     ; NB.
; The fate of William2 F. McLEAN’s sixth child, James3 McClean (William2, John1) is uncertain. The source of his birth and death dates are from the family Bible of Sarah2 (ARMSTRONG) McLEAN, his grandmother.ii McLean [nd] No middle initial is given in that record. The date of birth is written clearly, and reads October 18th 1816. However, the date of death has been crossed out and changed. The crossed-out portion may read “September the 13th. The added date is “October 8, 1852.” This segment of the Bible page is shown below.
Figure 269:     Clipping from Family Bible of Sarah2 (ARMSTRONG) McLEAN Showing the Entry for James3 McClean (William2, John1)iiii McLean [nd]
[Image of original bible entry is attached.]

Identifying what happened to James3 McClean (William2, John1) may lie in solving the following puzzle involving the records of three men named James McLean who may or may not have been the same man. Here is the evidence discovered so far.
A. Who was the real James McLean?
There are two other James McLeans11 For clarity in the following dicussion, “James3 McClean (William2, John1)” refers to the son of William F. McLEAN (John1); “James McLean #1” refers to the James F. Mclean buried in Wayne County, New York; while “James McLean #2” refers to the James F. Mclean buried in White County, Indiana. for whom records have been found, either of whom might have been James3 McClean (William2, John1), though neither is a certain match. What adds to the confusion is that though the vital dates for these two other James’s are not exactly the same, there is some evidence that all three men may have been the same person.
James McLean #1:
There is a James F. McLean buried in Wayne County, New York.
ii FindAGrave.com Memorial #21259309. His grave marker read “Died Sept. 13, 1852 Aged 35 yrs. 10 ms & 21 ds.”iiii An image of the grave marker is posted on FindAGrave.com Memorial #21259309. The date of death is identical to one possible interpretation of the date of birth of James3 McClean (William2, John1) in the family Bible. The date of birth calculated from the grave marker inscription is 23 October 1816, only seven days different from that given in the McLean family Bible.
Further research on this man has found a probate record in Wayne County, dated 19 January 1853, for a James F. McLean who had died intestate and who had a wife named Lydia A. who was named heir.
ii[:ITAL]iiii Ancestry.com NYWills: Record seen on 3 April 2021 at https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=8800&h=2841751;
There is also an 1850 census Wayne County listing for a James F. McLean with a wife listed as Lydia A. There are two children listed in in this household: a daughter, Betsy, aged 11 (i.e., born ca 1839) and a three month old son, William C. (i.e., born ca April 1850). It is possible that the James who died and was buried in 1852 was the James who died intestate with a wife named Lydia A., and also the same James F. listed in the 1850 census. No further record of the daughter, Betsy McLean, has been found.

Date of Census: 26 July 1850

The presence of thirty-four year old Asa Swartout (Swarthout) in the same household with James is a clue that this James F. McLean #1 could well have been
James3 McClean (William2, John1). James3 grew up in Benton Twp. In the 1840 US census there were four SWARTHOUT households (carious spellings) listed for Benton Twp. and another eight households in nearby towns of Yates County. Research shows that Asa P. Swarthout was probably the son of John L./S. Swarthout who was living in Benton Twp. at the time of the 1840 census.iiii 1840Benton: p. 267, line 7. Furthermore, in this census this John L./S. Swarthout was listed as living next door to (next line) William2 F. McLEAN (John1). Asa probably grew up with James3 McClean (William2, John1) in Yates County and may even have moved to Wayne County together.
Further research found a Lydia McLean with a ten year old son, William McLean, living in the household of an Abel and Pamelia Lyon in 1860. These are evidently Lydia’s parents (as subsequently shown by the 1880 census listing). There is no record of her daughter, Betsy, in this census and Betsy, being about 21 in 1860, may have married by then or died.

Date of Census: 13 June 1870
In the 1880 census, the widow Lydia McLean is living with a widowed Pamelia Lyon and is listed as Pamelia’s daughter. This indicates that the wife of James F. McLean who had died and was listed with him in the 1850 census, and then mentioned as his widow and heir in his 1853 probate record was Lydia A. (Lyon) McLean. No further record of the son William C. McLean has been found.

Neither a burial record nor any other records have been found for Lydia (Lyon) McLean in New York.
In summary, This seems to be one family of a James F. and a Lydia A. (Lyon) McClean, with two children: Betsy (who may have died or married before 1860) and William C., who may have died or moved away before 1870. The birth and death dates of this James F. are close to those given in the family Bible for James3 McClean (William2, John1).

