Mary Blackwood Copeland died on 30 January 1915 at Winameg, Fulton Co., Ohio, USA, at age 90; Obituary from Fulton Co. Tribune:
Passing of a Pioneer
"Mrs. Mary B. C. Howard died at her home at Winameg last Saturday morning January 30th, after an illness of less than two weeks. Up to last year Mrs. Howard had spent a portion of each year, usually the Winter, in the Howard Home on Prospect street in this village; the summers Mrs. Howard spent at the Winameg home where she was surrounded by the mementos of the years that are gone and the grandchildren who linked her to the years that were. Because of her long residence in this vicinity, the varied experiences through which she had passed and her association with her husband D. W. H. Howard in his relations with the Indians who formerly occupied this section, as an agent of the government, she was by far one of the most interesting persons in Fulton county. More than this, no one could be long in her presence without realizing that he had come in contact with a beautiful character; gentle and refined and yet strong in loyalty to noble ideals and in lofty purposes, a character whose influence was bound to make an impression for good upon all those who came within its reach. Such pioneers as Mrs. Howard have made an impress upon the communities of the State that is lasting and that impress is seen, by those who look beneath the surface of present community life, as that which holds us to the higher and nobler aims and ideals.
"Those who tamed the wilderness and laid the foundations of prosperity and progress did more, they instilled the spirit of kindness, justice, neighborliness and helpfulness into the generations that were to succeed them and enjoy the fruits of their labors. Such lives as these form the richest part of the heritage of our present American life.
"Mary Blackwood Copeland was born near Ovid, New York, May 4th, 1824, she died at her farm home in Winameg January 30th, 1915, aged 90 years.
"In early life she moved with her parents to Deposit, New York, where her father, a physician, holding diplofas [sic] from Medical Colleges of Glasgow and Edenburg [sic], practiced for years. A few years later the family went to the undeveloped state of Michigan where they settled near Ypsilanti. Here she continued her education under the instruction of Dr. Thomas Blackwood. In this place at the age of sixteen she taught her first school. Soon she went to Perrysburg, Ohio, where she attended school in the winter and taught during the summer.
"New Grand Rapids, she met Dresden W. H. Howard, a prosperous young farmer to whom she was married in November 1842, at Monroe, Michigan. Many and varied were the experiences of her early married life on the Maumee river. Ten years later she came with her husband to the Howard family home in Winameg. Much might be written concerning the long years during which she and her companion labored together for the development of the county about them. After years of friendly and useful intercourse with his fellow countrymen and the Red Men, Mr. Hard left his wife in 1897 to complete life alone.
"Her retiring natures, nobility of character, integrity and honesty of purpose together with the influence of her Scotch Presbyterian training will long have an impression upon her children and childrens' [sic] children.
"She has left a son, O.E.M. Howard of San Diego, California, and one daughter, Mrs. Agnes H. McClarren; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren and other near relatives who will recall her as a beautiful Christian character.
"The funeral services were held at the home February 1st, and were conducted by Rev. W. T. Williams of the Wauseon Congregational church. Her body was placed to rest beside her husband under the trees they had planted and watched together."5,3

Augustus married Ara Ann Strong on 5 Jun 1850 in Seneca Co., Ohio. He was twenty 24 years old. The couple had four children together--Lucius (b.1851), Dwight Leroy (1854-1927), Harry/Henry (b.1860) and Charlotte "Lottie" (b.1862). Newlyweds Augustus and Ann appeared together on the 1850 Census, living in My Division (the Plymouth area), Marshall, Indiana, enumerated on 19 Sep that year. Around the first of the year, Ann would have discovered that she was expecting their first child, son Lucius, born in August of 1851. Son Leroy would follow in 1854, and son Harry in 1860.
The five of them appeared together on the 1860 Census, living in West Twp. (part of Plymouth), Marshall, Indiana, where A.G. was farming for a living. Harry was five months old and enumerated simply as "Baby". Besides A.G., Ann and the three boys, A.G.'s 25-year-old brother John G. Armstrong was living with the family. Helping Ann out with the three children was 18-year-old live-in housemaid Lydia Vancamp.
In 1862, A.G. and Ann welcomed the only daughter they would have. Little Lottie joined her three brothers, aged 2, 8 and 11. Their happiness would have been short lived, however, as the unthinkable happened the following year and A.G. died on 9 May 1863 at age 38.
