     "OSTE [III] de Trazegnies “Avunculus” ([1175/80?]-[31 May 1234/Aug 1235]). “Oston de Trasignies” [Oste [IV], see below] notified that “Nicolas de Naste” donated “decima de Naste” to Notre-Dame de Cambrai by charter dated 4 Jan 1214, witnessed by “Osto de Trasignies avunculus meus...”[2283]. Avoué d’Apelteres et de Meerbeek: “Osto dictus de Trasenis advocatus d’Apelteres” and “Hosto dictus de Trasines advocatus de Merbecca” are named in charters dated 1219 and 1220, one of which also names “Dame Mactilde de bonne mémoire sa mère et Herbrand chevalier et chanoine de Ninove”[2284]. Engelbert [III] Seigneur d’Enghien donated property by charter dated Mar 1224, sealed by "Sigeri filii mei et Ostonis patrui mei"[2285]. Seigneur de Contrecœur [Wedergraet, near Aalst[2286]]: a charter dated 1225 names “Ostonis de Trasegnies militis domini de Contrecuer”[2287]. “Osto de Trasegnies dictus avunculus” confirmed donations of “terre...in territorio de Abechies” to Cambron made by “bone memorie Osto pater meus dominus de Trasegnies...et Mathildis tunc temporis uxoris eius” by charter dated Jul 1227[2288]. This document indicates that the family relationship noted in the 4 Jan 1214 developed into a nickname over time. “Oste de Trasegnies dictus Avunculus” donated property “in parochia de Apeltren...ab Olivero Runschuit” to Ninove, with the consent of “uxoris meæ Osiliæ”, by charter dated 1229[2289]. A charter dated 1230 names “Ostonis de Trazennies avunculi”[2290]. Oste granted a charter dated 31 May 1234 to the inhabitants of Meerbeek[2291]. He is named as deceased in the Aug 1235 charter of his son quoted below. m OSILIE, daughter of ---. “Oste de Trasegnies dictus Avunculus” donated property “in parochia de Apeltren...ab Olivero Runschuit” to Ninove, with the consent of “uxoris meæ Osiliæ”, by charter dated 1229[2292].

Helvide (?)1

Last Edited6 Aug 2020
     Helvide (?) married Oste I de Trazegnies.1

Helvide (?) died after 1135.1
      ; Per Med Lands:
     "OSTE [I] de Trazegnies [de Blicquy] [de Silly] (-[killed in battle 1146]). Oste [I] is named in the 4 Apr 1184 charter issued by his grandson Oste [II] for Floreffe, quoted below. Straten Ponthoz dates the earlier donation by Oste [I], referred to in that charter, to 1123[2226]. The primary source which confirms that date has not been identified, although it appears compatible with the limited information available about the chronology of Oste [I]’s life. No reference to the earlier donation has been found in Barbier’s Histoire de Floreffe[2227]. The dates of the following references suggest that they refer to Oste [I], although as noted above it is possible that some or all of them relate to Oste [de Blicquy]. “Oston de Bliqui, Thirry de Ligne...” witnessed the 1130 charter under which “Mainsende...” donated herself as a serf to Saint-Ghislain[2228]. Liétard Bishop of Cambrai confirmed that “Gilla castellana de Bruxella, Gillardus de Ruez, Heluidis de Fellui” had donated property “in parrochia de Senefia” to Bonne Espérance, with the consent of “Hostone de Bilchi de cuius feodo...”, by charter dated 1131[2229]. “Isaac issu de haute famille” donated a serf to Saint-Ghislain, for the souls of “mon père Gossuin de Monse et...ma mère Ide”, with the consent of “mes frères Nicolas et Gossuin et ma sœur Ermengarde avec son mari Gautier”, by charter dated 1135, sealed by “...Hoston de Bilchi...”[2230]. Gauthier de Silly “in senectute sua” donated a serf to Saint-Ghislain by charter dated 1135, witnessed by “Otton de Blicquy...”[2231]. A later charter refers to an earlier donation by Oste [I] which is probably dated to [1135]: by charter dated 1163, Henri Bishop of Liège notified that “Hosto Trasiniensis dominus ac eius uxor Heluidis” had donated “quendam desertum...Herlaimont...” to Floreffe, that after they died they left “heredum parvulum Gilonem” who (“ipse vero miles...ipsum Gilonem”) later appropriated “decimam” from Floreffe but then confirmed the donation for “patris et matris sue anime” [further details of this document are shown below under Gilles [I]][2232]. The dating of this earlier donation is uncertain, but it was made before 21 Jan 1138 when Pope Innocent II confirmed the possessions of Floreffe, including “la cense d’Herlaimont”[2233]. "Godescaldus de Vileirs canonicus et frater noster" donated land "apud Bellummontem" to Vicogne, in the presence of "...Ostone de Bilchi...", by undated charter dated to before 1147[2234]. Seigneur de Trazegnies: the Chronicon Diestense records that “Arnoldus [...vel Arnulphus dominus de Diest], domini de Wezemael, de Rotselaer, de Bierbaco, de Leefdale, Hoerne, Transingys, Ravies” were killed in battle in 1146[2235]. The reliability of this source may be questionable and the information has not been corroborated elsewhere. Although this document does not name the seigneur de Trazegnies in question, the [1205] Chronicle of Liessies abbey records that Gilles [I] “pro qua factione patris eius Bacconis occisi, adversus Ebalum de Gociliis viriliter exercuit” (“combattit vaillamment contre Ebale de Gosselies pour venger la mort de son père qui avait été tué”)[2236]. Whether or not the date is precise, the report is consistent with the 1163 charter which confirms that Oste left “heredum parvulum” when he died.
     "m HELVIDE, daughter of --- (-after [1135]). Her name is confirmed by the 1163 charter quoted above. Straten Ponthoz discusses the possible family origin of the wife of Oste [I], noting that her son Gilles [I] is named in 1183 as “frère - utérin sans doute - de Godefroid châtelain de Bruxelles” [no source cited][2237]. It is unlikely that the Trazegnies/Aa connection was through Gilles’s mother: Godefroy’s mother (wife of Franco [III] Châtelain of Brussels, see the document BRABANT, LOUVAIN), probably the daughter of Leon [II] Heer van de Aa, was probably born in [1135/40] and, given the estimated birth date of Gilles [I] shown below, could not have been his mother even by an earlier marriage. Another possibility, that “frère” indicated Gilles [I]’s brother-in-law, is discussed below. An alternative case is that Gilles’s mother was closely related to Gauthier [I] d’Oisy Seigneur d’Avesnes: as noted below, the [1205] Chronicle of Liessies abbey records that “Gautier d’Avesnes avec lequel il était plus proche parent qu’avec le comte” claimed Gilles’s guardianship from Baudouin IV Comte de Hainaut. As noted below, one explanation for the apparent age difference between her son Gilles [I] and her possible son Anselme is that the two were uterine brothers, Anselme being born from an earlier marriage of their mother (to the “seigneur de Péronne-lès-Binche“? [seigneurie inherited by Anselme])."