In summary, this family was apparently from New York (where their son William Edwin was born in Wayne County) and at some point they apparently moved to Indiana. Nothing else is known about them.
William2 F. McLEAN (John S.1) and three of his other children, all migrated to Indiana sometime after 27 July 1850 (when he appeared in the 1850 U. S. census in Milo Twp.), and before his death on 28 January 1855 in Fountain County. With his father and siblings in Indiana, it is possible that James3 McClean (William2, John S.1) also decided to move his family to Indiana; perhaps around the same time (1850-1855), or later. Fountain County is not that far from White County where James McLean #2 was eventually buried.
Comparing the few facts known for James3 McClean (William2, John S.1), James F. McLean (#1) and James McLean (#2) does not necessarily preclude that all three are the same man. However, there are two burials, and taken on face value the existence of two different burials would seem to preclude that James F. McLean (#1) who died in New York in 1852 is the same man as James McLean (#2) who died in 1891 and was buried in Indiana.

B. Who was the real Lydia (Lyon) McLean?

Not only do we have three James McLeans, it seems we also have two Lydia (Lyon) McLeans, who each married a James McLean:

It is feasible that these two women are the same person. Their dates of birth aren’t that far off, allowing for the errors in ages listed that were common in census enumerations.
C.
Who was the real William McLean?
Finally, we have the two sons named William to consider:
The William C. McLean11 His name appears with a middle initial (“C.”) only in the 1850 census, not in the 1860 census. who was in his father’s household in the 1850 census and with his mother and maternal grandparents in the 1860 census, and was probably born in Wayne County, New York.
The William Edwin McLean who was buried in Indiana and was born in Red Crook, Wayne County.
The names William and Edwin were common in the McClean family of Benton.
James3 McClean (William2, John1) had a father named William, as well as a brother. He also had an uncle and a cousin named George Edwin, a first cousin named Edwin, and a first cousin named William Edwin. It would not have been unusual for him to choose to name a son, William Edwin.
No record – other than their burials – has been found for James (#2) and Lydia Ann (Lyon) McLean and their son William Edwin McLean living in White County. Indiana. William married Sue Ellen Obenchain (various spellings) in Chicago in 1890, and he died there in 1927. However, the 1880 censusiiiiii 1880Monticello: p. 286-A, lines 15-22. shows “Susie Obenchinn” living in her parents household in Monticello, White County. This opens the possibility that she and William met in Indiana first before they married in Chicago. William and his wife “Lulu E.” were living in Chicago in the 1900 censusiviv 1900Chicago34: p. 11, lines 10-14. with a son, William M. who was born in Feb 1893 in Indiana. Thus, though William Edwin and Sue Ellen were married in Chicago, it seems that they had returned to Indiana for some period (at least ca Feb 1893 in time for the birth of their child) before moving back to Chicago in time for the 1900 census.
William Edwin’s father, James McLean (#2), died in 1891 and his mother, Lydia Ann (Lyon), in 1896. William Edwin’s son was born in Indiana in 1893. Thus, one can speculate that following their June 1890 Chicago marriage, William Edwin and Sue Ellen had moved to White County to be near both their parents, and then moved back to Chicago after the deaths of James and Lydia. Sue Ellen’s own parents, Madison Lewis and Morgianna (Armour) Obenchain, still lived on in Monticello, White County, with her father dying there in 1912.vv FindAGrave.com Memorial #41515503.
The next years are confusing and the record is sparse. William Edwin McLean has not been found in the 1910 census, while his wife, Sue Ellen McLean, and their son, William, appeared in 1910 as boarders in the household of an apparently unrelated John Johnson in Biloxi, Harrison County, Mississippi.vivi 1910Biloxi: p. 1-B, lines 68-72. There is no obvious reason for their presence in Mississippi, or for the absence of William Edwin. In the 1920 census, viivii 1920Chicago: p. 4-A, lines 40-43. William Edwin, Sue Ellen and their son William M. are all back living together in Chicago (with Sue Ellen’s mother living with them).

D.
Conclusions

The James F. McLean buried in Wayne County certainly seems to match
James3 McClean (William2, John S.1) in terms of his dates of birth and death.
It is logical that with his father and siblings in Indiana, James3 McClean (William2, John S.1) would have at some point chosen to move there with his family, as well, and thus could have eventually died there.
The 1850 census and 1853 probate records tell us that those two men were the same, then James3 McClean (William2, John S.1) married a woman named Lydia A. Lyon and had children by her, one of who was named William.
The presence of Asa P. Swartout in the 1850 census, increases the likelihood that the James F. McLean in that census came from Benton Twp.
The Lydia in New York comes close in birth dates to matching the Lydia buried in Indiana.
The son of James F. and Lydia A. McLean, William C., in the 1850 census could well be the same man as the William Edwin born in Wayne County and buried in Indiana. The birthdates and birth places are the same.
Who was the James McLean #2 buried in Indiana, if James3 McClean (William2, John S.1) was the James F. McLean #1 and died in 1852?

; The fate of William2 F.

