Jane Lockhart1

     Jane Lockhart was born in 1746 at Augusta Co., Virginia, USA.2 She married Capt. Matthew Arbuckle Sr., son of James Arbuckle and Margaret Thompson, before 1768
;
His 1st wife. per Dayton [1942:165]: "Captain Arbuckle was twice married. His first wife was Jane Lackhart, by whome he had two sons, Charles, who became a leading citizen and merchant of Greenbrier (having a son, Colonel Charles) and John, who moved to Ohio."
     According to their Find A Grave memorials, their oldest child listed, Charles, was born in 1768.1,3,2
Jane Lockhart was buried in 1771 at Craig-Douglas Cemetery, Lewisburg, Greenbrier Co., Virginia (now West Virgina), USA;

     BIRTH     1746, Augusta County, Virginia, USA
     DEATH     1771 (aged 24–25), Augusta County, Virginia, USA
     Jane LOCKHART was born 1746 in Augusta County, Virginia the daughter Jacob Lockhart Sr of Scotland and Mary Elizabeth Cohown Lockhart of Pennsylvania. Jane was baptized on 28 Aug 1747 in Old Stone Church, Lewisburg, Augusta County, Virginia. Jane had four siblings Lt James, Jacob Jr, Elizabeth "Elsie" and Levy Peter Lockhart.
     Jane Lockhart married Capt. Mathew Arbuckle in 1768. Capt. Mathew Arbuckle was born 1740/1741 in Scotland. Jane Lockhart and Capt. Mathew Arbuckle had the following children, Charles Arbuckle born 1768 and John Arbuckle born 1771.
     I have read several accounts of her death, one that she died a month after giving birth to John. Another that she died in 1781, 10 years later.
     The fact that she only has the two children is a point in favor of the 1771 date. In those days left with small children, men tended to marry soon after their wives died. He would probably not have waited twelve years. If her children were older John being about ten, Mathew could take a little time.

     Jane's father Jacob Lockhart Sr. died in 1771 and she is mentioned as living in his will, The marriage record for Matthew and Frances Lawrence is proof she died before 1774.
     There is also a differing of opinion of when she was born. If any one has definite proof. It would be greatly appreciated. That being said she still deserves her memorial.

     Reference: From OK Historical Society: ARBUCKLE, MATTHEW (1778–1851).
     "Matthew Arbuckle was a professional soldier assigned to the Indian Territory frontier from 1822 until his death in 1851. The second of four sons of Matthew and Frances Hunter Arbuckle, he was born on December 28, 1778, in Greenbrier County, Virginia. His father distinguished himself in the battle at Point Pleasant in Lord Dunmore's War (1774) and later in the American Revolution. Little is known of Arbuckle's childhood, but military records indicate that he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Third Infantry Regiment on March 3, 1799. His early military career is equally obscure. Advanced to first lieutenant within eight months, he was transferred to the Second Infantry Regiment in 1802, promoted to captain in 1806, and returned to the Third Infantry Regiment as a major in 1812.
     "His regiment was assigned to posts in the South during the War of 1812. In 1814, promoted to lieutenant colonel, he became the unit's second-ranking officer. One account places him as an aide on the staff of Maj. Gen. Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans. Arbuckle and the Third Infantry remained in the South under Jackson's command after the war. In November 1817, during the opening phase of Jackson's First Seminole War, Arbuckle led a "successful expedition against the Fowltown Indians" in southern Georgia.
     "In 1820 Arbuckle was promoted to colonel and given command of the Seventh Infantry Regiment. The next year he led four of its companies to reinforce Fort Smith on the Arkansas River. In 1824 he moved the regiment farther west, establishing Cantonments (later Forts) Gibson and Towson, the first U.S. military outposts in present Oklahoma. As commander at Fort Gibson he was responsible for maintaining peace among the indigenous and immigrating Indians as well as for constructing facilities and roads. After ten years of "faithful service" as a colonel, in 1830 he was breveted to the rank of brigadier general.
     "In 1834, on the eve of the Dodge-Leavenworth Expedition onto the southern plains, Gen. Henry Leavenworth replaced Arbuckle as regional commander. After twelve years on the frontier Arbuckle returned to Virginia. He had believed that he had departed Fort Gibson for good, but Leavenworth's death left the post without a commander until Arbuckle was ordered to return. Despite the temporary loss of most of his troops to Fort Jesup during the Texas Revolution, he maintained order as the pace of Indian removal accelerated. By the end of the 1830s the relocation of the southeastern Indians was largely complete, but internal dissension threatened to ignite civil war within several tribes. Nonetheless, in 1841, when he left Fort Gibson permanently, he was able to report, "I have maintained peace on this frontier."
     "Arbuckle was transferred to Baton Rouge to head a military district that included no troops of the line. Although one of the army's highest ranking officers, he played no significant role in the Mexican War, but in 1848 he was reassigned to Fort Smith as commander of the newly created Seventh Military District. The following year his troops accompanied gold seekers bound to California along a route he selected south of the Canadian River. That same year, long-time rival Zachary Taylor became president of the United States and urged the War Department to abandon Fort Smith, a proposal Arbuckle opposed. Taylor died before plans to relinquish the post had been implemented, and the War Department redesignated it as headquarters of the Seventh Military District and restored Arbuckle to command. He was making plans to protect Americans traveling to California when a cholera epidemic swept the region, claiming many lives, including that of Arbuckle, who died on June 11, 1851.
     "Just before his death, to protect the California Road troops under Arbuckle's command established an outpost on Wildhorse Creek, four miles above the Washita River in present Garvin County, Oklahoma. Subsequently, the post was named Fort Arbuckle in his honor. Although the fort was abandoned in 1870, the name had been transferred to the nearby hills, which are still known as the Arbuckle Mountains. Brad Agnew

