     ; The birth and death dates of James Howell and his wife Martha E. Stewart appear in the Pratt family Bible, along with the family of Alexis Briscoe Pratt (who was about the age of their children).
     Is there a family relationship between the PRATT and HOWELL families?
     Is Martha E. (Stewart) HOWELL the same Martha E. who was the daugter of Grief Stewart and Mary Polly Cahal? If the two Marthas are the same person, then she was the aunt of Alexis's wife, Mary Elizabeth McGinnis (who was the dau. of Martha's sister, Leurena/Lurena Ann Stewart McGinnis).
     It also seems that the year of birth (1822) and birth state (Virginia) for each Martha is the same based on available evidence.
     The HOWELL and PRATT families were all living close to each other in 1860 and 1870.
-- James & Martha HOWELL appear in the 1860 federal census for Warrenton, Twp Warren Co., MO and they are on the same page as Martha E. Stewart's brother, Peter P. Stewart.
-- In the 1860 census, Grief Steward and his family were living in Elkhorn Twp., just next to Warrenton/Elkhorn.
-- In the 1870 census for Elkhorn Twp, Warren Co. Alexis's parents and family were in Hickory Grove, just next to Warrenton/Elkhorn.
-- In the 1880 federal census for Elkhorn Twp, Martha HOWELL, and Alexis and Mary E (McGinnis) PRATT are living in the same household.
Based on this evidence, I have concluded that the two Martha E. Stewarts were the same person.^9,10,11,12 GAV-3.

     "I Martha Pratt of the County of Warren and State of Missouri do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say -
     "First it is my will that my funeral expenses and all my just debts be paid fully.
     "Secondly I direct that my body be decently buried near to my husband under the direction of my hereinafter named Executors and as to such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with I dispose of the same as follows.

     ; Loose Ends: Two Anne/Anna LANGTRYs? Here is some of the evidence.

1. Bryan & Rose [1876] is my primary source for the fact that Anna married William GRAY. In discussing the children of William and Kitty (Arbuckle) LANGTRYE, Bryan & Rose [1876:351] says: "Anna [LANGTRYE] was married first to William GRAY, of Callaway county, and second to Joseph ALLEN, of the same county."

2. There is a record of a marriage between an "Ann CRAIG and a Joseph ALLEN in 1841.

3. There is a record of an Ann LANGTRY who married a William L. CRAIG in Mason, WV in 1831:

4. There is a FindAGrave memorial for an Anna LANGTRY ALLEN in Old Auxvasse Presbyterian Church Cemetery (Auxvasse, Callaway Co.)
     She is shown as the wife of a William Lockhart CRAIG, which corresponds to the 1831 marriage.
     Lockhart died in 1836, which is after the first of William and Anna GRAY's children was born (Susan b1833), so this Ann LANGTRY may not be the Anna LANGTRY who m. William GRAY.
     The Ann LANGTRY ALLEN in the FindAGrave memorial is recorded as dying Oct. 14, 1843 with the inscription "Age 28 yrs, 10 mos, 4 days".
     However, Anna LANGTRY GRAY (wife of William) appears in the 1850 census with her children (but w/o her husband). So the Anna GRAY in the 850 census is not the Anne who died in 1843.

5. The grave marker shown on the FindAGrave memorial of Joseph ALLEN, the husband of Anne LANGTRY ALLEN, is also in the same Old Auxvasse Cemetery and has a second name inscribed on it: Hilary J. LANGTRY, died Oct. 18, 1813, aged 21 yrs., the same day as Joseph ALLEN died. The Anna LANGTRYE mentioned by Bryan & Rose, had a brother named Hillary J. LANGTRYE.

6. The mother of Anna Arbuckle LANGTRYE (presumably the Anna mentioned by Bryan & Rose), Catherine Brown "Kitty" Arbuckle married a second husband, James Kennerly CRAIG, after her first husband (William Henry LANGTRY) died in 1824.

7. The LANGTRYE and CRAIG families were both in Mason Co. William GRAY also came from Virginia, though the county is unknown.