Simon von Tecklenburg Graf von Tecklenburg died on 8 August 1202; Killed in batle.1,2
      ; Per Genealogics:
     “Simon was born about 1140, the only son of Heinrich, Graf von Tecklenburg, and Eilika von Oldenburg. In 1156 he succeeded his father as count of Tecklenburg. With his wife Oda von Altena, daughter of Eberhard, Graf von Altena, Graf von Berg, and Adelheid von Arnsberg, he had six children of whom Otto and Oda would have progeny.
     “In 1173 he gave up the important stewardship of Münster. He was for years a loyal supporter of the Hohenstaufen, and in 1174 he took part in Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa's campaign in Italy. He fought as a military leader for the prince-electorate of Cologne in Saxony, Holstein and Italy, and took part in the Third Crusade in Palestine, and his career marked the high point of his house. He stood against Heinrich 'the Lion', Herzog von Sachsen und Bayern, over his brutal expansionism and he faithfully supported Archbishop Philip of Cologne, whose vassal he was.
     “Simon was captured at the Battle of Halerfeld on 1 August 1179, and had to submit to Heinrich 'the Lion'. In 1182 he became steward of the cathedral of Osnabrück. He founded the family abbey of Essen, and became its steward as well as steward of the abbeys of Metelen and Malgarten. He had to temporarily pledge Tecklenburg to the archbishop of Cologne and in 1196 he held the title of Erbschenk from the archbishop of Mainz. It was a time of devastating feuds with the bishops of Osnabrück and Münster and the counts of Ravensburg. He gave up Iburg to Osnabrück, and he created the foundations for good administration of his lands, appointing the first Tecklenburg notaries. He opposed Emperor Heinrich VI's plan to make the imperial crown hereditary, in 1198 he supported the Welf Otto IV von Braunschweig, son of Heinrich 'the Lion', in the conflict with Philipp von Hohenstaufen, son of Friedrich Barbarossa, over the German throne, and in 1201 he became Otto's chancellor. This sparked a major feud with the counts of Ravensberg, over whom he was victorious. He gained the Ravensberg fiefs of the archbishops of Cologne and Bremen and the bishop of Paderborn.
     “Simon died in battle on 8 August 1202.”.1

