Malise/Mallus (?) 1st Earl of Strathearn1,2

M, #91783, d. after 14 June 1141
Last Edited31 Oct 2020
     Malise/Mallus (?) 1st Earl of Strathearn died after 14 June 1141.2,3
      ; Per POMS:
     "MEDIEVAL NAME: Máel Ísu
     MODERN GAELIC NAME: Maol Ìosa
     BIOGRAPHY: Handbook of British Chronology, 512: Malise (Mael Ísu) was styled earl of Strathearn between December 1123 and April 1124, though this document's authenticity is doubtful. He was certainly styled earl 1128-36 and died after 14 June 1141.
     FLORUITS: 1131 × 1140
     RELATED PLACE: Strathearn”.3

; Per Med Lands:
     "Strathearn was, with Menteith, one of the seven original provinces of Scotland in the 9th century. It covered what was later the southern part of the county of Perth. Nothing is known of the Mormaers of Strathearn until the early 12th century when Mallus [Malise] was one of the six signatories of the [1114/15] charter of Scone who signed as "comes".
     "MALLUS [Malise], son of --- (-after 14 Jun 1141). Mormaer of Strathearn. "Alexander nepos regis Alexandri, Beth comes, Gospatricius Dolfini, Mallus comes, Madach comes, Rothri comes, Gartnach comes, Dufagan comes, Willelmus frater regine, Edwardus constabularius, Gospatricius filius Walthef, Ufieth Alfricus pincerna" witnessed the charter dated to [1114/15] under which "Alexander…rex Scottorum filius regis Malcolmi et regine Margerete et…Sibilla regina Scottorum filia Henrici regis Anglie" reformed Scone Abbey[642]. "…Mallus comes…" subscribed the possibly spurious charter dated to [1120] of "Alexander…Rex Scottorum…Sibilla regina Scottorum…"[643]. "…Malis comite…" witnessed the charter dated 1124 under which "Alexander…Rex Scottorum" granted jurisdiction to the prior of Scone[644]. "…Malise comes…" witnessed a charter dated to [1128] by which "David…Rex Scottorum" made grants to the church of Dunfermline[645]. "…Malis comite…" witnessed a charter dated 1130 by which "David…Rex Scottorum" confirmed the shire of Kirkcaldy to the church of Dunfermline[646].
     "m ---. The name of Mallus’s wife is not known."

     Sir William de Lindsay Lord of Lamberton was born circa 1200.1 He married Alice de Lancaster, daughter of Gilbert Fitz Roger Fitz Reinfrid 4th Baron Kendal and Hawise (Helwise) de Lancaster Baroness Kendal, circa 1220.1,4,5

      ;
Per Genealogics: "Sir William de Lindsay, feudal lord of Lamberton, was the son of Sir Walter de Lindsay, feudal lord of Lamberton. About 1220 William married Alice de Lancaster, daughter and co-heir of William de Lancaster, feudal lord of Kendal, thus acquiring the territories of Windermere, Grasmere etc. Their son Walter inherited Lamberton, and their younger son John became bishop of Glasgow."1

; Per Med Lands:
     "WILLIAM de Lindsay, son of WALTER de Lindsay & his wife --- (-1247). Balfour Paul states that William de Lindsay Lord of Lamberton, son of Walter de Lindsay, witnessed a charter of King Alexander II[904].
     "m ([1220]) ALICE de Lancaster, daughter of GILBERT FitzRoger & his wife Hawise de Lancaster (-before 1247). A manuscript describing the descendants of “Ivo Tayleboyse” names “Helewisiam primogenitam…maritata Petro de Brus seniori, Alicia…maritata Willo de Lindesay et Serotam…maritata Alano de Multono” as the three sisters of "Willielmum de Lancastre…tertius et ultimus"[905]. Her parentage and marriage are confirmed by a writ dated Thursday after Epiphany "56 Hen III", after the death of her son "Walter de Lyndesay", which records "a moiety of the lands which were of William de Lonecastre his uncle, one of whose heirs he was, excepting the dower of Agnes sometime the wife of the said William"[906].
