MRS. JULIA BURNS IS BURIED TODAY - DEATH OF PIONEER LAWTON WOMAN OCCURRED SATURDAY NIGHT
Mrs. Julia H. Burns, 89 years of age, passed away Saturday night at 10:45, death resulting from cerebram hemorrhage.
Mrs. Burns was born in Dubois, Ill., August 26, 1837. In 1860, she was married to J. B. Phillips. To this union three children were born, all now deceased. Mr. Phillips died during the Civil War. In 1864, she was married to John W. Yost, who died in 1882. Three children survive this union, H. D. Yost of Covington, T. H. Yost of Oklahoma City, and Mrs. Wreatha Ruland of this city.
She was married to M. L. Burns in St. Louis in 1883, moving with her family to Lawton August 5, 1901, Mr. Burns passing away in 1917. Since then, she has made her home with her children.
Besides her three children, she is survived by 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, also two sisters, Mrs. M. B. Curlee of Oklahoma City and Mrs. A. A. Lowe of Shelbina, Mo; and four brothers, C. A. Spencer of Wichita, Kansas; John W. Spencer of Columbus, Kansas; J. E. Spencer of Konosha, Wis., and R. H. Spencer of Dubois, Ill.
At the age of 18, she was converted and united with the Methodist church and has always been active in its membership and has lived a consistent Christian life for nearly three quarters of a century. Mrs. Burns was well known here, and notwithstanding the inclement weather, the funeral, which was held this afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wreatha Ruland 907 C Avenue, was largely attended. Rev. A. C. Brown, pastor of the First M. E. Church, conducted the services. Burial was made in Highland Cemetery beside her husband. Ritters were in charge of the funeral arrangements. The many friends of the family sympathize with them in their bereavement. (The Lawton Constitution, Monday, December 6, 1926, p. 1).
"Funeral Services for Mrs. Burns"...Several cars of out-of-town relatives and friends were in attendance: Mr. and Mrs. Yost of Covington; Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Yost and daughter, Miss Helena, of Oklahoma City; J. E. Jack of Beaucoup, Ill; R. E. Jack of Chickasha; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lowe of Norman; V. C. Wolverton of Chickasha; Mrs. T. P. Pace of Purcell. Mrs. Pace, Mrs. Nathan Yarmuk, and Miss Peka Nance of this city were granddaughters of Mrs. Burns. The pallbearers were A. G. Norris, A. L. Lund, H. C. Sauerman, John Ledgerwood, John Seaman, and Frank Rice...(The Lawton Constitution, Tuesday, December 7, 1926, p. 5).