8. A William GRAY appears in the 1840 federal and 1844 Mo State censuses for Callaway Co., MO.


So there appear to be three marriages:
     1831 - Ann LANGTRY m. William L. CRAIG in Mason Co., VA (now WV)
     bef 1833? - Anne LANGTRYE m. William GRAY in Callaway Co., MO (a dau. Susan W. GRAY was 12 May 1833)
     1841 - Ann CRAIG m. Joseph ALLEN in Callaway Co., MO,

However, William Gray seems to have been alive in 1844 and Ann GRAY in 1850.

It is possible (likely?) that Bryan & Rose were somehow wrong about the marriage of Anna Langtrye and William Gray:
     William married another Ann/Anna, other than the one who married Joseph ALLEN; or
     there were two Ann Langtry's.^{7,8,9,10,11,12,13}

"This family suffered much. William died when he was 31, leaving his widow with a 4 year old daughter and an 7 month old son. One week after his death, little Virginia who was too young to understand what death meant, went to meet her father, going in the direction from which he often came from work. In a short time the mother, missing the child, looked for her. She found the little bonnet not far away. Then she came upon the small girl crushed to death by the rail of a fence through which she had tried to climb. Virginia's grave is on the spot where she lost her life. Hers was the first grave in the Buffalo Cemetery. The mother died when she was 29, leaving her 7 year old son an orphan."¹⁴

     "The venerable and highly esteemed gentleman of whom we now speak was a farmer and stockraiser living one half mile south from Morrow, where he had a fine estate, well supplied with buildings and all necessary improvements and in addition to general farming he raised fine Shorthorn cattle and was a prosperous and leading citizen.
     "Joseph L. Craig was born in Virginia, on July 26, 1832, being the son of George and Mary D. (McMullin) Craig. The father was born in Virginia in 1795 and died in 1845. George Craig, grandfather of our subject, was also born in Virginia and married Kittie Kiraberly. His father, the Rev. John Craig, was born in Donagan, county of Antrim, north Ireland, and was descended from Scotch ancestry. He was a graduate of the Edinburg University and came to the United States in 1734, settling in Delaware. He was sent to Ft. Stanton, Augusta county, Virginia, by the Presbytery of Delaware and there he ministered
to his flock for twenty-five years. This was the first Presbyterian church of the Virginia settlement. He was a minister of note in his day and died in 1774. The mother of our subject was born in Virginia, in April, 1803, and died in 1836. Her father was of Scotch-Irish descent. Her mother, Jane Madison, was the daughter of William and Catherine Arbuckle and was a niece of Bishop John Madison, of Virginia, and of Governor George Madison, of Kentucky, and was a cousin of President Madison. William Arbuckle was born of Scotch parents in Virginia in 1752 and was a volunteer under General Lewis, founder of Lewisburg, Virginia, in his expedition against the Ohio Indians in 1774, participating in the battle of Point Pleasant at the mouth of the Great Kanawha river. Our subject went with his parents to Callaway county, Missouri, where he grew to manhood and was educated. When eighteen, in 1850, he went to California and gained a thousand dollars in the gold fields in one year. Returning home, he farmed and raised stock there until 1888, when he came west and settled on his present place on July 14, 1888. He continued here until his death, displaying thrift, industry and sagacity.
     "On April 9, 1856, in Callaway county, Missouri, Mr. Craig married Miss Mary E., daughter of Thomas G. and Rebecca B. (Snedicor) Jones. Mr. Jones was a farmer and merchant, born in Madison county, Kentucky, in 1795 and died in 1846, being of English and Welsh extraction. Mrs. Jones was born in Virginia in 1799 and died in 1835, being of Scotch-Irish extraction. Mrs. Craig was born in Callaway county, Missouri, on August 15, 1831, was liberally educated and taught for five years. She has eight brothers and sisters, but George W. Jones, of San Francisco, is the only one living. Mr. Craig has three brothers and sisters, all deceased. The following named children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Craig: Charles Henry, a physician in Webb City, Missouri; Jefferson E., deceased: Emma Julia MacKay, in Jefferson City, Missouri; Jennie Allen Miles, deceased; Stonewall Jackson, Idaho county; Mary Katherine Buckner, Jefferson City, Missouri; Albert B., a physician in Philadelphia; George E., principal of the public schools in Oakesdale, Washington; Annahalana R. Davis, of Nezperce; Joseph Franklin, principal of the public schools in Burlington, Washington. W. S. Davis, the husband of Mrs. A. Davis, died in the Philippine Islands recently. He was professor of English in an educational institution in the town of Moncada. Since his decease Mrs. Davis has returned to America. Mr. Craig joined the Masonic lodge in 1856. Mrs. Craig is a member of the Christian church and her husband is a member of the Methodist church, South. Mr. Craig had been a justice of the peace for three terms and was eminently satisfactory to his constituents. He was a stanch Democrat and had been committeeman for ten years. He died at his home March 27, 1903, and his remains were laid to rest in the I. O. O. F. cemetery, Morrow, Idaho.