; McCue [1912:185] says he "m Miss Clendenin."1,2
Thomas Arbuckle died on 29 September 1838 at Henry Co., Missouri, USA, at age 58.4
Thomas Arbuckle was buried after 29 September 1838 at High Tebo Arbuckle Farm, Henry Co., Missouri, USA;
From Find A Grave website:
     BIRTH     15 Jan 1780, Greenbrier County, West Virginia, USA
     DEATH     29 Sep 1838 (aged 58), Henry County, Missouri, USA
     According to the family Bible Thomas was the third of four sons born to Captain Matthew and Frances Hunter Arbuckle and he was born on January 15, 1780 in Virginia. This part of Virginia is now Greenbrier County, West Virginia. He was probably born in Lewisburg as that is where his father was in charge of the local fort (Fort Arbuckle). A middle name of Hunter has never appeared on any known recorded document and the use of same is in question and should not be used.
     It was here that he would marry Jane Davis, a local girl who was the daughter of John and Jane Clendenin Davis. The Clendenin family has quite a history in Greenbrier where her mother was kidnapped by the Indians and raised by them for a number of years. Thomas and Jane were married on a Tuesday, Christmas Day, 1804 in Lewisburg.
     As was tradition with the Arbuckle's to constantly move West the family left Greenbrier about 1809 and moved to Christian County, Kentucky. Jane's widowed mother also settled nearby as did his brother, Samuel. There they became active members of the Unitarian Church. When the War of 1812 broke out both brothers served briefly as a part of the Kentucky Mounted Volunteer Militia.
     He and Jane would have eleven known children, most born in Kentucky. Cyrus P., Alexander Welsh, Nancy Welsh, Mathew, James Alexander, Samuel, Jane Frances, Mary Ann, Sarah B. and Martha. When Jefferd was researching and writing his book about the history of Thomas' father, Capt. Matthew, he cited in error that Jane died with the birth of Martha. It was Jane's mother, Jane, who died in Christian County that same year. Thomas and Jane Davis Arbuckle was still living when Thomas died. She is named in his will and is shown on the 1840 census in Missouri. The place and date of her death is yet unknown but her younger children lived with Matthew's family for some time and the family Bible went down through this line so it seems she lived near Matthew in Windsor and they are probably all buried there.
     Thomas and Jane and all of their children with the exception of Alexander Welsh Arbuckle moved to Missouri between 1830 and 1834. He settled on Tebo Creek 4 miles west and SW of Windsor Twp, Rives (now Henry) County. He is recorded as having been the first white settler and he served as county judge when the county was organized in 1834.
     Thomas died in September 1838 and his will is the first one recorded in Henry County. He named his children and asked that James and Matthew care for their mother and unmarried sisters. He also requested to be buried at High Tebo, the family name for their farm. Two years after his death the farm was sold to John Fitzhugh Thorton. Mr. Thorton lived on the land until his death in 1861 and his family stayed on for a few more years. The farm was again sold in 1911 to a Mr. Funk.
     There never was an Arbuckle Cemetery on the farm as has been created by someone using erroneous information from my on-line family tree. I made that note in error many years ago and regret it not knowing that all in my tree would be subject to copy. Thomas is the only known burial there. Jane may have died shortly after the 1840 census and she may be buried there also but is seems unreasonable that any of their children were as the farm was no longer owned by them. Any information obtained from the Historical Society regarding a Lost Arbuckle Cemetery has been collected from recent online trees that copied my error and was not known to the same Society in 1991 or 1997 when I personally visited there. All information on High Tebo and Thomas' request to be buried there is from family history, Bibles, and recorded documents in the possession of direct family members.
