and consisted of a log stockade with bastions at the north and south ends. A blockhouse with a stone foundation and a central stone chimney was located inside the stockade. Large amounts of slag and unworked iron are evidence of a blacksmithing area inside the fort. Artifacts recovered from the archeological excavations include worn-out gunflints and a letter seal that expressed the inhabitants’ Revolutionary zeal by imprinting the word ‘‘Liberty.’’
"Arbuckle’s Fort was part of an elaborate frontier defense system protecting Western Virginia settlements during the Indian wars of the late 18th century. The defense system included organized and coordinated scout patrols, local militia, and numerous forts. Arbuckle’s was considered one of the stronger forts in its area. Other nearby forts included McCoy’s Fort, Fort Donnally, and Fort Savannah at present Lewisburg.

Frances Hunter was born at sea after her parents set sail for America. She was the daughter of John Henry and Frances Mortimer Hunter. She married three times. First to James Lawrence, Jr. who died shortly after the wedding, second to Captain Matthew Arbuckle and third to Alexander Welch. She married Capt. Arbuckle on December 17, 1774 in Botentourt County, VA and they had four children, all males, James Harvey, General Matthew, Thomas and Samuel. Her marriage to Alexander came after Matthew's death and they had four known children; Agnes, Frances and two unknown. Ann Royal wrote a book on Greenbrier County and in her research she interviewed Frances, "I am now (1824) sitting on the site where this fort once stood, not the least vestige of it however remains. It is now the property of Mrs. Welch, whose house and garden stands within the limits once occupied by this fort. From Mrs. Welch, who is now in her seventieth year, I collected these particulars. She is now sitting by me and goes on to relate: " That she was one of the earliest permanent settlers of Greenbrier and lived within a mile of the fort just mentioned, which was called Fort Savannah. She was then the wife of a Mr. Arbuckle who was in the famous battle of the Point, and spent all his life in guarding the settlements. There was, besides Fort Savannah, another about eight miles northeast of it called Donnallys Fort...." But to return to Mrs. Welch, the most extraordinary woman I ever saw, she has been and now is possessed of much personal beauty. Although this female has spent her life in the western wilds of America; often running from the Indians and cooped up in forts among people as rude as the savages themselves, yet she is eminently qualified to adorn the most polished assembly. Her pleasing and courtly manners are unequaled and every was bewitching; and a mind unimpaired, she possess all the gaiety and sprightliness of youth; but her predominate trait is benevolence. God knows what she must have been in youth for she is irresistible now."