Otto von Tecklenburg Graf von Tecklenburg died on 11 September 1263.1,2
      ; Per Genealogics:
     “Otto was born about 1185, the son of Simon, Graf von Tecklenburg, and Oda von Altena. In 1202 he succeeded his father as count of Tecklenburg under the guardianship of his mother, and he gave his brother Adolf the bishopric of Osnabrück. On 27 July 1214 he fought the French at the Battle of Bouvines, was captured and had to pledge allegiance to the new emperor Friedrich II who replaced the defeated Otto IV.
     “With his wife Mechtild von Holstein, daughter of Adolf III, Graf von Holstein, and Adelheid von Querfurt, he had three sons and four daughters, of whom three daughters would have progeny.
     “In 1217-19 Otto was in Egypt and took part in the Fifth Crusade. He gave asylum to the murderers of Archbishop Engelbert of Cologne, for which he was outlawed and excommunicated in 1225/6, and lost Iburg and the stewardship of Osnabrück, but he prevented the planned destruction of his rule by the archbishops of Cologne and the bishops of Osnabrück. He provoked wild conflicts with the first Westphalian city leagues as well as the bishops of Münster and the counts of Ravensberg, and in 1225 he joined the League of Rhine Cities.
     “Despite his propensity for feuding, Otto was an excellent organiser and administrator, and secured his lands by building castles. Through purchase and exchange he consolidated the core land holding of Tecklenburg, and he acquired customs and coinage rights, but he pledged the stewardship of Malgarten to this abbey, an important loss. In 1246 _Dominium de Tecklenburch_ appeared for the first time in the sources to describe the extensive consolidation of the lands of his rule. In 1231 he had had to return most of the land acquisitions of his father and to confine himself mainly to Oldenburg and Rietberg. However in 1246 he was again victorious over Ravensberg and the bishop of Münster, who had been concerned over the further growth in his power through the acquisition of Vechta and Vlotho, and he gained back all the holdings he had lost.
     “By 1248 he was hardly active, probably broken by the death in 1247 of his son Heinrich III, whom he had made his co-ruler.
     “Otto died on 11 September 1263.”.1

Adolf III von Holstein Graf von Holstein1

;
His 1st wife.2 Adolf III von Holstein Graf von Holstein was born circa 1160.1 He married Adelheid von Querfurt before May 1189
;
His 2nd wife.3,1
Adolf III von Holstein Graf von Holstein died on 3 January 1225.1
      ; Per Genealogics:
     “Adolf was born about 1160, the only son of Adolf II, Graf von Holstein, and Mechtilde von Schwarzburg-Käfernburg, a daughter of Sizzo, Graf von Schwarzburg, Graf von Käfernburg. He succeeded his father in 1164, initially under the guardianship of his mother.
     “In 1182 Adolf married Adelheid von Assel, daughter of Otto, Graf von Assel, and Salome von Heinsberg. She died childless in 1185, and before May 1189 he married Adelheid von Querfurt, daughter of Burchard II, Burggraf von Magdeburg, and Gräfin Mathilde von Tonna. Of their five children, Adolf IV and Mechtild would have progeny.
     “Adolf at first supported Heinrich 'the Lion', duke of Saxony. He accompanied him on his expedition against Philipp von Heinsberg, archbishop of Cologne and a brother of his own first mother-in-law, and he fought at the Battle of Halerfeld on 1 August 1180 (to the north-west of Osnabrück) at the side of Bernhard I, Graf von Ratzeburg, when he received from Heinrich 'the Lion' the decisive rights in the region of the Middle Weser which formed the basis of the county of Schauenburg.
     “Later in 1180, however, Adolf defected from Heinrich, who thereupon drove him from Holstein. Adolf attached himself to Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa, with whose help he regained his lordship in 1181 after the fall of Heinrich. In 1188 Friedrich turned down Adolf's claim to the town of Lübeck. Adolf accompanied him on the Third Crusade. In August 1190 he reached Tyre, where he left the crusading army and returned to Holstein to defend his lands against Heinrich 'the Lion', who had in the meantime returned from exile.
     “The reign of Adolf III coincided with Denmark's attempts at expansion under King Knut IV and his brother and successor Valdemar II Sejr. Adolf lost the Battle of Stellau in 1201 and was later taken prisoner in Hamburg by Valdemar, whose expansion was successful for some decades. In captivity Adolf was forced to renounce his title to the county of Holstein in 1203 in order to gain his freedom, and on his release he retired to the county of Schauenburg. The reconquest of Holstein was left for his son and heir Adolf IV.
     “In about 1224, at the request of Konrad von Rüdenberg, bishop of Minden, Adolf III relinquished the stewardship of Wennigsen Abbey. The deed recording this act is the first surviving written record of this monastery.
     “Adolf died on 3 January 1225.”.1
