W. H. Todd of this city yesterday received a letter from relatives in Minnesota, informing him that his uncle, Joseph A. Todd, had died in that city early in the week. Deceased will be remembered by many of the old residents of Deadwood and the Hills, for he was among the pioneers of this section, having come to the country with the Argonants early in 1876. During the later part of that year and 1877 he was in a partnership with the late Henry Rozenkranz at Central City in the grocery business. He afterwards took up a ranch in the St. Onge district, which he farmed for a number of years, later leaving for the east, making his home in Minneapolis or in the vicinity of the city. Many people who visit the First National bank of this city admire the big elk's head which adorns one of the walls of the business office of the bank, it being the finest speciman that has ever been seen in the city. The elk which at one time wore that head was killed in 1878 by Mr. Todd in the Bear Lodge mountains and the head, after it had been mounted was presented by him to one of the officials of the bank. Many will remember him, for at one time he was prominent in the political and business life of the Black Hills, especially in Lawrence county, and they will regret that he has called by death. ----Deadwood Pioneer Times.