Dear Brother:
Sometime during the winter I received a letter from you which pleased me very much, and I feel guilty in not answering it sooner. But better late than never. We are all well at this time, and all the friends are well so far as I know. I saw Father today. He is in his normal health. We have had a very long and hard winter and a late spring. I am getting nearly through planting corn. I saw a letter from John and I think the weather here and where you live has been very much the same, a little colder with you. The weat crops have been entirely destroyed by the freeze. Corn is scarce and high in Missouri.
Everything is high. Stock of all kinds is very high. I sold a lot of 3-year-old steers for 25 dollars, and they consider two good brood mares sell for $100 to $200.
It is a time of great prosperity in the country. John in his letter mad some inquuiries about prices ofland and property around. Fulton. Land is from $10 to $20 dollars per acre. There was a sale of lots joining Fulton of about 20 acres, laid off in 10 lots, that averaged $95,00. Improved lots sellhigh. Boarding in Fultonis $2.50 per week.
Edwin Greer, my son-in-law stayed with us through the winter. He left for Lawrence county a few weeks ago, and Elizabeth went with them on a visit. He owns about five or six hundred acres in that country. It is the County that Cyrus Poag live in. If you wish to Write to Cyrus, Mount Vernon is his post office. I was at his house last September. He is in a prosperous cocndition, with a pleasant family.
We have no regular preacher now. Mr. Laws was elelcted President of the collee and has to leave us. (Here he refers to Westminnster College at Fulton, Mo. which the Hamiltons helped found.) Of late a couple of th professors came out and lectured or preached as we might call it. Mr. Moon from Illinois, your old acquaintance, preached to us last Sunday. We want a preacher very much. We had a little revival in our church this spring. There were seventeen or eighteen joined the church and there have been additions to most of the churches round Fulton. There were about 10 at Contote, at Mexico 25, at Columbia some. Eliza's 3 oldest joined. (These churches to which he refers are all Presbyterian, as is Westminster.) That you may know whether they understand what they are doing, I will give you some of the questions and answers to the second boy. After the usual questions on experimental religion, he was asked, "In the sacrament of the Lord's supper what does the wine represent? Answer, The blood of Christ. What do you understand to be the meaning of faith? Answer, It is to beliee that what God says, He will do. What the bread? Answer, The body of Christ. The bread is broken and the wine is poured. What does that mean? Answer, The broken body of Christ and shed blood of Christ." Which to me was very satisfactory. (This boy must have been Hames Henry Langtry.) My o wn children and my wife's are all in the church but the 2 youngest.
Anunt Rebecca Wilson has been in bad helath for a long time. I suppose you have heard of the death of Aunt Bellana Hamilton. There is a son of William Baskin come to this county this spring. I hear of a good many Virginia folks coming in the rfall, Moses, Meen and Arnold among the rest. You hear dof the death of Mr. Clark, I suppose. Jame Baskin expects to come to Missouri in a year or so. Old Mother Baskin is very frail.
Iliza's oldest son is at college. Thomas Allen's also. I am badly situated for schools having to send my children away from home. I wish you would keep up the habit of writingme, as it is a great satisfaction to me to get a letter from you. If you stay where you are and we live, I expect in a few years to pay you a visit.
I must close with the wish for your prosperity and hope that you and I may solive that when we leave this world we may reach the better world where the wicked cease to trouble and the weary find eternal rest.
