; I have so far found little primary evidence of the children of John/Henry and Mary Wittenberger, Sr. The family appears in multiple family trees posted on Ancestry, but with little or no actual evidence.


The three males living next to or near Henry, Sr. in the 1840 census (Blount Co., TN) whis sons. The evidence for a daughter named Catherine comes from my VAUGHT family research. The various family tree list multiple children. Some may actually be grandchildren. Other trees sometimes have duplicate given names that are hard to explain. Those names (ignoring conflicting dates) that seem to be most common are underlined and in bold font (however, there is a reasonable chance that these authors mostly just copied from each other, though frequency may have no correlation with probability).

G.      Hoffman [1980:475-77] gives a brief outline of three possible descendants of Mary Hoyle Whittenberger. With respect to Christina, he states: "I am not absolutely sure she was the daughter of Mary Hole." No Christina apprears on the other lists of children of Henry and Mary that I have found. A William and Joseph are found.

; 2 Mar 2019: I have identified John Henry (aka John George Henry) as the father of Catherine based on a positive link shown by Ancestry.com's "ThruLines" DNA matching tool which shows a positive match between my DNA and that of others linked to Catherine, and showing her father. See attached images.
     Based on this DNA match, I have added tentative ancestors for Catherine back two generations.

15 Aug 2021: New results on Ancstry's ThruLines show possible links to the HOYLE family and indicate that the mother of Catherine and wife of John Henry Whittenberg was a Mary Hoyle. (See attached image). However, I have not been able to find enough data to support the link for the moment. the birth dates given on various family trees for Mary Hoyle range from 1739 to 1765.
     There is a page posted on Ancestry from an unidentified book. This discusses "the daughters of Peter Hoyle" and says "Mary Hoyle, the daughter of the pioneer, married John Henry Whittenburg. I think the Whittenburges lived in N. C. till at least one of their daughters was grown up..." There is no other information to confirm that this is the same John Henry Whittenburg/Whittenberg who was the father of Catherine (Whittenbarger) Vaught.

Memo: An Abraham Wittenberger bought a parcel of land in the same area as Henry Wittenberger on 29 July 1808, the same day Henry ought two plots. Abraham might have been a son or a brother of Henry. The Thompson Family Tree on Ancestry shows an Abraham as the son of a John L. Whittengerg, brother of Henry Sr. However, there is no information that this is the same Abraham who was in Blount Co. 1800-1808.⁴²

John Henry Whittenberger Sr. and Mary Hoyle appeared in the census of 1830 at Western Division, Blount Co., Tennessee, USA; Henry appears on the same page as his likely sons: Henry (Jr.), Christoper (son or grandson), Matthew, and William.

John Henry Whittenberger Sr. and Mary Hoyle appeared in the census of 1840 at Eastern Division, Blount Co., Tennessee, USA; There is an elderly "Henry Whattenberger [sic] Snr" listed (line 28) next to a Matthew (line 27) Whattenbarger and a Henry Whittenbarger Jnr (line 29), and near a William Whatrtenbarger (line 24), all on p. 91 of the 1840 Federal Census for Blount Co. TN. Henry Jr., William and Matthew are all of the right age to be sons of Henry Sr.

     Michael Henry Michael Whittenberger was born circa 1710 at Germany (now); Some Ancestry family trees give the place of birth as "Cuxhaven, Cuxhaven, Niedersachsen", other as "Schwaben, Kelheim, Bayern". Reference: There is a record of a "Hans George WURTEBERGER" and a "H. Mifchael WURTENBERGER" arriving on the Ship "Shirley" (see attached images). However, this was in 1751, preumably several decades after Catherine's father and/or grandfather arrived. (G. Vaut) on 5 September 1751.⁴