McLean who had died intestate and who had a wife named Lydia A. who was named heir.
ii[:ITAL]iiii Ancestry.com NYWills: Record seen on 3 April 2021 at https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=8800&h=2841751;
Figure 270:     Census Detail for the James F. McLean Household from the 1850 U. S. Census, Wolcott Twp., Wayne County, New York ii 1850Wolcott: p. 525-A, lines 6-12.

McLean who had died intestate and who had a wife named Lydia A. who was named heir.
ii[:ITAL]iiii Ancestry.com NYWills: Record seen on 3 April 2021 at https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=8800&h=2841751;

Betsy McLean was born circa 1839 at Wayne Co., New York, USA; Aged 11 in 1850 census.1
; The fate of William2 F.

McLean who had died intestate and who had a wife named Lydia A. who was named heir.
ii[:ITAL]iiii Ancestry.com NYWills: Record seen on 3 April 2021 at https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=8800&h=2841751;

No grave marker was found for James McLean, though the burial was recorded.

"UNION CITY EDITOR KILLED ON SATURDAY - TRAIN STRUCK AUTO AT CROSSING - MACHINE WRECKED - Five Companions of the Ill-Fated Man Were Injured - UNION CITY, June 8 - An automobile carrying six people to their homes here from a Rebekah installation at Wattsburg, was hit on the Main street crossing of the Philadelphia and Erie railroad at 12:30 o'clock yesterday morning and not one of the party escaped injury. The automobile was reduced to a pile of wreckage, but fortunately did not take fire. The Dead - FRANK E McLEAN, editor of the Times-Enterprise of this place and Democratic county chairman; instantly killed. The Injured - Miss Bernice Barr, a teacher in the public schools here; both legs broken above the ankles, toes crushed, collar bone broken, back and head cut and bruised, may also have hip broken. May not recover. Charles W Hayes, owner and driver of the automobile, injured about face and limbs. Mrs Charles W Hayes, injured about the head. Miss Imogene Hayes, daughter of C W Hayes, right leg cut. Mrs E A Evans, escaped with slight bruises. A Dangerous Crossing - Returning from the fraternal event at Wattsburg, the Union City party reached Union City shortly after midnight. The grade crossing at North Main and High streets is a very dangerous one and as the auto approached from the north a steep grade had to be climbed. The opera house block prevents a clear view of the tracks at this point. On the west side of the crossing stood a heavy freight train with two engines attached to it and both engines were exhausting steam, making it difficult for the occupants of the auto to hear the approach of the heavy westbound freight train. The approaching train is known to have whistled at Crooked street, just below the scene of the disaster, but it is likely the occupants of the automobile did not hear the warning on account of the exhausting steam from the other engines. Mounting the grade leading to the tracks, the auto with its six souls aboard ran out upon the main tracks directly in the path of the oncoming heavy train. In an instant the machine had been reduced to a pile of splintered and twisted wreckage. The heavy train was stopped within thirty feet and the engineer and crew members rushed to the assistance of the injured. Mr McLean's body was found buried under the wreckage. He was dead when taken out. Miss Barr was also buried under the wreckage. She was unconscious but still alive and she was carried into the Cooper house and surgical attention given her at once. Mr Hayes was found entangled with wreckage on the front end of the cowcatcher. How he came to be picked up instead of run over by the engine he is unable to explain. The others were hurled to one side, their injuries resulting from the violent contact with the ground. Terribly Injured - Miss Barr is the daughter of the late John Barr. She is a most estimable young lady and one of the best teachers in the public schools here. Shortly after being removed to the Cooper house she regained consciousness despite her terrible injuries. Her condition was such that the attending physician decided to send her to Erie on the morning train and have her placed in a hospital there. The other injured are being cared for in their homes and will recover. Mr McLean was a leading citizen of this place, honored and esteemed by all who knew him. He was honored by the Democratic party a year ago when he was selected as county chairman. He leaves his wife, a daughter, Miss Bessie, employed at the Erie Specialty works office, in Erie, and an adopted son, Russell McLean. Two brothers also survive, John C, formerly associated with the deceased in the publishing business, now justice of the peace, and C A McLean, tax collector in Union City." (Titusville Herald, June 9, 1913, p.2)
"FUNERAL TUESDAY OF FRANK E McLEAN - Victim of Collision Placed at Rest - UNION CITY, June 10 - Funeral services over the remains of Frank E McLean, editor of the Times-Enterprise, who was killed in a grade crossing accident here early Saturday morning, were held from the late home at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon, Rev Edgar Mason Smead, DD, officiating. The funeral was largely attended, delegations coming from Erie, Corry and intermediate points. The floral tributes were especially beautiful and profuse, attesting in a way to the high esteem in which Mr McLean was held by all who knew him. All the business places in the town were closed from 2 to 4 this afternoon out of respect to his memory. Following the services at the grave which were in charge of Corry lodge of Elks, the members of the Charmber of Commerce and local fraternal societies marched to the city hall where resolutions of appreciation of the deceased and regret over his untimely end are to be aced upon."
